This videoclip features a performance of khyal, a North Indian classical vocal genre, by Manjiri Asanare Kelkar.
Manjiri is a renowned exponent of the stylistic lineage of Jaipur Atrauli gharana. Her musical training started under the guidance of her father, the distinguished tabla player Anand Asanare, and continued with the illustrious Jaipur gharana singer Madhusudan Kanetkar and - more recently - with legendary Kishori Amonkar. It is thanks to such extensive and rigorous artistic training that Manjiri has developed a rare musical sensitivity, well-matched by her outstanding technical precision and her deep knowledge of the repertoire. These qualities, together with her melodious voice and the creative richness of her performances, make Manjiri of the most talented khyal singers of her generation.
In this performance, Manjiri is accompanied by Nitin Ware on tabla and Dnyaneshwar Sonawane on the harmonium.
This video features Manjiri Asanare Kelkar performing a short vocal composition (bandish) in rag Bhimpalasi, a North Indian afternoon rag. Bhimpalasi is characterised by different ascending and descending scale profiles: it is pentatonic (avoiding the second and sixth degrees) in ascent and heptatonic in descent. The third, fourth and seventh degrees are lowered.
The bandish is set in tintal, a 16-beat meter: here the tempo is fast (with the composition starting at approximately 170bpm).
The presentation of the first part of the composition (sthayi) is followed by a brief improvisation, before the singer moves to the second part (antara) which emphasises the upper range of the melody and the upper tonic (from 01’50’’). After returning, as customary, to the sthayi, Manjiri Asanare Kelkar focuses on improvising (from approx. 02’28’’). A tempo acceleration (to approximately 220bpm) precedes the last part of the performance.
This performance includes brief but skilful instrumental passages by the tabla and harmonium players.
The concert was preceded by a conversation between Manjiri Asanare Kelkar and Laura Leante, professor of ethnomusicology at Durham Univeristy, which touched upon aesthetic, philosophical and musicological issues related to Indian Classical Music, and khyal. The video of the meeting is posted on the Giorgio Cini Foundation's KZitem channel:
