That’s not going to work out for the kids when they eventually grow up and they get into big trouble and they don’t understand Why.

E E This really depends how dicipline is used. Mom would tell dad we were troublesome & we got the belt -- the buckle end while she watched. It was terrifying. 2 of us really got hit a lot; the eldest never got hit. The Golden Child. The punishment could be for any little thing - even a look. One day a classmate asked me why I had bruises on my legs. It was from the belt buckle. I didn't know what to say. I remember being 8 years old & thinking, "When I'm in charge things are going to be different." Years later I realized mom was the one who encouraged/told dad to beat us. She's a constant whiner and complainer; nothing is okay or good enough. Mistrust, name-calling, shame & fear were the methods they used. When I was in charge, things were different. I made mistakes, I wasn't a perfect parent, but I sure gave it 100%. I am happy to say my adult kids are responsible, happy adults, and good, involved parents. I live with my mom now, & understand what she is. I also understand better why my dad was a depressed, troubled man. Mom is still an unrepentant, controlling, iron clad bitch and bigot. She is 96 and physically well......but boy, is she angry that she's gonna die someday. She's financially well situated and never wanted for anything. She's still hyper-critical, a perfectionist and taskmaster. Living with her has taken years off my life. My kids understand & get me out of the house as often as they can. I am grateful they understand my situation. Sorry for the long post.

I got mad, he looked at me, crying in fear and said, “mommy im sorry i wont do it again, please dont hit me.” I felt terrible for instilling such fear on my little boy. From then on, I never spanked my son. I just talk to him making him understand why he needs to make good choices. I raise my voice sometimes. I'm a white girl, from an upper class family, and my parents never laid a hand on me, physically. But, my dad is pretty old-fashioned, in that he think he's the "man of the house". Ironically, it's my mother who is the "bread winner". Though he's never hit me or my sisters, sometimes, the psychological pressure can be very... confusing/unnerving. Living in constant fear that he COULD hit you, or flip out on you, emotionally, is exhausting. Ironically, I would only get scared at night-time, when everything was calm. Like, my heart would be pounding in my chest, and I'd ball up my fists around my blankets, and I'd have this HUGE fear he'd just barge in and start beating me up, shouting "WHY are you such a failure?! WHY can't you do better?! What's WRONG with you?!" But, it would never happen... I don't live with my parents anymore, but learned that I have symptoms of BiPolar Disorder. And, seeing as my Dad has never opened up or talked about ANYTHING in his life (the loss of HIS Dad and OLDER BROTHER dying when he was little), not talking about girlfriends or relationships he was in {and out of} growing up, or how he met my mother, whether or not he loves her, it's kind-of like he's not really THERE at all... I can't speak for everyone, but, at least, in MY world, growing up, successes/rewards for correct behavior MAY be acknowledged, but, more often than not, get overlooked. So, even, if you got, like, 3 As and a C, on your report card, you tend to only focus on the failure, instead of the three OTHER successes.
@brigittea5110

Your experience is very similar to what I went through as a child. I had a sleeping problem as a child. The constant fear of suddenly being pulled out of bed in the middle of the night, being yelled and screamed at and never really knowing why, and what you did wrong this time. It's like you are constantly in a dilemma: Whatever you do is wrong or not enough. Mom was the main bread winner, Dad was the boss ,like the king and we are the servant . It's like you are a hamster running in your wheel, but no matter how fast, how good, how perfect you run, you never reach your goal because it is never good enough. I have read some interesting theories about this. When children grow up in constant fear, they constantly have a high adrenalin level. Adrenalin is responsible for our ' fight or flight' response. It makes you alert , awake, your heart beats faster, your muscles tense up , you are ready to flee or fight . It's important for our survival when we are in a danger, but it is very unhealthy if we are in this state 24 hours due to cicumstances that we as children had to live in. Children deserve to be loved the way they are, no matter if they are good or bad in math , have good grades or average grades, are good at sports or not....... A healthy ,happy child has a balanced adrenalin and serotinin level in their brain. The serotonin now, is responsible for our feelings of calm, relaxed and feeling happy.Obvious if the adrenalin is constant high, the serotonin is low , not in balance . No wonder, we feel nervous ,stressed and unhappy. No wonder we have panic attacks and depressions , constant fear........ This also causes kids to have low self esteem and a low sense of self worth. How could we have a good self esteem, if everything we do is never good enough. It rather gives one the constant feeling od inadequacy , of beeing a failure, not good for nothing. Have a nice day 💖

