ESPN made this comment in an article the other day "The Pacers are over the salary cap because of the $42.3M Pascal Siakam FA hold". When you do your salary cap podcast, could you please touch on what the Pacers can (and more importantly, can't) do regarding signing any free agents this summer? Most Pacers fans aren't used to being over the cap so they think that signing guys like Paul George or Malik Monk is simply getting Herb Simon to open up his checkbook when I'm sure there are other restrictions in place by the CBA.

I'm pretty sure to have a possibility of signing anyone else around 10 ish to 14mil, then to retain Obi. Possibly sign a minimum player on a 2.7mil or whatever. Pascal would absolutely have to take about 23.4 mil. I doubt they get him on a 1st year to take that. Maybe you can talk him into less though in the first couple year's.. Even if we could retain Obi and possibly get Caleb Martin for 10ish mil a year. That would be helpful.. Something.. Maybe he takes 28mil ish the first year. But they won't.. We will likely sign him to a ridiculous amount. Lose our young guy's and sign no one else.

Pacers need to pay Siakam whatever it takes to keep him. The "not worth max" people probably think a max deal is simply a blank check for maximum years at the highest dollar amount allowed with no negotiation taking place. His talent and veteran leadership is too important to this team to let him go. Obi at $12-15 million/yr sounds right.

It would be interesting to create salary matching thru the extension signing and sell high if it felt right. Upgrading wing position and possibly taking a swing at facilitating another team’s possible trades. Rumors of San Antonio and Pelicans and Rockets, all have amazing guys we could swoop, all those teams have up and coming log jams at forward.

Signing Siakam is priority number one in my opinion, next would be the consideration of keeping Nemhard a Pacer. Obi Toppin should also be on the priority list as well. I'm not sure whats happening with Jalen Smith and why he played very little in the playoffs. I thought Jalen was a good rebounder and played well under the rim. Doug McDourmett's salary is way to high for such a talented core of young players on the team.

I like Nembhard a lot, but I'm not going to get that overly excited about a couple solid game's. Not when he could have been doing that all year. Most of this year we have to remember. He had fell off a lot from where he was. Even if you can say well this came after Haliburton had went down. Well okay, but if that's all it was. Then if he's had this in him. He should have been the only PG on the floor. Whether it be with the 2nd unit. Or to play for Haliburton when he's been injured, or not playing as well. We should be able to say go in and take over. Which they should have been doing instead of playing Hali some these past couple series. Because you could clearly see Hali wasn't himself. Nembhard having the will and determination to be that guy has been and always will be my favorite attribute about player's. It has to come with some instincts though and a voice. If you think you can play better and step it up handling the ball some game's.. Feeling yourself or whatever.. Let it be known and ask the coach to put you in by yourself. See what you can do.. But you better perform when you do. Those player's with the right mix and skill are always the best. He has good footwork, skill and pace he plays with. There's no reason why he shouldn't be playing more PG by himself. He was definitely a lor more fresh than Hali. Both of them need to improve the defense tho.. Hali even more so I'm afraid. Nembhard does move a lot better at time's. Especially late in the season. His drive and how much he likes to take the big shot is apparent to anyone that watches. I love that, but I want him to become very good at it. Lol if he's gonna want to be that kind of player. I'm not ready to crown him or anything for those game's. I still feel Mathurin could be huge next season and I haven't forgotten what Obi and TJ have given us consistently either. If anything we've been needing this and more so expecting more of what Nembhard only gave us in those last couple game's. Odd thinking that way about a 2nd rd pick coming in as a 2nd year Rookie. But it was his ability to take those big shots, while being much more efficient is what we were missing all year. Early on he'd miss very easy shots he, or anyone at the NBA level should have made. Little floaters right in front of the rim. I remember that even being frustrating, because he wasn't hitting his 3's either. It's exactly why playing time and development is so important of a young team.. The one we have, or could be had.. If we aren't careful. Fine line we should be trending on. We could have definitely done better playing our young guy's.. and about signing/drafting.. I'm still pissed about not making a valid effort to get Derrick Jones Jr. last year. He stayed in FA forever and was such an obviously great signing to me. Especially for what you pay and get from him all around.. I couldn't make sense of why a team in such bad need of Wing depth. Wasn't signing, or drafting enough of it. Whether it be a 6'8 SF, or a 6'6 athletic, pesky defender that gets under anyone's skin. Who's gonna leak out, get to the rim, hit 3's and play Defense consistently.. at a great price.. should have been hella obvious. Maybe they tried, I'll never know.. But for how long he lingered and went for. I highly doubt it. Yet even though his stats didn't jump off the page last year. He had a great +/- and with his consistency and that alone with his D should have been enough. An obvious let's go get this guy type of thing for me.. Also isn't a guy expecting a lot and doesn't have a huge ego.. Just a great player and can contribute to any offense/defensive team out there. 🔌 and play types. Which imo, is all we ever really needed to focus on this early. Idk how I'm going to feel about going into this off-season and what will undoubtedly happen.. I'm feeling uneasy.. lol idk. Pacers could always make an unexpected trade as well.. One that could either make us solid, or make me even more upset. I think it will be incredibly interesting to see what we do with Jarace Walker moving forward.. and if we retain Obi.. How he plays and Jarace, what that could determine for our future. I doubt they see Pascal as a piece 2 or 3 year's from now.. Despite the willingness to give him a max this season.. so, very interested to see what we might do.. whatever it may be, I hope the right player's go and stay. How I feel next season will determine on how everyone is playing together. What improvements, or lack there of we may see.. The same reason ppl think about Toppin not sticking. Could be the exact opposite for Walker.. Also if he doesn't have some ability to be switchable and play some SF.. It could drastically hurt him early and the overall look at his "potential." Especially if he's not even that same "defensive" player that makes great reads.. If that isn't happening at all at the NBA level like it was in college. Along with a bad shot. He may even be the one to get traded earlier instead of later. For the simple fact of not wanting team's to see his potential dip.. While also having Pascal and Obi being looked at as the two main PF's.. I'm just not sure what is out there that would be worth tbe risk for us to trade him early is.. The thing that upsets me the most. Is not getting to see him play at all in the 2nd half of the season.. Sorta feels as if there has to be an underlying reason for that.. and maybe it was his play.. what else could it be.. when you're playing the 2nd pick over your 7th overall pick..?? Needing Defense so bad, while he was "Mr. Defense." 😬🤐 he's a hard worker though and I hope he can show out for us. He had some solid game's early in the season.. Maybe they want to bring him along gradually. 2nd half of the season is much harder.. hard to understand from a development standpoint though.. had he played even some of it.. I'd understand more, but it's as if they completely abandoned him.. Smith too.. I could see them using Jarace as a big trade piece for possibly a more SF type.. or SG even.. idk.

