Thankyou for doing these video's they really encourage me. I'm 4 weeks into recovery but have such tight tendons and swollen knee. I'm doing all exercises and hard work isn't a problem but each morning feel back to square one a tight band around knee cap and have to start easing the knee up to get going. Cant seem to get the flick at back of heel when walking that motion is really difficult for me. I'm at around 100 degrees flexion and my pt said that is probably where I'll end up.

I so needed to hear this. I am approaching FOUR YEARS since I had both knees replaced. At 12 weeks, I was barely past 90 on both. The best I have got to now is 117/115 and that was last year. I have been doing Aqua Aerobics three to four times a week, physical culture one to two times a week, physio one to two times a week. I am consciously bending and stretching each and every day, but I am now being told by my physiotherapist and my surgeon that I'll never get any better. Am I wrong to think that I can still get more out of these new knee joints? I would love to reach a 125 or more, but was thinking this was a pipe dream. So what do you think?

No one can tell you that!!! It’s going to be hard work, your putting in work. Some people have no problem at all!! I think it’s something about implants. Now they have these stretch labs, and I am hearing great results!!! Speak life into your knees and I know this sounds crazy, I am going to set out for 2nd opinion if I am not satisfied!!! Friend had surgery and said 4 years later riding recumbent bike, and joining stretch lab is changing his life!!! Read about Oprah’s new knees!! What she did!! God Bless

I had only 35-40 degrees ROM at the 4 month point due to complications. The physician had given up & I was basically told I could continue physical therapy if I so desired. I started regular acupuncture, chiropractic, Pilates & massage therapies. It took a while but by 12-15 months I was finally at 85-90 degrees. Still working on my flexibility & I am 2 1/2 years post-op. Don't give up!

Hei Tony: I just past 3 mo. post. The lightbulb went on. It is not the knee joint that hurts when I push the range of motion, its everything else! So I identified each area, eg when I put my shoes on, or the first 10 steps of the day, I asked "Which muscle groups hurt?" I went to a professional deep massage therapist. The first time I could hardly drive home, she hit every ache and pain! Next visit was 10 days later. and suddenly the aches and pains faded. By 3rd time it was my non-op leg and knee that bothered me more. Moral is... It's not the joint that hurts, its everything else. Treat the sore tight muscles/tendons ie. the pain, then flexion becomes easier.

I have worked with patients who had both a hip replacement and knee replacement. They also underwent an MUA for the knee and the hip was fine. In fact, I think the MUA improved the knee ROM which helped improve motion at the hip too.

Thanks again Tony. Week 2 I only had 75 degrees. Week 3 only 90. Then I found your videos ! At this point the penny dropped and I realised I had to exercise my whole body so I began incorporating bits of my old exercise routine into the ones from my PT. Rather than exercising just one knee I put both through the same routine. My whole body is stronger and helps the operated knee recover. I'm sure that helped. . I hit 120 degrees in week 5, now at week 8 I have reached 130 but letting improvements come slowly. Every video I see of yours has also been incorporated. You're a lifesaver my friend and I can't thank you enough.

The physio staff at the rehabilitation hospital I stayed for the first 4 weeks kept telling us whatever RoM we have at 3 to 6 weeks is all the motion we will ever have. This scared me because when I have one of the 2 replacements very swollen until week 7 and finding it extremely difficult to bend I was thinking I'd have one knee at 90 degrees and the other at 120 degrees and the 120 degrees I can adjust to but thinking the 90 degrees is all I'll ever have well that kind of untrue information isn't good for the recovery. Thanks to your very helpful and informative clips I now know the truth.