My mother used the wooden or METAL spoon as well, if we got out of line. But her temper was much worse. We got hit for not making the salad before she got home. We refused sometimes, said "we're going on strike today." That's all it took for her. When she did get home, we'd barricade up in our rooms. We knew we were going to get it. Funny what she would say though: "You little shits better make that fucking salad before I get home.... Oh no, okay I am going to get the wooden spoon out." Or: "I have spoiled you guys rotten!!" When I was about ten, a friend of mine and I were playing on the ice on the local river, and a neighbour saw us and told our parents. When my friend got home, he got the belt, as "punishment". When I got home, my parents said, "NEVER do that! You could fall right through into the icy water. And what if you found yourself stuck UNDER the ice so you couldn't find the opening, and you'd be TRAPPED under it while you drowned!" I thought, "Oh YIKES! I'll never do THAT again!" Which one of us learned a better lesson? My friend whose parents were brutal -- or ME, when my parents treated me like a rational being?

So glad you lucked out with having mature parents. Spanking is so often disguised as being done for the good of the child. All that it is is removing your frustration on a defenceless child. Funny how it suddenly stops when the child grows up enough where the parent knows they won’t stand for anymore and will most likely hit back. It’s not like this child suddenly started behaving… It’s just that they grew up and the parents didn’t feel safe enough to spank them anymore.

My cousin was meek and obedient and did well when she started school, but had many chores at home, cleaning and the big vegetable garden and the cooking and caring for the younger children.. One day when she was 7 the teacher patted her on the back and my cousin flinched. The teacher looked down her neck under the t shirt, took her to the principal, they found solid bloody bruises and lash marks from neck to ankles from the vacuum cleaner cord my aunt whipped her with when my cousin couldn't move the heavy armchair to vacuum under it.( In the kitchen she hit her with whatever metal utensil came to hand. in the garden, a stick or the metal hand shovel.) Then they called her brother out of first grade and examined him. No one talked to my cousins about where to go for help, no one called my aunt and she continued to abuse the children till they were in high school. Hitting a child is no joke, saying you saw heaven is no joke, being afraid of getting beaten to death for 23 minutes is no joke, NOTHING about hurting a smaller, weaker child is a joke. I remember ending up with a B in geography with 12 As in grade 4 and still got pressured by my father. And not to mention ending up with a 92 in my home language and still ending up crying because of all the scolding I got.

Same here! My father wanted to see only straught A on our report card. Nothing else ! So, having one B meant a beating and no praise for all the rest of the As. Having 2 Bs meant a beating and 6 month house arrest (no playing outside) to better the grades. I used to look out the window and see the neighbor kids playing and running, while I had to do endless extra homework until it was time to go to bed. To my father playing was a waste of time. Children should never play, they should either be studying or working( in the family bussiness). Rough times growing up!

My friend from India was never hit by her parents. They were psychologists and knew alternative methods. She turned out to be a lovely person. She was very respectful. Children can be raised without being spanked and still turn out well.

It's really only the last couple of generations ( well, I guess we're going on the 3rd now) of non immigrant white parents who don't whip their kids (much). Even now, it depends on how & where we were raised in the U.S. As for my Daddy, as he was getting ready for work he talked to us about chores, school,⁸ not sassing Momma or fighting with each other.....etc. just before he put on his belt, he would give it couple of loud, piercing snap n pops. He didn't need to whip us all that often, but we knew he would! Momma's "weapon" was a fly swat. She had 2 of them. One for flies. One for our behinds. Sweet as Momma was, we knew she'd get us too.

See, the point is to give your kids a little fear of their actions but not so much that you overdo it. It's just to make them understand the responsibility and consequences they are eventually going to face throughout their life. If they can't deal with simple things they're not ready for the world which is much more complicated, all you have to do is discipline them enough to make them realise so you don't have to necessarily beat them but if they are a case like for example say Ryan, then it becomes a necessity
