Well, I was pleasantly surprised to see some KZitemr outside of India reviewing INDIAN after 27 years. Looking at the content, honestly, I would choose to take it easy for their ignorance and lack of clarity on the context/relevance of the movie in ‘96. Any teen+ Tamil/ South Indian movie fan who watched the movie in cinemas would agree with these : ✅ While Jimmy and team see this as over dramatic and taking one’s subject too serious, the deep rooted corruption in India then and now is unparalleled by any standards. One wouldn’t know it unless they go through it day in and day out. For someone to speak out against the government and the system out in the open was a rebellious thing. People obviously celebrated it. ✅ India celebrated their 50th Independence Day in 1997. This movie was timed to reach the people just before that for one reason- that is , people are still fighting corrupt system even though the British has gone. What is freedom if you are still being controlled by corrupt officials? ✅ 90s was the time without OTT/ Internet/ Social Media and movies were one of the most important sources of entertainment next to Cricket in India. A movie’s success was measured by its ‘repeat’ audience and to do that you needed a thorough mix of Masala (ofcourse) that had comedy, songs, romance and what not. INDIAN did a 50cr + box office collections then which still is a magical number for many established artists in the industry today. ✅ Most importantly the kind of awareness and impulsive social change this movie brought in real life is something that Jimmy and team would never understand. People started talking about / against corruption at government offices, public gatherings, TV reality shows etc. INDIAN movie gave birth to an all new genre of movies that fight for social justice that include Ramana, Anniyan, Samurai etc. ✅ Senthil and Goundamani were meant to si their role as comedians only and if you expect anything more , the joke is on you. ✅ In India, people have only heard of fathers who safeguard their children irrespective of the crimes the young ones commit. But to attempt a narration where the father takes out his corrupt son and kills him, who is one of the top heroes in the industry, was something no one imagined. This again would be understood only by people who grew up watching emotional dramas back then. ✅ Lastly the fact that you couldn’t identify Sukanya is a success for Shankar , Michael Westmore and team. In the age of boring make-up attempts then this movie was the first to do prosthetic make over which just changed the game for the Indian movie industry. Like I said , Jimmy and team obviously may not understand these nuances as they are not the relevant target group for this movie and they are late by almost 3 decades. 🙂

Shankar’s vigilante series of movies from the 90’s and 2000’s is a hodgepodge of romance, comedy and a peek into social causes like corruption, apathy etc but mainly are commercial popcorn flicks meant to cater to wide range of audiences. It is something the whole family would enjoy. I was 13 years old when this movie came out and remember watching this movie in theatre. Personally, I feel that the love triangle and focus on Chandru’s character with the goofy sidekicks did not add much to the movie and was a bit tiring. Urmila Matondkar hitting big in Bollywood at that time and I guess they wanted to shoehorn her irritating character in this movie which was just cringy to say the least. This could have just focused on Senapathy’s story and how he fights corruption without adding the extra fluff. But if this was the case, the movie would have bombed at the BO. Remember this was the 90’s and the audience wasn’t used to these kind of stories. The best part of the movie was how advanced martial arts (kalaripayattu) were incorporated to add belief on how an old man manages to go on a rampage against the bad guys. I disagree- Senapathy’s character was perfect. I guess it’s hard for someone from the developed countries to understand the social problems in India which unfortunately are still prevalent 😢

