Yeah, this makes me sad. Coming from Ft Wayne, I may make it to West Beach once a year or once every couple/few years! And I grill out (money for food, which is high right now), so that's just an added cost on top of all that

It's PUBLIC land. We pay TAXES. We LIVE HERE!! All we want is to swim, hike, get away from traffic, watch the sunset.... maybe pee. The restrooms are CLOSED 3 of 4 seasons of the year, even though I paid the Indiana Dunes State Park YEAR-long pass-- why no bathroom access, hmm??? Is this going to be the same for the National Park?? Geeze, I have to pay a different fee for every beach I go to. Sick of paying for being OUTSIDE. But, kicked out BEFORE SUNSET in many places. Can't even collect rocks, for the love of God. Damn.

If you really wanted to educate people on the differences between the National Park and the State Park, there would NOT be a National Park sign pointing to the State Park entrance when you are traveling on US 12 and exiting on 49 North. Two signs lead you to the State Park that say National Park.
@IndianaDunes

Thank you for your comment. The National Park actually completely surrounds the State Park on all sides, but we understand that the signage can be confusing.

They are literally forcing all of us to buy an annual pass for $45! And this is ridiculous! Why can't we just pay taxes and have the beaches available to all of us instead of getting nickel-and-dimed by admission fees?!
@IndianaDunes
2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, only a very small percent of our taxes go toward supporting all of the national parks. The new fee will greatly support infrastructure improvements and additional staffing. There are cheaper weekly passes, but we do recommend the $45 pass.

@@jigsaw9618 agree, unfortunately, when the FEDS take over everything, we don't have a choice. We have to pay just to be outside. This is ridiculous. Just wait till the lifeguards come and you can't swim past waist-high, or after 6 PM, like at the Indiana Dunes. And watch where you step! --baby diapers and trash all over, because no one cleans up the beach, or empties the cans. I see lifeguards sitting around bossing people, but the trash blows into the water. Now, whaaat?

Don't mind the entry fee. But we've been ask to given away out Credit Card Pin to enter and had to argue hard that we're not giving away the Pin. They almost didn't let us in. Another Card Not requesting a Pin saved us... But Kind of schocking the way the cashier pressed on us to given her the Pin..

You aren't going to change any of the reasons why we love going to the park, the lake and the dunes. Yet we have to pay for 'improvements' where you literally will not be able to improve anything.
@IndianaDunes

Thank you for your comment, Steve. While the new fee will help with infrastructure and staffing, a lot of the improvement will be maintenance. With nearly six million people coming to the Dunes every year, the fee will help to maintain the parks for future generations.

This is the most stupidest thing for Indiana to bring in money! I only visit this park once a year!! Why in the heck would I pay $25 for a few hours? This will definitely decrease visitors! The Discover pass is $30 for a year and you can visit all of the state parks on Washington! Indiana is hurting for money!

Hi auntjen2u. 😊 The Indiana Dunes State Park already has an entry fee. The Indiana Dunes National Park is the park getting a new fee system this year. The funds from the passes will go to the Indiana Dunes National Park and the National Park Service.

The Dunes were my childhoods playground. I live in Arizona now, but the Dunes are my sanctuary when I visit family back in Indiana. Having to buy a national park pass seems insane, but I hope monies can be used to keep the beaches clean. I'm always aghast at how much trash washes ashore when I visit the Dunes. I hope dogs are still allowed. Most national parks hate dogs but love horses.

If you add up all the taxes I pay, I am paying over 50%. 36% Federal, 8% State and 4% local. Property tax that amounts to about $15,000 each year and after this I pay between 6% and 20% tax on every penny I spend. I bought one of the America the Beautiful passes when I turned 62 and was told that it would get me into every National Park in the nation free. I see that is not the case. My opinion of the NPS and my two US Senators and Representative just decreased by 50%.
@IndianaDunes

America the Beautiful passes do get you into the Indiana Dunes National Park! They do not, however, get you into the Indiana Dunes State Park. Since you are 62 you now qualify for the national park senior pass. You can either get a $20 annual or an $80 lifetime pass that will get you into all of the national park sites. You can find more info here - www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm

The lady in the video goes to the dry cleaners I worked at once in a while. Super nice. So are her parents... that being said... no discount for locals??? Depending on where you're going they can get you twice in one day ?! I get it costs to maintain but isn't that what taxes are for?!?!?! We live in a world where you have to be able to afford to be healthy, physically and mentally, educated and now to enjoy nature? I'm sad.
@IndianaDunes

There is a pass that works just for the Indiana Dunes that is cheaper than the national park pass that works at all of the parks in the country! Also, if you buy any of the passes, you can go to as many Indiana Dunes National Park sites in a day that you want. You won't be charged again.
@IndianaDunes

Great questions. The National Park cannot offer a local discount because it is federal land; however, we recommend the Indiana Dunes pass, which is only $45 (a $35 discount from the America the Beautiful Pass). Your taxes are definitely used to support our National Parks, but it is only a very small percentage. The entry fees will help the National Park better maintain the park and start work on "deferred maintenance" projects.

@IndianaDunes

We haven't heard anything from the national park about gates being installed yet. The passes will be hung on rearview mirrors and rangers will be able to check for them. If there is no pass visible, they'll be able to check online to see if one has been purchased.

This is class warfare. Take the public commons away from the working locals... and only the wealthy weekenders from Chicago and SW Michigan are going to shrug it off. It's not the public's fault our inept Congress won't earmark the appropriate tax dollars to continue the park's access, protection and restoration. A desperate and gross solution.

@@IndianaDunes we don't want "equitable". We want to get something for the TAXES we pay. Equity is a communist term, anyway. By the way, Portage Beach dunes is full of landfill garbage -- rusted metals, and thick, sharp shards of glass, etc. And the water is often closed when the US Steel accidentally dumps their poison in the lake. TAXES should take care of this!
