Legend of a film when it first came out, this was as great as the comic book version , What a time it was. Decided to watch it on Halloween, and what a throwback. Honestly, for a movie made in the 1980s, it was done really good especially with the limited tech they had. Top tier soundtrack, storyline, and honestly the best Indiana Jones movie out of the whole series. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's worth watching, especially this one. That periscope scene does make me wonder: Without it in the movie, it doesn't make sense that Indy would be able to ride the submarine to their hideout. Wouldn't they submerge completely? An easy fix to this would have simply been to say that the ark couldn't be put inside the submarine because of its size, so it had to ride on top (along with Indy) and they didn't submerge because they didn't want to risk harming the ark. With 'Crystal Skull', George Lucas had come to Steven Spielberg several times with variations of the idea and each time Steven said he "didn't want to do another alien movie" since he had done several up to that point. But George eventually came up with the line for Steven, "Oh, they're not aliens, they're 'interdimensional beings'." It seems that was enough to convince Steven to do it. He should have listened to his instinct. A year or two after it came out, Harrison was on stage at some event and was asked about doing another Indy movie. Hi response was something like, "I'd love to do another one...but this time we won't be going to Mars..." seeming to throw some shade at 'Crystal Skulls'. The rumor is that Indy 5 will involve time travel, but I hope that rumor turns out NOT to be true.

PurpleBox89 When Indy was in the Map Room, Sallah was captured and was to be shot by while tied up. It most likely would’ve taken place after that deleted scene where Sallah spilled the food on the Germans. A young German soldier (no younger than 18 or 19) was tasked with pulling the trigger to kill him but he couldn’t do it and refused. It was largely unimportant to the story as a whole, but it would’ve been nice to see that not all German soldiers were cold-blooded Nazis and some were forcefully recruited against their will.
@josephstachler7613

I was going to make a similar comment. The actor playing the Nazi soldier ordered to kill Sallah apparently gave a tremendous performance that had everyone on the set talking about it. But I had read the scene was to have occurred while Indy and Marion were trapped in the Well of the Souls.

0:46 Indy was probably thinking to himself, "Oh my gosh, that looks SO fake...I can't believe Satipo fell for that." Good thing Lucasfilm Ltd. cut this from the final film. FUN FACT: The reason everyone was messing around with Steven Spielberg is because they were jealous that he was the ONLY person who did not get sick while filming in the scorching Cairo settings.

Yep. That's exactly how it happened. I'm glad at least footage of what would have been the fight sequence exists at least in outtake form. It's too bad Ford was so sick they didn't do the scene as planned, but then again the finished scene is one of the more memorable moments in the movie, let alone the series in general.

I heard it wasn't just Ford who was ill that day. A lot of the cast & crew were. Spielberg was one of the few who wasn't as he only ate tinned or packaged food & didn't drink anything that wasn't from a bottle or a can.

@@jasonrigone7771 When filming on location you have a local catering company prepare meals during the working day, and on days off, or outside of working hours, the hotel has food, or people can go and eat in restaurants or what-have-you while visiting the area. Nothing to do with being cheap, Spielberg probably didn't brave eating out and the others did. For many, sampling local food when on location in another country, or another region in your own country, is part of the fun. You get you try things completely new. Some people aren't as open to trying to new foods. Anyway, this wasn't the first production in Tunisia to be hit with food poisoning, which is something Spielberg was probably also aware of.

Raiders is such a perfect movie, because of the structure of the script, because of the tautness of the editing, because Indy himself is hungry to go after the object of the quest, the Ark, because the Ark is a DEADLY artifact, containing the very power and wrath of God, because of just the right tone of humor, seriousness, suspense, horror and incredible action set-pieces, in a way none of the subsequent installments have been able to completely successfully recapture. Hire Lawrence Kasdan or his son to write Indy 5! We need a Kasdan back in there!

WWII diesel subs only ran fully submerged on batteries when making attack runs, or needing to sneak past defenses (or for really heavy seas). Otherwise running at the surface, or at "snorkle depth" (with a literal snorkel to draw fresh air for the engines) was standard procedure. So, Indy would have had _something_ to hang onto. Script had scenes of him using his whip to tie himself to the sub.
