Yes I do agree that US education is one of the best in the world, but I also believe the fact that US is not how it used to be. It really hit me when balaji said this - getting a ban from US is like getting a ban from all the country. US is being put on a pedestal and because of this the it adds up to the credibility of an american soft power. I've been in Boston for 6 years now and wouldn't change a thing but I constantly tell students who approach me to do their research on what exactly do they want from this country because there's enough risk here to send you back to where you came from. I survived 2018's tense immigration talks where companies outright refused to give me interviews for even internships due to visa tensions [ Internships usually extrapolate into full time and H1B comes into play so they ask all visa questions right off the bat ], then I graduated in 2020 right in the middle of the pandemic and now in 2023 I survived 3 layoffs and still going strong. Why doesn't India have "An Indian dream"? Why is it only the USA? The dream was never meant for people born in the USA. It was originally a dream paid for by big shipping companies and later airlines. Also back when international phone calls were expensive the phone companies made bank when people phoned home. Today large real estate developers drool when large number of immigrants legal or not come here. Even during a water shortage large tract developments will be built for "the American dream" of home ownership. Many money launderers from East Asia take advantage of this. Ever hear of the book/movie Crazy Rich Asians? They spend money buying homes and even some shopping malls have completely caved in to their spending habits.

On similar lines, Manisha wanted management courses with MS in ME? It would have been easier to take the experience from Sweden and then plan future studies. It is a psychological game -- Both of these students rejected an offer to work with Volvo in Sweden to go to Saint LOUIS university. THAT WAS DUMB. DO NOT MISS SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY. Work abroad, even if it is for only a year. It makes your case to enter the US much stronger. -- Pay your university fees in advance. These students didn't pay, and they were denied entry. See most of the students will seek a job in USA. That is a fact and they also know this even legally they are allowed after they complete the degree. Issue is that they want to screen people who are not bringing enough funds - education is their best thing to sell. This will happen to most people who can not show enough funds and they can find reasons in refuse what’s up and email to prove that she or he may be here to get a job. It is obvious where they harass and deport while borders on south are open welcoming illegals who are being bussed to the major cities. Also issues is that these kids are way more brighter than average us student and will successful in doing well in life.

In all my years, I never realized that India was such a terrible place that despite this kind of experience, these students and many others are still trying to get into the US, or Australia, or wherever.... anywhere but India! I have found India a great place to live and work. And a place of great opportunity as well. Sure, there were always a few educated people who had a craze for living in white countries but I thought that most of us preferred the life and opportunities here. How wrong I have been obviously. Kamal Bali, who I presume may have been your boss in Volvo, was a classic example of living the Indian dream. Also a mechanical engineer (from Roorkee), I can't think of many countries which could have provided him the opportunities and environment to excel like India provided him. And there is so much more happening today. We have over 100 startups in space tech alone, all headquartered in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. Yet we have hundreds of bright, educated Indian students braving harassment and humiliation merely to be able to live and work in a white country. Even our educational institutions are so exciting, or so I thought. Masters students, even in aerospace, now have such exciting education and work happening here. Exciting new companies like Agnikul are being incubated by institutes like IIT Madras. Yet we run after some ephemeral life in a white country! Clearly, we as a country have a long way to go! To make our country more attractive to ourselves!

Did they misunderstand that US sentiment is now turning against Indians? 11 Indian students were killed in a month earlier this year , 7 from one university, and no one cared. It didn't even make the news nationally. When I mentioned it to my co-workers they didn't know anything about it. In Olathe, Kansas, two Indian engineers were shot. Sadly there are a number of dubious universities operating in the US (and Canada) that are supposed to be “online” universities. These often serve as vehicles for illegal immigration to the US. It is unfortunate that genuine students sometimes get penalized, as is the case here. Every country has a right to determine who crosses its borders and sometimes the process can be unpleasant. Sadly, Indians have been known to abuse the system in the past and I have personal experience with this. I came to the US in 1998 as a SAP consultant. I had several years of experience with SAP and also a certification from SAP. But That was a time when anyone who spell SAP could get an H1B and that lead to a lot of abuse. So immigrations agents became extra strict about such jobs. Sadly the actions of a few dishonest people affects everyone. Most telemarketing scams today are calls from India and that gives everyone a bad name.

@@suhasini1354 Maybe they won't lie and work illegally if immigration rules weren't so rigged against them. Look, people don't always wake up one day and think about doing something illegal just because they wanted to, its their circumstances that forces them to when they have no better choice. Its easy to sit in your comfort zone and virtue signal how you made it here legally so everyone else should follow the same, when you're overlooking the fact that immigration rules weren't this rigged back in the day. Also, like OP mentioned, there clearly is a double standard here when it comes to targeting illegal activities. The folks who cross the border illegally, who barely have any technical skills, are hardly targeted for working, while Indian students who actually make it here legally are more often targeted even though they are more than deserving to be here for their technical skills. Rather I want to go back to India after 2 years and work there. Their own heroism led to their downfall. The way in which I am hearing their answers seems that they had gone there to study and then work there.

There are so many red flags as one of the comment mentioned. I completed my MBA from UT Dallas and from my experience officers are generally very supportive . Students are not 100% clean in this case. Big lesson for new students.

Honestly I wouldn’t say so, because everyone does not have the same experience all the time. This is pretty clear they were targeted and I have heard some immigration officers just arbitrarily make up their mind to trap someone just to feel like they did their job. I usually don’t have issues but once I was asked to show my grade card on my phone once coming back from vacation in India. My friend had his US bank account details asked and unnecessary questions like why was the account created with this bank.

