The Indian scops owl, also known as Otus bakkamoena, is a small nocturnal bird found in the southern regions of Asia from eastern Arabia through the Indian Subcontinent, except the far north, east across much of Southeast Asia to Indonesia.1 It is one of the largest scops owls, measuring 22-25 cm in length and weighing 125 to 160 grams.2 The upperparts are grey or brown, depending on the morph, with faint buff spotting, and the underparts are buff with fine darker streaking.03 The species epithet is derived from "bakamuna," the Sinhalese name for the white barn owl and the brown fish owl.3 It prefers forest and desert vegetation and groups of densely foliaged trees in gardens and mango orchards around villages and cultivation. It mainly eats insects, grasshoppers, moths, and butterflies.
