The World Around & Future Observatory at the Design Museum present IN FOCUS:RESEARCH
The first presentation from our debut event in London is now available to watch online! In this video, Indy Johar begins our series with an urgent prognosis: that to transition our economies at the scale the climate crisis demands, we will need to completely rethink the structures that underpin how we live. “We have to get rid of nearly 80% of our energy source, if not more, and replace it,” Johar emphasises. “That is fundamentally a different type of civilization.”
To build that civilization is the radical aim that drives the research Johar leads as director of Dark Matter Labs: a trans-disciplinary practice testing design in service of a more equitable future in the field. Mapping the challenge ahead, Johar asserts the need for a proportionate approach from designers: one that reaches beyond products and buildings, to the global flows of materials and labour they are entangled in. To Johar, these complexities are not a problem to be overcome in the green transition, but a something to be excited by: a vital invitation to imagine the world anew.
Amid a horizon of uncertainties, his presentation is at once a clarion call to action, and a reason for hope: “I think this is one of the most extraordinary moments to live,” says Johar. “An extraordinary moment where I think we're going to be pretty much redesigning everything around us, from the deep code level upwards.”
Change is coming, Johar prophecies: “the only choice will be whether we'll be [its] victims (…), or whether we will be partners, dancers, into this future together.”
His presentation from In Focus: Research-co-presented with Future Observatory at @designmuseum-is essential viewing towards a deep, just green transition. Watch it on The World Around KZitem channel now.
