Great to see you back to the Dan. Not many have reacted to this one before! Love it. Can’t go wrong with Steely Dan, so just keep them coming 😎👊 Edit: Steely Dan was actually how I found your channel when you did «Don’t take me alive» come to think of it

Steely Dan really created their own sub-genre, or at least, their own, unique, very identifiable sound. They're clearly a jazz-influenced rock band, and there are many other jazz-influenced rock bands, but "Steely Dan music" (and lyrics!) is an experience that, for me, has no comparison. Great music, and sometimes cryptic, but always intelligent, and often, darkly humorous, lyrics-- that's Steely Dan, and I love them!

Steely Dan consistently put out interesting and complex music. Just seems to flow out of them, always different yet always familiar. You can't go wrong with them. Funny that he didn't think his voice was good enough and was reluctant to sing early in their careers. Eclectic set tonight👍 Thank you again!

😎👍"Your Gold Teeth 2" is a waltz, and thus, a very different gestalt. I've always preferred it to this one. I just did a search of your channel, and notice that you still haven't listened to my personal favorite Steely Dan tune, "Any World That I'm Welcome To." All I can say is that you're in for a real treat when you eventually do.

Steely Dan had huge hits that totally hooked people who didn't realize how dark a lot of the material actually is. "Black Friday" is inspired by a financial crash in the 1800's. "Kid Charlemagne" is an ode to Stanley Owsley who was a "clandestine chemist" who made the best LSD, which many bands had access to back in the day. "Hey Nineteen" is about a much older man dating a nineteen year old. "Glamour Profession" is heavily drug oriented and a poke at those who can afford to be stupid. "Time Out Of Mind" has very specific references to shooting heroin. "Tonight when I chase the dragon, the water will turn to cherry wine, the silver will turn to gold, time out of mind." "The Dragon" is an old nickname for heroin and the water turning to wine is a junkie tapping a vein, which they know they have when they draw back slightly on the plunger and a little blood blossoms into the heroin in the syringe. And "Charley Freak" speaks for itself. And for fun, you could look up where they got their name. Blessings.

With Steely Dan, there is no room for improvement. It is spot on in all aspects , even with current technology, anything would only degrade it. Donald Fagan’s Nightfly was one of the first CDs I bought worth a look.

The interesting thing about this album is that Fagen didn’t like it. He hated the fact that they had to do it in the midst of touring-and he hated touring in those days. He felt it was rushed. But the fact is that the album turned out great, with a fresh spontaneity missing in their more carefully constructed work. A lot of SD fans (me included) put this one in the top 3 SD albums with "The Royal Scam" and "Aja."

Daniel, you are so correct. I am a Steely Dan fan and have been waiting for you to hit this song. A couple years ago, I was at the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame, and they were highlighting 1950's black artists. A song came on and I heard the lyrics "Going to Chicago - there ain't nothing for a monkey woman to do". The song was performed by Joe Williams backed by Count Basie. I was thrilled to know Steely Dan - Your Gold teeth and the line from the old bandmaster. Keep up the good work, Ken

Good song, huh?! You *should* have paused it, to avoid being blocked; enjoyed that you were too distracted and that you obviously love them too. Steely Dan is probably the most unique band I have ever heard due to the complexity of their chords, harmony, lyrics and rhythm. They always tackled what was considered back in the 70's and 80's somewhat racy subjects of sexuality and drug dealing amongst others. Just found your channel-- not sure if you've had a chance to listen to their album The Gaucho, but you should do so....love their jams.

Steely Dan - they are (like Pink Floyd) actually their own genre. Whatever style they see fit to throw at us - rock, jazz, funk, fusion, prog - the results are, without fail, impeccable. I especially like the extended runs in this one - seldom played, but immensely enjoyable. Please don't take so long to get back to them again.
