I've got a pair of M-Audio monitors myself- best $330 I ever spent on audio. The model (CX8) definitely has a slightly warm sound (which I love), but you can truncate the bass and get a super dry Yamaha-style sound with toggle switches on the back. Still can't believe how cheap they were letting those things go. $330 is the price I paid for the PAIR. And they're huge, full-range, bi-amped 8" monitors!

This is one of the Videos, that brings me back to be thankful to the Gifts a get for living here in Austria, in the Time of the early 21. Century! I am a too early retired Engeneer, but my monthly pension is good enough to have a quite easy living. I can afford a pretty good sounding high End music system in my flat, and the availability of music via Amazon unlimited is also very good. And for the music i love the most, i buy myselfe the record - if it`s available in a proper quality. It is similiar to our tap water here in Austria. This is available almost everywhere ( but not on the summits of the higher Alps, lol.) And our tap water is also Spring Water, and cristal clear nearly everywhere it runs out of the water pipe. Being gifted that way, it`s a shame, that i do not honor enough the luxury way i am allowed to live here and now! The same is with the music! I think, my music system should be good enough to the music i listen, to honor the people who made it, and especially to honor the easy access to my music! So, a video like this here reminds me, to think about my gifted existence-compared to a lot of many other humans in this world, and the next glas of water i drink, will be honored and dedicated to the great Luck i have, to live here and now in Austria.... Cheers, nastravje and Prost!

i would say that midrange snap is about surface area and power. since he is bass player i would think its comes down to the subwoofer, have a big and good subwoofer in sealed box( ports dont work in highs anyways) and set the crossover to 150hz or more. the best bass snap feeling i ever had was when i build a sealed subwoofer with a 21" woofer powered by a 1800w amp. i could set ti to 200hz and it was so fast, punchy and snappy like i never heard before.

M-Audio makes a full range of monitors, but all of them are decidedly "budget." IF you ARE ballin' on change, Dayton makes a set of powered speakers that are generally considered pretty amazing, given their cost. Yamaha's HS series are considered "reference" as well, and can be found at good prices online. If you've got a bit more cheddar to play with, a discrete amp and monitor setup is ideal. Keep an eye on Audiogon and eBay and you can pick up some screaming deals on used amps and speakers if you're comfortable doing some research.

"buy new speakers". I had the same thought. If you cannot hear everything on them, there bad speakers. But you dont have to have audiophile speakers. The goal for studio monitoring is to hear everything as flat as possible as a reference. The end goal is to mix a song that can be heard on audiophile system but also on a crappy car system. Thats why you often see multiple monitors in studios, as a reference. For example the HS series from Yamaha are used for mixing. They are hard to mix on, but if you get is right, your mix will sound great on almost everything. But would not want them in my living room. They sound crap!

Dear Bassist, Your monitors are fine, especially for mids. Here are some avenues to look down when troubleshooting your bass snap issue: Your room is your biggest issue when it comes to recording and monitoring. Make sure you're not too close to the walls and that your monitoring setup is arranged in an equilateral triangle between your mix position and L and R. Make sure your ear level is somewhere from tweeter level to midway between tweeter and woofer. Absorption and diffraction help reduce transient slurring as well as break up room modes. Make sure your system is calibrated correctly using A/85 standard. You'll need an SPL meter. www.atsc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Techniques-for-establishing-and-maintaining-audio-loudness.pdf Listen to yours and other's recordings on different systems in different rooms. Your setup might be fine. It just might be an issue with the recording or you might be noticing heavy compression. Aside from those things, yes, it might be your monitors. In the case of poor off-axis response, proper monitor placement should fix the snap issue. Depending on where the monitor drivers are crossed and what type of crossover is used, the crossover can be the culprit. There's even a case for baffle topology for response issues considering the crossover frequency and the distance between the drivers. You may even have a defective speaker or set. Another alternative reason is your ears might just be beat up, or you're experiencing ear fatigue. If you're looking to buy a new set of monitors to really get transient clarity, I'd suggest a sealed system as opposed to ported.