I really noticed I’m doing better . I do take a break one day and restart the next day. I ride the bike at the gym and can now put the bike in the closet position. And I walk on the treadmill about roughly 20 minutes at least 2-3 times a week. I’m now at 120 to 125 flexion. Even though I’ve had pain it’s also subsiding. Thanks for this video. THANK YOU! I really needed to hear this right now. I am just past 12 wks TKR with ligament reconstruction (MCL and PCL) and I am feeling so defeated. My ROM for flexion is 105-110 and extension is 5-1 (on average). I had read elsewhere that you can increase ROM with sustained stretching. My numbers were just enough that the surgeon did not perform MUA. Now I feel "stuck" in this range. You mention not overdoing it and giving ample recovery time. Could you suggest a generic schedule/routine? Thanks again!

Honestly it is great to gain ROM during a session, but my hunch is the gain is lost a couple hours later when the knee is swollen and stiff. I am not saying it is good or bad, only you can say that. I know that at 8 weeks they probably want you to be closer to 110 or more, but that is what they want for you. What is important is what you want. A lot of my patients are happy to go slower, take longer, but enjoy the process a bit more. There is no right or wrong answer. Do what feels right for you. Thanks for subscribing.

You are in great company. I see a lot of clients in my clinic who just do everything right and nothing seems to work. Part of the problem is we see people who just seem to leap off the surgery table with full range of motion. I can only say that if I measure my personal running speed with a stop watch I am pretty slow. But if I use a grand father clock I am pretty fast. If I want to feel really good I will use a calendar. Point is, as I mentioned in this video. Even when people do everything right, your body will get to your goals on it's timeframe not yours. Thanks for posting your comment. Keep me posted. Keep working on it. Even if you gain half a degree each day it isn't enough to notice day to day but it all adds up.

Using same PT and he checked the Right knee to see how it was doing and it is way better than before. Keep working and it will get there. Also ask doctor about the Right knee when would swelling go away and it do better. He smiled and said we did the surgery in May so sometime around May of next year. More or less saying it takes about a full year to fully recover from TKR. Good luck and keep working. And I am at 115 on the left knee right now.

I am going to PT for 2.5 hrs - 3/week and in the pool "biking" in the deep end for 30 min 2/week. Am I doing too much? I went back on my Celebrex because I had def inflammation in the week that I lost flexion but still struggling and trying not to get too heady about all of it but this is my second time with a. Hi Eliza, great question. It is common to experience exactly what you describe. I can't say if you are doing too much or not, but I usually ask my patients who are back to work to see how they feel on their off days. I also ask how much or how many exercises they are doing. The only way to know if it is too much is to take a day or two of rest and see if it feels better.

Hi Tony. Almost 14 weeks after a revision surgery due to a stiff knee. I was very healthy and other than the knee pain I had a complete movement. No overweight, 5 ‘ tall. The perfect patient. Became stiff at rehab center and mostly CPD machine therapy. I did’nt know any better…!! My fault. After revision surgery I started therapy with a great PT at home. I am still experiencing a strong stifness on my knee and without help I can reach a maxiumum of 80-85 degrees bend. My therapist decided that improper therapy in my rehab centers (after both surgeries) did me wrong. After initial strength therapy we started a “leg pushing” aggresive stage. I’m desperate to gain as much ROM as I can but the pain is pretty brutal. I keep taking it and my PT can take me to 90-95 degrees bend with a nasty pain. My stifness won’t go away. Medications, icing…. nothing! After PT, the inflamation response takes stifness to a super level. Heel slides are barely impossible. I’m very depressed and anxious. I have talked to my therapist. She is very understanding, loving and knowledgeable. We have tried all kinds of treatment without getting over the uncomfortable line and it has not worked. Don’t know if I have to be patient and wait but I’ve been out of my job for 7 months. I walk ans try to keep myself active as much as my condition allows me. I don’t have the ROM for cycling or driving. I still drive because I need to do my regular things. It’s great to hear this, but normal life and need to return to work are another thing. Am I just hurting my knee more taking this kind of pain? In your opinion and experience, should we keep doing the “uncomfortable” therapy rather than the painful (screams and tears)? Please let me read from you! Please! My name is Nancy Santiago. Writing from Puerto Rico