Thanks for explaining how the Pacers can pay Pascal more than other teams and that they can offer him more for 4 years. I like the idea of 4 more than 5, but losing him for nothing would be tough. If we only offer 8 million more over 4 seasons, he might go elsewhere.

Yeah and to think at best he's worth about 23.5mil. I think they made a big move a couple year's early. If we lose Toppin and also can't sign a player that can create/defend. I'm asking for De'Anthony Melton types, Oubre or Caleb Martin. If Pascal isn't willing to work with us on his first year. It looks as if not only won't be able to sign anyone.. Other than maybe a minimum player.. We could lose Toppin and not get to sign another player.. We lost Bruce and Heild for basically nothing. Mathurin returning will be huge. But Pacers need another player to lean on and particularly one that can Defend as well.. I'd rather go all depth if I can't sign anyone else.. I just feel there are smart moves that could be made that are a lot cheaper.. That also make more sense for a young developing team. The time to signed a bigger name player should have been in the next year, or year after next.. Way I've felt personally. With having the #1 Offense.. Why trip so much about D that you don't get OG and make a panick trade.

Pacers should try and at least move up to pick 30. Upper 20's would be great. Mainly because who could still go in that range.. Then the fact that we need to build some way. Won't have the cap and need to make the most of our picks. Less roster room as well.. Despite that, I'd still like to draft a 2nd and 3rd player for the G-League. Depending on how that goes. You could see who we may want to trade. Give a permanent spot to later. There are a lot of Big C's in this draft. If we could get Adem Bona, Missi with the 2nd pick. That would be awesome. Hopefully they could get Jaylon Tyson, Baylor Scheierman, or Bobi Klintman with the 1st.. I like Kolek, the other guard he played with was decent as well, Kam I think.. Didn't look much into PG's. Newton seemed to be a good player. I faintly remember.. Mintz is a later pick too. Doesn't shoot the 3, but a physical player. Loves to drive and draw contact. I know that much about him. He's going to try and draw fouls. TJ never shot many 3's either. Something to keep in mind. If he can give a lot in an attacking type style PG. That could really open up your Offense. Every team needs a guy or two like that. There's another PG before him I'm forgetting that was on a prior mock.. But idk.. Then there's a guy like a Cam Christie at 6'6 who could go later. Potential 2-way play there right off the bat. Guaranteed bucket at 3pt range. Has some scrap to him. Jalen Bridges could be a later pick. Being the only real SF at 6'8 that gives you a more 2 way feel. As he can do a little of everything. Someone may take him sooner too. As guy's get picked off the board. He's built for his size. But you can tell he will eventually fill out more than he is in a few year's. The fact he can move well, shoot the 3 without hesitation. While having enough handle that he can attack the rim a bit if his defender isn't really good. That has some value. He's a guy that later you might wonder why he wasn't drafted higher. He's not someone who blows you away with his play. Yet is well rounded at his size. He had a couple big game's as well. Think one game he had 38. I wouldn't be mad at all if we took him either. Simply because of the SF talent available in Draft and FA. I like like Jaylon Tyson because of his hieght of 6'7, with his shooting ability. He's someone who's already been asked to play some SF. Then was asked to play more of a SG role. Did fairly well in both and shoots with some consistency. That's the most important part. He can hit them off screen's very well, can create a bit, has some handle and can get to the rim off screen's too.. use his floater game. So you can't play him one way. Some 3 level scoring there. Even if it's not at a crazy high level. Anything he can give us with his height, space and pace we play with. While providing some consistency. With some defensive game as well, that holds value. Even if he can give us some Caleb Martin style like play. That's a W, he's a more ready player. I've also grown to be a very big fan of Baylor Scheierman. Mostly do to his incredible shooting, with range, efficiency and the fact he's almost obtainable. Might go at 30. He's not an incredible athlete, yet still has managed to average 9 rebs a game. So there's a high IQ at work here.. As long as he can be a decent defender. Doesn't have tk be great, but decent. Gets those Rebs and can hit big-time shots. Beautiful stroke, range and consistency. You feel each time he lets it go, it's going in.. That's valuable and Pacers need a go to shooter in big moments. Even having him at his size, can reb and give you that off the bench.. That's huge late in a game. Especially coming in the league that way. Even if he is 23.. He avg over 18+ points this year tho. At pick 30 you