I taught at Harry Hopman/Saddlebrook I’m the late 1889’s and I knew Mary Pierce as a kid. Her dad Jim was a little (lot) crazy but always nice to me. Mary and her brother David were great kids. Mr. Pierce had definite faults but also a good side. I had many great conversations and visits with him. He’s come by the office at Lakeside late in the evening when I was stringing and he crack me up with his stories and have me laughing my ass off. Mary worked harder than anyone I’ve ever seen and had a fantastic career. I had the pleasure of hitting with her a couple times. She was great at 12. I thought she’d be Top 20, but was surprised and happy to see her become World Champion.

I think it was after this match that Mary was 'born again' and improved massively in the space of a few months. She bounced back and won Hilton Head barely losing any games. Just shows she had the game but she needed the mental strength...once she had that she was a much better player

Gary Mckee beat Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, and Conchita Martinez at the French Open. She also won the doubles at the French Open with Hingis that year

She was also in great shape too, which I think made a world of difference in those long matches against Seles and Hingis at RG.

It is known here,in Europe, that Mary pierce use steroids (nandrolone) when she was destroying everybody that period. And a Belgian coach accused Justine Hénin when she get bigger between 03-04 to have used the same product Mary pierce use to dominate the clay season in 2000.

retitle the video to "Mary Pierce highlights" Hingis races to 5-1 in the second set, but you would never know it according to the selected highlights.

After the first three games, one could have been guilty of thinking that this could be a 6-0 6-0 match for Pierce. But Hingis really showed how she could adjust her game so well and started hitting harder and earlier, and going for the lines more. Mary's issue as a player was that she was single-gear and had a hard time adjusting if she wasn't in control of a point.
