When you think Indian watches, you think HMT and rightly so, but over and above this historic brand India has both an ancient history linked to horology and astronomy as well as a series of different periods of entry of watch and clocks brands from Europe and elsewhere. This includes early entrants like anglo-swiss time company and the Swiss and French brands catering to the Mahrajas like Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, JLC and others. There are also favourites like Favre Leuba who were going very strong before the coming domination of the government sponsored Hindustan Machine Tool Limited / HMT who would go on to sell 80 million watches over 3 decades.
However, there is of course the rise to Titan Watch and Timex India as well as also rans like Allwyn backed by Seiko and bit part players like Into Swiss Time - IST. More recently there have been some fun new brands lie Bangalore watch co, Japiure watch co and others - perhaps a resurgence. I hope you enjoy the video!