M-audio, in general, is not bad 'for the money' but the 'for the money' part is a big part here. I used m-audio audio interfaces to digitize tapes and vinyl back in the day and honestly, priced around 100 bucks, they do a great job. But if you are a critical listener well... Let's just say I use a dedicated tascam recorder now. I'd be tempted to look at Genelec and Adam/Eve monitors. Adam is expensive, Genelec though is not bad at all and the older series (and those are the ones you want, the square ones!) are tight, precise, energetic and detailed. Or you just make your setup so you can put your speakers a bit further away from your computer and use a proper pair of hi-fi speakers :).

Paul- The cheesy looking 10-watt speakers you looked up are nothing like the ones this guy is using. I know the 10-watt model you're referring to, and they don't accept balanced inputs. But the reader said he was using XLR cables, remember? The worst M-Audio speakers that accept XLR are BX5s, and I can assure you that they have no problem with bass harmonics. The problem is that this guy is drowning them out with his subwoofer. Rookie mistake. As another commenter mentioned, the reader can fix this issue with an SPL meter. Use a sine-wave generator to pinpoint the sub's loudest peak (probably a room mode), then turn down the sub until that peak is equal to the volume of pink noise coming out of the BX5s. Problem solved.

What are you using to record your bass on ? You need a top quality mike .. one that is at ease with the bass register and one that also picks up the harmonics !!! This is important... string bass's have plenty of harmonics. Equally important is the speaker you need a big one not little bookshelf/desktop jobs .. they're hopeless. Don't use a subwoofer .. they ate only good for rumbling noises .. if you can get hold of one buy a 12" Dynaudio or Scan speak driver.. they are not cheap but will really give your bass lines the clarity and definition you want . Bill and Teddy were two of the bass players I used to knock around with back in the day. Trying to recreate that bass snap with a speaker that was frequently used to create that sound makes no sense whatsoever. We used Etone drivers for that kind of work because they were not just good value for money compared to ElectroVoice for example, but they were also very rugged. They would manage signal that would shred hi-fi speakers.

Jonathan Sturm .... I agree those Etone drivers were extremely rugged indeed. The cones are made in Brazil of all places and the voice coils wound and fitted here in Sydney . But I keep stressing this point ...with ruggedness comes one drawback with Etone speakers and that is detail to sound.. fidelity if you like... the acoustic bass is rich in harmonics and to really bring them alive you will really need a more accurate driver .. it doesn't have to be all THAT rugged and powerful as you are only using it for listening by yourself ... ok 👍

@@jonathansturm4163 I understand that. However, there are harmonic strata from the strings being picked/plucked that can reach above 2khz, depending on the type/style of bass being played. Especially when the fret-board is slapped. Does this mean 450hz? 800hz? 1050hz? 1300hz? 1600hz? 1800hz? We need at least a general range of frequencies on which to focus before we can even begin to address a shortcoming in this area.
@kencohagen4967
6 жыл бұрын
Increase efficiency of the midrange driver. The driver must have the physical tendency to reproduce sound in the middle range of human hearing. If it doesn't, you can use an EQ to bring out those frequencies. The real question is what frequencies are you playing through your Bass Guitar, and what frequencies are important to the music you are playing. Paul is absolutely right, forget those self amplified plastic housed bullshit monitors that have hit the market recently. They are lightweight and easy to set up at a gig, they are not anything to listen to when being critical of what playing at a gig. Get yourself a decent system for home, that you can play your bass guitar through even f it's through an and cab sim for bass and run it through the decent system, because that is the quality of sound your audience expects. We are what we hear! When we hear shit.... we play like? The difficult thing here is there are two worlds out there. The audiophile world which is meant to listen to music which has been recorded under the very best conditions, and the music world in which the speakers color the sound being played through them as part of the TONE you set out to produce. Get this, the difference between producing sound and reproducing sound. If you really want to hear what you sound like on stage, record a performance, then play it back through a quality system to hear what it sounded like to the audience. I hope that made some sense. My reasoning is this. When playing with your band everybody is trying to be heard over the drummer, who is being played over by the rhythm guitarist, who is being played over by the lead guitarist who all are being accompanied by the bass guitarist, who has the job of keeping the melody together, while the drummer keeps time and the rhythm guitarist combines his work with the bassist to provide harmonic content for the melody. Dude, your work is important, but unrecognized. And that sucks. Because the bass line of any song can make it a hit or create a pile of scrap Cd's at the landfill. Good luck!