Jimmy honestly i felt you could have reviewed it better. 1) Telephone Manipol was composed using a Carnatic Raga by name Anandabhairavi and it is one of the Greatest Songs composed by AR Rahman as he integrated Classical Raga Anandabhairavi in to Western Music. Anniyan Songs were Good but Indian Songs were some of the path breaking Songs at the the time of their release in 1996 and i can spend an hour about why they were exceptional being a Fan of both Indian and Western Music. 2) Kamal Haasan as Senapathy won National Award and people fell mad for his character. 3) Senapathy character is perfect reflection of a middle class indian at that point of time. Shankar showed him as a honest and truthful man if exposed suddenly to the present corrupt Indian Society how he can transform into a Criminal. 4) First Half of the Movie focused on Chandru how he became successful in City and we can see that he is a man who wants caring and sensitive girl like Manisha Koirala but listens to Urmila Matondkar as he got his govt. job because of Urmila's Father. Chandru is a Good and Ambitious Man in the first half of the Movie. In Second half he is shown getting into corruption and how he cannot comeback from it. Many Indians are like Chandru who are initially good but becomes corrupt eventually and cannot come out of the trap. Chandru Character is the perfect example of a Good and Ambitious Indian Who will eventually turns into a Corrupted bureaucrat. 5) Manisha Koirala is a girl who follows her heart all the time helping Animals. But she also falls into the trap of corruption as her attachment for Chandru forces her to help him go out of Country. Senapathy asks Manisha is it right to defend his Son who is responsible for death of many children ? from running away so she says My Heart understands what you say but my mind won't understand - It is a very profound statement even good people support bad as they follow their mind and not their heart. 6) To get a Government Job in India we need to have a strong reference, So an Ambitious Chandru went and did all work for Urmila and her Father to crack the Job but he never loved her. So he has to loose some of his self respect to get Government Job. I have seen many in India do service like Chandru to get a good job in Government and many times these Rich Girls use these Middle Class Boys like Workers. Chandru like Manisha Koirala over Urmila matondkar as he is from village background and like to have a good and sensitive girl as his wife. 7) Senapathy is a man of self respect and very truthful and kills his son as he don't want to show double standard of morality. 8) Comedy by Goundamani and Senthil was a sensation in 1980s and 90s. So Shankar included them to relax the audience once in a while. 9) First half focus on how Chandru went on to survive as a Successful person in City and his fathers mysterious Murders. Second half is about flashback of Senapathy and what he will do if his son turns corrupt too. First half of the movie we see Chandru very diplomatic and corrupted but he turns dangerously corrupt by second half of the movie. All 5 Songs are having very deep meaning. Akadanu Naanga - This Song shows the Mindset of a Rich Girl (urmila matondkar) in India obsessed with Fashion and Technology and also a bit self obsessed girl. Telephone Manipol - Chandru desire to see Manisha Koirala Happy with Animals so Rahman used Raga Anandabhairavi in this Song which is very apt. Raga Anandabhairavi is used for relaxation and happiness. This Song is the reflection of Chandru's mind how he want to see manisha koirala always happy playing with animals. Pachai Kiligal and Kappaleri Poyaachu - Both Songs are in Raga Kaapi as AR Rahman want the audience to feel the empathy for Senapathy Family and his patriotic flashback. Kaapi Raga used in Songs to evoke Empathy and pathos. Maya Machindra : This Song reflects the mind of Manisha Koirala who is confused about the character of Chandru as she finally realizes that She is the queen in the life of Chandru as Urmila Matondkar admits that she has no plans to marry Chandru. She looks at him like her King. Chandru transforming into different animals signifies that he changes his character based on different challenges he face in his life and manisha koirala was unaware of his challenges express her frustration why he is doing that way by singing maya machindra. The Song is a mix of her love, happiness, Insecurity and her inability to understand completely Chandru. Indian 1996 is a Great Movie but you have to see it from the perspective of a Middle Class Rural Indian. It is one of the Biggest Blockbuster of 90s and Indian Audience Loved the Movie for a Reason as they could see their lives in Chandru and Senapathy as Chandru is how they are ending up in their lives and Senapathy is how they really want to be Subconciously.

Regarding the commercial aspects point you made, no, it's not just Shankar, it was the commercial cinema landscape at that time in South Indian films. While Bollywood's commercial films were mostly Rom-coms and family dramas, South Indian commercial films were a mixture of action, comedy, romance and songs etc. It was pretty common to have a romance side story completely separate side story with a comedic actor like you saw in this film which had nothing to do with the main narrative at times and will always feature a love interest for the 'hero' whether it is necessary to the narrative or not.

I don't know if the quality of your copy was similar to the footage you used to intercut with here, but the soundtrack is great - I would highly recommend you guys listening to it with headphones. I know art is subjective but it's one of my favourite AR Rahman soundtracks and would be cool for you guys to check it out again. I also recommend Mudhalvan as your next Shankar film. You guys have just 2 more movies left in Shankar's Political-Revenge Saga: Mudhalvan (1999) - Another movie extremely loved by everyone, filled with all of Shankar's hallmark elements such as song numbers with grandeur, illogical yet entertaining fight sequences which could be borderline lengthy, a sidekick for comic relief, a heroine who has nothing to do with the core plot, a strong social message, VFX shots which look terrible now etc., Sivaji: The Boss (2007) - Take all of Shankar's film tropes and multiply them by 10 with Superstar Rajinikanth as the hero, then that is Sivaji: The Boss. Shankar's direction combined with Rajini's swag and style made it the most boisterous movie ever made in Tamil cinema. A little warning: There could be some scenes which you guys might find very problematic. Because political correctness wasn't really a thing in Indian cinema back then.

