Not to mentions, the rice farming culture of the Javanese that lead to unsustainable food policies that replaced the original diets of the eastern Indonesia region that increased a demand for rice more than it should be, while local farmer break their bone in the the rice field without ever gain more income or even cheaper fertilizers. Instead of addressing the root problem, the government tend to choose short term fix by importing rice from Vietnam and others. Also, I lived in West Java which are the most populated province of Indonesia, but when we travel to Southern West Java, it's still underdeveloped since the Soeharto's regime compared to the northern Java, perhaps it's neglected due to mountainous terrains even though it had fertile soils for tea, coffee, rice, and vegetable farming.

It's disappointing to see the Wall Street Journal's video on Nusantara presenting outdated footage and misleading information. Contrary to the claim that Nusantara threatens the rainforest, it is being built in an industrial forest area, which already poses a risk to the rainforest regardless of the new capital's construction. The development of Nusantara includes significant efforts toward sustainability and environmental protection. Accurate reporting is crucial for an informed discussion on this important project. Also the claim that Nusantara is being built "in the middle of nowhere" is inaccurate. Nusantara is strategically located near Balikpapan and Samarinda, both well-connected by toll roads, with plans to link these to Nusantara. These cities will support the new capital. While it's true that local communities face displacement issues, this is a recurring problem due to government incompetence. Instead of halting the project, we should focus on finding solutions to support local communities. Discussions on forums like Skyscrapercity offer more updated and credible information compared to major media outlets like the Wall Street Journal.

The main reason behind moving Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara is never because of Jakarta's sinking problem. While it's true that it's one of the reason, but it's not the key reason. The key reason is because economic development since our independence has always been only concentrated on Java island. So the moving of capital city will symbolize the moving from a Java-centrist development towards an Indonesian-centrist development. As a native Kalimantan, I really appreciate this move as it'll also bring more and more development to our neglected massive island (3rd largest in the world, as big as the country of Turkey).

Jakarta is overpopulated and overcrowded because people from other parts of Indonesia keep flocking there to get some of the economic crumbs. Why would they bother to do that? Because the economy in their hometown (especially in the rural areas) is not prospering. For example, the farmers in the rural areas are being neglected with lots of imported commodities that decrease the market price. Those farmers then stopped teaching their offspring how to farm and push them to work in other fields. This phenomenon forces them into urbanisation and Jakarta is the right place for that, economically. While this is the problem (of many other problems regarding economic inequality), the government instead chose to build a billion-dollars new capital city which many people see as a solution not solving the core of the problem, right? 🤷 Would the farmers prosper after building a new capital? While it’s true that there’s rumors of the government leaving jkt to escape grass roots movements, the movements in question are Islamist conservative. They are a very destabilizing and have made concerted efforts to exert pressure which far outweighs their popularity. Jokowi's ego project, when with the same amount of money we can develop more cities throughout Indonesia. The strangest thing about this project is that the EIA came out first, and the research was done later. And for your information, the authorities arbitrarily shifted the zero point of the capital that had been researched by McKinsey because they were influenced by the words of a shaman. The failure of this project is the best thing I can hope for.
@indrapratama7668

The whole project is the worst example of a top-down planning. Failure is inherent in a top-down planning like this. At the core, IKN is an artificial city, not an organic one like Jakarta and virtually all cities in Indonesia. It has many things in common with Arab Saudi's The Line. The failure to understand what makes an organic system more robust than an artificial system is the biggest failure in mega projects like this.

Can someone please explain to me how it is environmentally friendly to build a huge city on top of thousands of hills, so that it's residents will pretty much depend on motorised means of transportation, levelling out some of those hill resulting in tons of fuel to be used for landscaping alone, deforesting vast areas and choosing a location which predestines air traffic as the sole method for the rest of the country to get there quickly. It's good that Indonesia starts to de-centralise with this project but stop the greenwashing please.

It’s better to expand your literacy and understanding before making inaccurate comments. Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Specifically, Indonesian Kalimantan has quite advanced and developing industrial areas, as well as rapidly growing cities. Our new capital city is situated between two major cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda. On the other hand, the forested areas are protected and will not be destroyed, as our capital city is built on industrial eucalyptus plantations, not natural forests.
@zzeroemissions3364
Ай бұрын
Once again, our new capital city is designed with the concept of a 'green city,' and not all hills will be flattened, as hills are an integral part of our city’s design. Additionally, it's important to clarify that motor vehicles or subsidized vehicles will not be allowed to pass through the IKN capital city. This is in line with the city’s concept and the presidential regulation prohibiting subsidized vehicles starting from 2030 (or sooner).
@unitedstatesoffugu