aren't only looking at potential. You want some more impact now player's if possible lol. That said, with the potential route. I've been liking Bobi Klintman since last year's draft. He's about 6'9, studies Paul George and plays similar to him. His consistency this year was bothersome. I didn't honestly watch any college ball this year really.. But his bag is very deep, the skill, stroke, movement, handle and defensive 2 way play is all there. He can go iso at that size and get to the rim as well. Maybe he was trying to do too much this year. Idk..But if a team could get him. Put him in their system. Get him to play as we want/need him to. Certain amount of touches and proper amount of expectation. Proper coaching, he could develop into a really good player. His defensive potential, size and movement now is off the hook. That alone with his skill and effort/hustle. He's worth taking and for all those reasons. I feel he will be gone around 20 to 23 at the latest. Maybe not, would be awesome if he slips. Not sure how in this draft tho.. But there are so many team's looking for specific player's. I definitely feel this draft in particular will be one based a lot off of need/production vs potential tho.. Because the talent isn't as obviously high in this one. Then the random C's to PG's that could be drafted anywhere. Could make some guy's get boosted, or even fall back about 5 spaces or so. Just a feeling you get with this draft. So anything could happen. I doubt the few higher potential guy's slip much.. It would definitely be helpful for us to get around 30 or high 20's. The picks we had back.. 😐 lol we alright tho.. as long as we make the right moves.. Trade up, ask Pascal to take less the 1st year. We can still offer him a 5th year.. not so important if we can't at least get a good player though.. Not sure that and retaining Obi will happen.. Which is why I've been so ticked off. Because of what these young guy's like Obi/Smith could be, will be in 2 year's from now. No one realizes how hard it would be to go from being a Starter. Then going to the bench either. While Obi's D wasn't as good in the playoffs. It was much better before the playoffs. At time's it seemed like he wasn't loose. Warmed up and as ready as usual. But he's been so consistent and solid throughout. It felt as if he wanted to do what Jackson did a lot at time's. That's a thing with more athletic player's early. They want to jump as a natural reaction. Knowing they can get a huge block/stop if they get it. Yet they have to realize that the other guy's are going to want them to jump. He's been staying on his toes much better on D. Staying ready, but does need to clean it up. He's going to be more of the PF/C type. He's constantly improving with each season tho.. and has done so at a fairly incredible rate. Seeing as he didn't get to play much in NY. Then had what was a solid start I thought. At least Offensively, then right as he started to get better defensively. They had him benched for Siakam.. I couldn't help but get immediately frustrated.. Because we had the #1 Offense in league history.. Something is right there.. Despite what's wrong.. Don't lose sight of what we have Offensively.. I feel like we're doing that and much too fast.. We're losing everything that made us the team we were before All-Star. That can't happen and we need to fix it. Add the defense in.. but don't change stylistically.. We've already done that now tho.. like it or not, but we can retain Obi.. Hopefully draft well, get a FA. Whoever that may be.. Hopefully a good one that can defend and create some offense. Then by next season, maybe we can evaluate what we have. Then even look at some bigger trades. I think Pacers wanted the immediate help obviously.. But I'm sure they're also thinking what can we get later with these contracts. Because our team is so young.. That said, I still think even with how Pascal played. Even if individually he wasn't bad. He still wasn't great and isn't someone that is going to take over a game for you. He's simply not that kind of a max player. He did get thrown in mid-season too. There's a lot of growth that needs to take place and chemistry to ve developed. Getting him in his spots.. But he needs to realize he is the older player.. Play like one for us.. Demand the ball, be someone who wants the ball. To go get a bucket when you have an advantage.. Seems as if there's a communication problem and I'm sure vibes were practically annihilated in some ways.. After the trade, getting Pascal instead of OG.. then Heild traded.. Haliburton's injury, lost Mathurin all together.. Ben Mathurin I felt was about to seriously break out in his game. As he was getting a lot stronger.. Just started to feel himself, then he goes down completely. Next season will be huge for Mathurin and one I'm sure he will come out swinging in. I can't wait to see it and I hope he has all the success in the world.. because we need it, on both ends of the floor. The lack pf shooting has been painful to watch at time's.