The reason why it clicked very well with the audience then was it struck a cord personally with many who had to deal with the widespread corruption across many government offices and this was one of the very earliest movies talk about it loudly, ppl rooted for Senapati when he slapped the traffic police or when he killed clerks in collector office as if they felt they were in those situations no matter how outlandish the scenes are in the movie! With regards to the killing in TV there is some background on how the satellite TVs came to India: Private satellite TV channels were not licensed in India until 1992. It was a period of socialist, government sector monopoly where only the central government's Doordarshan channel was allowed to broadcast. Since 1988, it has been illegal to run a cable, play a videocassette on a video deck, and send it to homes in some urban areas by cable. When the United States and other nations invaded Iraq in January 1991 and occupied Kuwait, CNN TV broadcast live satellite coverage of the war from Baghdad. CNN is famous all over the world. CNN's broadcast could be seen through a giant dish antenna in India. Dish antennas have sprung up all over the country, now illegal. They brought CNN TV and Star TV to homes through cable networks. Even then the central government did not approve it. But even cable TV could not stop the spread of dish antennas like wildfire. Officials allowed after getting bribe. Indian nationalists criticized foreign satellite TV channels as undermining India's sovereignty and spreading lies. Marxists vehemently objected to America's capitalist policies, saying they would spread and propagate them into socialist India. So the government refused to allow these under the law. But could not stop. Zee Tv, India's first private television channel, was launched in October 1992. But as uplink from India to satellite was not allowed, the programs were filmed in India on videocassettes and then the videocassettes were airlifted to Indonesia and from there telecasted to India by satellite. It reached homes across North India through illegal dishes. At one point, with no other option, the federal government gave dish antennas legal recognition. But it refused permission to broadcast via satellite from India. By then, lakhs of dish antennas had sprung up in all cities and towns across India, providing services to the people. In 1993, other language channels including Sun TV and Asianet TV were launched. A few years later, private channels were allowed to broadcast directly from India via satellite. Rest is history. I totally get the film and the sentiment that pushes Senapathy over the edge (remember that he started his killing spree after his daughter had died!). And living in Southern Italy, I have experience of corruption: as in India, we also need "help" to secure good jobs or services, although now it seems that things are slowly getting better (or, at least, they appear to...). I also totally get the duality: idealistic father, with old fashioned beliefs, and pragmatic son, who's trying to get by in a society where things simply don't get done without a "push". We have a saying "if you walk with a limping man, you'll start limping yourself". Once you get embroiled into corruption, you might start accepting it as a way of life, because at times it's simply impossible to overcome the obstacles put in your way. Sometimes a bribe can be just the 10 euro "for a coffee" you give a public employee who will give you a form impossible to get, or just clear indications on how to proceed through the jungle that's the Italian bureaucracy. So, what I saw was completely normal and believable for me. What I didn't appreciate (and I understand it was certainly due to difference in culture and problems with the language, were the comic relief scenes. But I also understand that it was necessary for the success of a masala film. As it happens in real life, you get the good and the bad, it's up to you to take what you deem important 😁

good review brothers and i never found out any lack in movie and that's because i get used to it (masala movies and complete tonal change) i think. it is also one of my all time favourite and kamal hassan introduced prosthetic makeup in indian cinema for the first time with this movie. the corruption showed in the movie was so true and many real incidents happened like it. the problem was showcased very well in the movie because if any officer getting bribe we can go to anti-bribe authority but even the anti-corruption get bribe to get corrupted then it's totally messed up, which was shown in the movie very well. something i wanted to say is when huge tonal shift happen like serious to comedy scenes we don't see difference because those comedy artist are legendary and very fun to watch such as goundamani and senthil. top comedy artists of india.

Indian is one of the best films of Shankar imo. The fact that it it resonated more with Indian audiences is not only because of the amazing direction, message and make up but because of the fact that in 1997 after 50 years of Independence, India seemed to be almost worse off than when British left India. People all around the nation were highly frustrated at being forced to pay bribes for every small thing. All the tax payers money should have made India even more sophisticated but these corrupt politicians are just a plague to the entire country. I'm a bit put off that you guys didn't enjoy it as much I thought you would. I mean the pre independence stuff alone is too good.

