Objectives and mechanisms behind the PAT scheme in India: A closer look at its approach to improving industrial energy efficiency
The Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme is part of India's energy efficiency mission and rewards industries for saving energy. It sets a benchmark for energy consumption for each identified industry which are called Designated Consumers.
The factories and workshops that consume more energy than the benchmark are encouraged to invest in energy-efficient machines and processes to minimise their power consumption.
For every 1 MWh of energy saved the companies receive a certificate they can sell on the Indian Energy Exchange, or the other authorised trading platform, Power Exchange India Ltd. The certificates can be bought by the other DCs that fall short of their energy efficiency targets.