I agree with you. I was once interning with a consultancy like 10 years ago and 1 thing I learned is that nobody gets rejected without a reason. The problem is that people don’t admit or accept things they have done wrong in terms of the process, interview or even the documents. They just act clueless. But they know their mistakes

See, I was in Indian Immigration for few years. So, as per my experience I felt like I should share this with you. ( 48:20 ) As you said that once you get the deportation stamp/remark on your passport (specially from USA) or say record, that doesn't mean you can't go to any other (non USA) country (even for job or PR) or there will be trouble for you and all. Don't worry at all. You can go anywhere except USA. As you were worried about your future, let me tell you one thing, that remark will be in Indian and USA records only. Also, every time or many times you will be (may be) asked in Indian immigration about your US deportation story (be prepared for it all the time). I advice you to not get irritated with those interrogations. Coz that's a part of procedure. Coz we face so many cases per day that, we have to stop and ask about it. If you are clear, if all your documents are clear, I tell you my brother, no one will stop you to go abroad. If anyone stops, file a case in the court, they will have to answer in the court in written and if they loose the case there will be trouble for every responsible officer of the Indian immigration. So, what my point is.. we won't STOP you, we will just ASK you the related qs. So, don't think that your life will be spoiled, you won't be able to go abroad due to this and all. You still can go to Europe (as you had transit flight from Paris so you or anyone might think otherwise). They have your zero deportation record. I have seen so many Indian deportees going to other countries and have a comfortable life. This has happened with you for the first time, that's why you are having these thoughts. Most important: Don't tear a single page of the passport. Not even a small portion of passport. That will be a cancelled passport and you won't be able to clear even Indian immigration with that. If you have any issue with any remarks on passport, consult with the RPO and apply for new passport. Please follow the official guidelines of passport office here. (I am just giving one advice from my side.) (It's too late in the night for me, but as you were worried, I had to write this. It is for all.) PN: I don't work in Immigration anymore. So, can't guide you or anyone for other issues. PN 2: This coment is just for your concern. I won't say that I am 100% right. So, please don't take it as a legal thing. Do your own research. Take care. Don't worry. USA is not everything.

Really sorry to hear what happened with them, however I do think having proof of preparation for immigration questions and mock interviews on your phone, and not paying the semester fee are two big red flags!

Why have these students had Whatsapp interviewing questions and answers with Immigration? They probably are not good at English. Definitely a red flag and then not paying for the semester. As Shah Rukh Khan has commented on his US Immigration experience "Whenever I (Shah Rukh Khan) get too big for my boots and my ego goes stratospheric I should visit the US coz they bring me down to earth with a bang!!!

I did my master's at USC, where tuition fees are paid based on the number of units(credits) you registered for. Many universities only let you register for these courses after in-person passport verification. So, you would not know how much your tuition will cost when landing. Immigration officers must be well-informed about this.

If they were able to show proof of funds like bank loan, account statements when questioned, it would've been resolved right away. some immigration consultancies prepare fake documents to prove funds and looks like same happened in their case.

But they can get approximate amounts of traveling checks … man they arrived without any funds to be able to pay in future… bet they would take one credit and work rest time

@@anusehgal7253 Doesn't work like that for international students. Colleges only issue i20 when sufficient proof of funds is provided. Also, there's a minimum credit limit per semester, like 7 credits or so.

@@anusehgal7253 I took a loan during my masters and my bank only transferred it once I reached US and got my classes assigned to me. Usually there is a gap between start date and when your advisor assigns you courses and you can ask bank to transfer during that gap. And you can ask bank to provide a letter stating that the student has loan approved by us for X amount.

Thank you for sharing this Parth. This was very disheartening to hear. I hope Balaji and Manisha get the justice they deserve. More power to you guys ❤️ It would be really helpful if you could make a video about all the rights that immigrants have in such scenarios.

There are no rights. Immigration officer can deny entry. They could not satisfy the immigration officer and that's about it. No justice or injustice

This happened to me in the past at the immigration-very traumatic experience. Talking rude and scaring that they will destroy my life and profile. The officer who was dealing with me showed racism. He started asking me a about my university job how much I earn, and targeted to check my bag. They found a pickle in my bag and they charged me a hefty fee and in the meantime when I was in line to pay the fee - he started taunting me that in the future you need this document of evidence when you apply for green card - at that time I was a F1 student.

It really isn't "racism" but nationalism. Americans aren't studying math or computer science that much due to the classes having over 80% foreign students. American college students will study business or other majors instead. This has been going on for over 40 years. Back in the early 1980s if you went into a college class room and it was filled with Chinese or other Asians most Americans would turn around and walk out. American high schools don't push studying math as they do in Asia and therefore when Americans reach college they are about 2-3 years behind. Asian students bring the average up and Americans don't like competing with that. The US education can't change this for the next 30 years. There isn't a Russian satellite going up like with Sputnik in 1957. High school is mostly babysitting with a little studying and sports and other fun things. Also Asians have tiger moms who push their kids to study all the time.

@@PIANOPHUNGUY@PIANOPHUNGUY If any American has an interest in the field and is willing to work hard, no one is stopping them from studying Math or Computer Science. Everybody just wants a better quality of life. How is it Asians fault if an American doesn't want to compete or work hard? Is it Asians fault that the education system isn't pushing math down high school kids? Having tiger parents is not amazing. The stress and trauma lives with you for a long time. If you really want something you should work hard for it and not give excuses such as competition. America is a country built by immigrants. This particular officer was bent on sending these people back, he didn't even give supporting documents. This is racism.
