Exploring along the scenic Hillsborough River and the surrounding wilderness. The area today is part of Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve. The river and surrounding wilderness have many layers of history that span thousands of years. Along the way I discover an ancient Native American Indian mound, one of many that can be seen along the river. It's a reminder of the past and how the natives built these areas up above the surrounding floodplain. They hunted, camped and traveled through these areas. Utilizing the limestone on around the mound to help make tools and weapons. The mounds were used for various purposes over the centuries and offered great vantage points along the river helping to identity a tribes territory as well. The area in more recent times in the 1800's and early 1900's was used for logging activity and many old Cypress Trees were cut down and logged out of this area. I could see lots of wildlife by the river including snakes, alligators and birds just to name a few. It's so peaceful out here roaming by the river it's nice to explore here and come across sites from the past. Enjoy the adventure and thank you!