But to make it worse, you kinda really missed the mark on your assessment of MAudio. They are the hardware wing, if you will, of AVID and ProTools, you know, the two software packages used most by highend music, film and video creators. Carping on their entry level self powered speakers designed for luging along on the road so a musician can at least do a little work in their hotel room... unnecessary roughness. Bottom line, no matter the kit, you can't blame it until you see the room (acoustics) it's playing in. This cat might be sitting the perfect distance from his back wall to make bad room modes for exactly the frequencies he's wanting to hear. Maybe his subwoofer is in the wrong phase and makes the deep notes legible but cancels the overlapping frequencies right through the bass lines he's straining to hear.

If you want monitors, take a look at KRK Rokit 6. (They have smaller models too). I run those and they deliver the goods and I am not using a studio soundcard and such. I do mix with them though. The KRKs are fairly flat, but respond well to low frequencies and yes, they have that important midrange you seek. The Rokit 6 run around $300/pair and you are likely to find them for a bit south of that. If you are listening for learning or practice purposes there is no need to invest in amps and system building, that is more costly. If however you are doing critical pleasure listening, then you really should consider building a system separate from the computer. Oh and if so, budget first (majority towards speakers please) and take all the time you need to build it and it doesn't have to be five figures or even the high four figures. Do your homework, listen to the right folks and you would be knocked out if you heard what even a $1000 system can do if set up right.

Get rid of the woofer and buy Kef LS 50. Or cheaper LSX (maybe) with a woofer... and you don't need amp, pre, stimer, DAC etc. And you will increase everything.

@Larry Niles Paul said if you're going to do something, do it right. I think that applies here to his videos.

How do you improve bass?, change your amp and speakers. How do you improve mid-range?, change your amp and speakers. How do you increase clarity? Change your amp and speakers. Get my point......?

Yeah, I was really hoping he'd discuss the nuts and bolts of speaker design re: how to produce more clear mids. Of well, you get what you pay for.

Meat eating can be very healthy and nutritious, if used as part of a strictly controlled diet, such as Atkins/Keto. Respect your vegan ideals, but you over simplified your negative assessment of meat.

I have been pre-diabetic for many years. These days when I'm in hospital the food provided is mostly carbohydrates (potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, sugar) and during my two recent stays I became full-on diabetic. The last stay I had my first two insulin injections. When I replace most of those carbs with fish, eggs, nuts and cheese, I'm no longer diabetic. I don't think most people have to be strict about the carbs, just keep them lower than fat and protein.

@M Pi go and find out more about specific diets like Atkins and Keto.
If we are what we eat, you are a vegetable. The occasional Big Mac does no one ANY harm, and no doubt ABSOLUTELY tastes better than the vegetarian bilge you serve up!

I generally like your videos Paul (allowing for the fact you would always like to sell us something). But this time I nearly abandoned the video part way in. What sounds like radio mic interference is just unacceptable. As for speakers, self powered models are not inherently bad. They can be extremely good - I am talking here as the owner of a pair of Genelecs.

I love to dispel idiocy whenever possible. I EAT MEAT, and at 65 I've had many, many tests known to the medical sciences. I'm in great shape, low/proper blood pressure, etc. So I would shove a vegetarian 'delight' EXACTLY where it belongs!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like if he only wants to hear his bass guitar single instrument only he only needs a single source mono play back. Of course you would want to add a sub but only one. You may want to check out Terry over at Dlab KZitem channel specializes in guitar amp and restoration.
