I've been listening and loving these ladies since 1988. Even got close enough to them that Amy took my hand on her way off stage in Portland Maine. Ive seen them so many times I lost count.During a show at one very small venue a mentally handicapped man became disruptive standing up and walking toward the stage calling out to Amy. The staff began to approach him to remove him. Amy stopped singing and defended the man, speaking directly to him telling him thank you for his words, then asking him to sit back down, telling the staff to leave the man alone. Probably one of the best nights of his life. They are true to their lyrics and their hearts. Their music set me free. So much has changed for those of us of the same heart since 1988. I simply love them both, a lifetime favorite and catalyst for change.... Love you ladies...

The song is great, but like most music, it's written from a hazy view of a pipe dream of what the world would be like if everyone acted exactly like you. Don't be misguided by a happy tune, there's no truth here.

@@mollycorkle6628 @mollycorkle6628 If only those dirty devils never went over and messed with the mexican people people to start with. We could live together in harmony with each and every one of us respecting the living human heart extractions that brought prosperity to the land because that's their religion, and who are we to impose? And we would be welcomed in with open loving arms. Must be awful to be realistic? To have historical statistics motivate future decisions? That's the attitude of regretless human empowerment far set apart from anarchistic cults devolution to living as animals and hating the human race as a whole out of one side of the mouth while preaching love and acceptance out of the other.

My friends and I are slowly bringing live music back, and so we've been socially-distancing in our friend's driveway - acoustic guitars, small drum kit, and fretless bass all playing with a great singer we've found. She busted out this song, and I'd never heard it before. At the age of 50, I'm now an Indigo Girls fan...

I also became an Indigo Girls fan during this quarantine! I've been recording a different cover (by lots of different artists) every day to stay sane and sharing the videos with my friends, some of whom are also doing this project. Ignorance. "Mexicans" aren't a race, no more than "Canadians" are a race. You'll find that most people who dislike them do so with very little regard to whatever race they happen to be. If they hear speakin' Spanish, it riles up thar' dander! For the record, I have no fear of people from Mexico and actually like that culture a great deal. Both sides of the issue, though, are dogma-chanting, mindless partisans.

Bigotry against immigrants, and profiling people who appear "different" in some way, have only increased since this song was released. In Butler County, OH, where Sheriff Rick Jones presides, this animosity runs particularly rampant. I have been asked by police if I can speak English, when they had no reason to speak to me otherwise. BTW, I am of Italian descent! Just because a person has dark hair and a tan, doesn't mean they are undocumented. Sheriff Jones needs to stop wasting time pandering to bigots, and work on relevant things, like the opioid epidemic!
