Brilliant episode Jonny. Just a tip with those old fuel injection systems. They need purging when they've been sitting. The fuel would've evaporated and it would have been full of air. So, it takes a while for the car to suck through the fuel and purge all the air pockets. Some times it takes quite a while. You're probably lucky all the o rings in that old Bosch system are still ok. Old diesels have a hand pump so you can prime them manually. The can of hope effectively helped you do the same thing but the injector distributor pump needs to be spinning for it to be really effective. Hence, you need the engine spinning over. Putting a bit of fuel into the engine and getting it to run and suck for a bit did the job . Well done. That can of hope is a real problem solver.

This car is super-cool - I've always loved wide-body 560 SECs - but the AMG Hammer was built on the W124 chassis, so even if that engine is from a Hammer, does that confer the name onto the whole car? Hammer-equipped might be more accurate. Regardless, I always appreciate these videos because we need to preserve as much information about these old cars as possible.
@JR-ii4lq
Жыл бұрын
Correct, though when AMG and Hammer are mentioned together I think of what defines the w124 Hammer and that's the engine. And though the actual "Hammer" was released later than this car (gen 1 w126c) they share the same heart more or less. The 500e has this heritage, and would be the one I'd prefer given the choice, the m119 was one of Mercedes greatest engines. Japan has the best collection of bonkers AMG's from this era E.g. 6 litre Frankenstein m117/119s.

Incredible story and find - as these widebody versions are stunning looking cars by today's standards with such a rich & deep history from the pre-merger AMG days when they were a seperate tuner to MB. The early production 32v engines in the Gen1's had issues with cams snapping near the sprocket. This was later rectified with thicker diameter shafts produced. The earlier versions also had issues with the heads which were sand cast and not of high quality alloy and prone to oil leaks and the oil drain back to sump was not great which was also rectified in later versions. The biggest headache is you cannot gets parts for these 32v engine heads anymore unless someone can custom make them which is difficult. The bottom end/blocks is no issue at all For a car enthusiast I can't believe he just let it sit for so long (+10yrs) without regularly starting it and dribing it and swapping out old fuel for fresh and adding inhibitor to the fuel and getting a radiator flush at least (& brake fluid) and placing a dust cover over the coupe and some rodent bait traps & fixing the broken window to keep the moisture out of the barn ? Such is life is suppose

I can't understand why these classic cars aren't looked after more by there owners!🤔 Can it really be too much trouble when putting into long time storage to wash and wax this car, then cover it in nice clean old bed sheets and a full length plastic sheet, I would personally jack it up and put wooden blocks under each corner to keep the wheels and tyres off the ground, and finally run the engine at least once a month. I'm really hoping that one day there will be a barn find video were the owner has done this sort treatment to their classic and it's like a new pin under the sheets. But still a another great barn find from Jonny. 👍

The larger version of this engine were bored AND stroked, not just bored out. There weren't any AMG converted M117 DOHCs in 5.2, but there were 5.4, 5.6 and 6.0 DOHCs. However I've never seen a 5.4 in anything other than a W124, I'm not sure a 5.4 was ever sold in a 126. It's abit of shame to have a such a rare pre Merger AMG sitting rotting and an owner knows relatively little about the car. Also the torque of the engine did not/ could not cause flexure or cracking of the wide arches, that was purely down to manufacturing.

Best car I ever had was a bog standard 560 SEC that I bought while working in the UAE. It was low mileage, and in such good nick that the boss of the local Merc dealer kept pestering me to buy it. I needed to order a spare part for it once. Called my local mechanic and he said "does it have the sports pack on it", or something similar. "I have no idea - how do I find out?" "Go online, go through sites that translate VIN numbers, and find one that tells you the spec when it was sold." The first site I found had trouble with the VIN, so did the next, and the next. In fact they all did. According to most of the sites I visited my 1990 Mercedes 560 SEC was actually a 1972 VW Kombi van.

You did see early UK AMG cars, very rarely, in certain parts of Central and West London when they were new. I was a courier with a vague interest on cars. Off Bayswater Road, around Holland Park and in the warren of streets east of Park Lane, you'd see the odd body-kitted big Merc. Most were horrendous. Some were truly grotesque. One or two were proper AMG cars. At the time, I thought them a vulgar sign of oil money... I am prepared now to revisit that assessment in some cases. Most remain grotesque, but some (including this one) are really rather lovely.