@@zzeroemissions3364 Sweetie, why so pressed? You just have to look once at the satellite images to see: Those plantations are also full of palm trees and sometimes, construction did reach into natural forests as well. "Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Specifically, Indonesian Kalimantan has quite advanced and developing industrial areas, as well as rapidly growing cities." First of all, I know of the three countries on Borneo Island. Why do you think I wouldn't know that? Stop that foolishness. It's embarrassing. You've never met me. And would you bring that up anyway? Malaysia or Brunei Darussalam have literally nothing to do with this project, because it is the new Indonesian capital. That's right, Indonesian capital, not theirs. The hills and mountains of Kalimantan were in fact very much forested - until humans decided to cut or burn the natural forests down to make room for plantations or other economic projects. That's a fact. The decrease of natural forested areas on Kalimantan in the recent past are well documented, google it. Good bye. Live your life with your one-sided views :) "and not all hills will be flattened" oh and congratulations for repeating exactly what I said. If you know one thing about constructions, you'd know that moving around soil is an extremely energy consuming division of it. That's also one of the reason why battery-run vehicles aren't necessarily better for our environment as they are depended on components sourced from mining. If you want to have clean means of transportation in cities, you have to implement just three things: pedestrian friendly, cyclists friendly, very good network of public transport. It's actually a very easy recipe. But I doubt that the hills of Nusantara will be inviting to walk or cycle for a few km while communiting to work. But we will see about that.

And please understand that while there are indeed forested areas affected by the construction, these areas are primarily focused on the development of highways, main roads, and other access routes to IKN. Afterward, these areas will be reforested. Any development will have some environmental impact, but that does not mean this project is indifferent to the damage caused. In fact, it is a positive aspect, as the city's concept includes green spaces and reforestation programs mandated by the President. Moreover, any human-made development will inevitably have an impact. If we only look at Kalimantan without considering its own damaged areas due to development, it would be hypocritical. The reality is that human populations are growing, and land is becoming more expensive. Therefore, relocating the capital is the right step to balance the economy across our country with its hundreds of islands separated by oceans. Additionally, Kalimantan, specifically East Kalimantan, is the most suitable central location for the capital, as Java houses 60% of our population and is poorly integrated due to its location across islands. Furthermore, Java is dangerous as it is in the red zone of the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it unsuitable for future human habitation due to rising sea levels, active volcanoes, and declining land surface.

Jealous? It’s not “uncertain” it is certain that this city will be finished at some point, and the target completion of 2045 is still freakin’ long way to go, as we can see the actual condition of what the gov called as phase one is already nearly completed. It may shocked all of you when you see it. It is so true so many other countries are jealous and afraid of what Jokowi’s trying to do and achieve. Why the capital city is moved ? The current capital of Indonesia, is congested and even more worrying, it’s sinking by as much as 25cm a year! About half of the city of more than 30 million people already lies below sea level. But largely because all the economic activity in the country is centered in Jakarta, the current capital, and long term predictions show that if the capital stays there the economic inequality will just continue to get worse. Jakarta started out as an economic hub under the Dutch East Indies Company and two centuries after the company left its still one of the most important economic hubs in Asia. There were attempts to move the political power elsewhere in the 20th century, both by the Dutch and by the independence movement, but it settled in Jakarta anyway. What that means for most of Indonesia’s people is that most of the country’s money settles there which means there’s none for other regions in the country. It is hoped moving the capital will create new economic links in the center of the country. This isn’t the first time a country tried this. Brazil moved its capital from thriving Rio de Janeiro to centrally located Brasilia in the 1960s for the same reason. In fact, most U.S. states rejected their largest city as the capital for much the same reason. That’s why they have Albany, Lansing, Harrisburg, Springfield and Sacramento being the capitals of states with much larger population centers. All of those cities are centrally located within their state. Indianapolis was made the capital of Indiana precisely because it was in the center of the state. So there are several reasons behind this decision: 1. Overpopulation and Congestion 2. Environmental Concerns 3. Economic Development and Regional Balance 4. Administrative Efficiency The decision to move the capital is part of Indonesia's vision for sustainable development and aims to address various challenges faced by the current capital, Jakarta. This is long term projects and result will be reach in next 15 - 20 years. That's why their neighboor "tiny dot island" country - as accomplices or agents of western side, and some of western countries, including their media are really afraid of this project because they've already understand very well that Indonesia will become a major economic power in Southeast Asia, and it will have a big impacts on the economic of "tiny dot island" country, and western interests also in Indonesia. And they are always reporting of this great country and developing of their new capital city in a different perspectives - sceptical & negative news, compared to other asean countries who always support the new capital city of this great great country and the economic growth of Indonesia and Asean. You should be proud Indonesian !

This is how politicians who don't seek experts opinion look like. Everybody who at least have some keenness on urban studies know how hard it is to build a city from scratch and the proof is everywhere in the world (i.e. Naypyidaw). They should really take the nearest, already established city close to the north instead. It's also one of the old cities in Indonesia. Waste of taxpayers money.
