Friends .. the single drum is the MRIDANGAM .. has a history that is thousands of years old, and Hindu mythology associates it with Shiva. It is of south Indian origin, and has a north Indian counterpart called the PAKHAWAJ. The Mridangam, however, takes a new avatar in eastern India. There it is called the KHOL, and is not associated with Shiva, but with Krishna. Its home state is the north-eastern state of Manipur, and has a influence up to Odisha, through Bengal. The dual drum, known as the TABLA-DUGGI is a recent import from Turkey, perhaps less than a millennium (eh!), and probably appeared with the advent of Islam in India. It is now a full-fledged ensemble of Indian musical scenario. Music is the universal language of mankind .. let us enjoy it as it s played .. :)

In my humble opinion, Percussion is a universal language. I may not speak their language, but their hands and drum speak more than words ever could to all.

the words they are speaking are actually a rhythmic solfege. they help them construct the rhythm the same way a singer uses tonal solfege to sing a melody

I think it is a very interesting variation of generally speaking “musical language” or language of “music”. I don’t think anyone could say that something like a flute (any variant) or any stringed instrument lacks in the ability to covey ideas similar to language.

@piwright42 music in India developed in two ways - one out of technicality and precision, like the Indian classical and another, out of necessity or fun (folk). This one here, is the Indian classical (which again has two divisions of Hindustani (Northern Indian classical) and Carnatic (Southern Indian Classical)). It is similar to how the west has folk and classical.

@boucoupthick504 It is different, true. The thaalas are _usually_ not represented on paper and the musicians themselves do not look into paper when performing. The paper identifies the notes/beats to be played, the beginning and end of a music sentence, the duration of the notes and the raaga. A solo artist usually keeps track of the beats with the foot just like the hand (except you don't use your toes :D) or has someone else keep track of it for him/her, like here.

Great performance. Some of the sounds they make with their fingers on the drums are very peculiar... sometimes it doesn't sound like human skin hitting the surface of the drum; it sounds almost metallic.

@boucoupthick504 I am a still-training Indian Classical(Carnatic) flute player... :). The "scatting" - that is just the vocalization of the beats. That is the base rhythm they follow through out the performance. If you listen carefully you'll notice that what they play eventually will be composed of those base beats he vocalizes in the beginning. I don't know much about the Indian classical percussion but, usually in Indian classical music those are the general rules which are always followed.

@kudalaMangalooru

Unlike western pop music drums, you do not replace 'drum heads' of Tabla & Mridangam. Yes, they are repairable, but from what I know, it is hard to get them in tune, so you usually keep multiple sets and get new ones when the old ones wear out.