To answer your question (who should we like / it's completely out of character), that's how normal people are. People weren't thinking about how bribes can be fatal to society. Normal nonevil people taking bribes out of selfishness and trying to cover-up their crimes when self-preservation kicks in. And to address why so much masala is added because of the movie economics of that time and lack of exposure to other films(single tonal). Would you be surprised that during those times, succesful movies used to run at cinemas for 200+ days, where repeat audience was hugely expected. So if people make a very serious movie, it might be successful but it wouldn't rake in huge numbers at box office. Funnily enough, one serious film came years before Indian. It was a huge hit and no one understood it's success. The film is 'Shiva' by Ramgopal Varma. Please watch and review it.

He had given justification for showing sympathy towards animals. You know they are not receiving bribe from rich people but they are getting bribe from people who are really poor to live everyday. It is not as tolerable as colonized by British. You didn't notice that Chandru received the government job by working in house of an officer as bribing him. So he is not hesitant to receive any bribe then.

I loved the movie. Now I have seen your take after 27 years, I agree from your perspective on areas like make up, vfx, Australia shoot, etc. but its all about the context. I think movies like this are made from an emotional perspective rather than a cinematic but it worked for most of the audiences back then. Although music might be breaking down the story pace but the quality of songs are not weird at all, I would call it more experimental . Plus with A.R.Rahman, it takes time for any song to grow, that's why those are called slow poison. You should watch Shivaji the boss, you will roll on the floor but that too is on similar lines or corruption and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I saw this review after your Micheal Mathana Kama Rajan movie. This time I felt your review is on dot, pointed out all flaws instead repeating same flaw again and again 😅
Its a little surprising that you liked Anniyan's messaging and not this movies, as Anniyan's messaging is actually a rehash of this movie.. The scenes involving Senapathy (Older Kamal Haasan's Character) were very impactful and also portayal of the ancient martial art form by the Senapathy's character was brilliant. Kamal Haasan's performance as usual was brilliant to say the least.. Its surprising that you dint mention anything about Kamal Haasan's performance, especially when he has won Best Actor National Award .. Chandru's (Younger Kamal Haasan) scenes did not blend with the screenplay so well with the unnecesaary love triangle.. The ending of this movie was very novel for its time as well.. The Production Design was very good in the pre- independence era scenes.. Life is a vicious cycle and in this case Senapathy's crusade back fires as his own son is part of the problem, hence he was in a fix on what to do.. Also by now as u both have watched 500 movies, the excess melodrama in Indian movies from 1990's should now be execused..

It was a very bad movie.... And as always...Kamala Hassan tried to prove to show too much of his acting prowess... Once in the 90s actress Rakhi said a very interesting thing about him - I WANT TO SEE KAMAL WITHOUT ANY MASK... MEANS WITHOUT ANY GETUP, PLAYING SIMPLE NORMAL CHARACTER. That sums it all up...And yes...I am ready to get trolled...now some intellectual minds will try to prove how wrong I am...😂

Yeah Deniz and I were talking off camera about how many movies there are where he wears some kind of special make up ':D

This was the first movie he wears special makeup. Rakhee said it after Chachi 420, not after Indian. When it got released people did not even know that the father was Kamal Haasan. And she also mentioned that Kamal is such a good actor who does not need special makeups.

From Varumayin niram Sivappu to recent hit Vikram, he played without any getup , playing a normal character. There are many more movies, If you want to ignore all those, that’s not a problem with Kamal. Yet you can have your opinion, and I can have my own.😅

@@MHH718 Oh is it realy... What you think? Then I pity you.I just like Mammootty and Mohanlal. With Mr Hassan, I have some issues...But that doesn't mean that I don't like him as an actor.I just loved him in movies like NAYAKAN, the movie with R Madhavan(sorry I don't recall tamil name). I am very far far away from this HINDI and Tamil industry debate.

It's definitely not a very politically correct movie, and I mean politically correct in the straight, positive sense. And Shankar definitely has some fascistic inclinations, maybe it's just down to being not very politically informed. But just to let you know, he's received some blow back of late for some of his politics in Tamil twitter and youtube, and I hope he takes them in a positive spirit and corrects them. But growing up, these were all really big hits, maybe just that many other things seemed important/novel/likeable to the mass audience that they just worked at that time. And the comedy track, that's pretty staple in old commercial movies, and the actors there are comedy legends. Goundamani, Kamal's friend and Senthil, that supervisor, if you look em up, they could have acted in several hundred movies together that the Tamil audience will know what they are getting here, but for you guys, it would have been different. Even back then, I dint care for Urmila's track much and it still feels unnecessary.. If Indian 2 were to be taken seriously, it has to have a perspective that questions the hero character for his fascistic world view and that has to be dealt with like some kind of an illness that he has, that he acknowledges and maybe mends his ways but maybe that's asking too much from Shankar.
