Listen up: from this point on I will delete any comments which say "Backfeed is fine, I know what I'm doing." Yes, you may know what you're doing, but in a power outage you may not be at your best, someone else might attempt to hook up the generator if you are absent or incapacitated, and there might be water on the floor. I have no tolerance for people who tell me their suicide cords and non-interlocked panels are fine, when the parts to do a proper setup cost far less than you paid for the generator.

I'm not arguing that you shouldn't have an interlock ..... But the risk of back feeding is extremely low. Your generator will basically kick off on overload immediately if you do. There's massive loads on that line just waiting for power because when the power goes out nobody turns their breakers off. If you were to screw up and not shut off your utility your generator simply would immediately die, being unable to power your neighbors air conditioning units all at once. It's a good idea, but the real risk is very very slim of forgetting to close your utility breaker, having a man there working on something with no precautions, and having no other loads on the line that will not cause your tiny generator to kick out

Generator safety rules: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules before using your portable generator. This is only a reminder. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. It is important to keep your children safe especially little ones. The portable generator can be hot during an operation. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Most videos I watch are made by suicidal maniacs, people trying to burn their house down or trying to kill someone thru their ignorance. Not to mention the home brew multi-fuel generator conversion that at best only make piston go up and down with no governed control and at worst have the potential of blowing up and burning down the whole neighborhood! You did a fine job of showing people the right and safe way to preserve themselves their household and comfort without a manslaughter suit! A fine Job! I like that you instilled and had your young apprentice participating in the explanation on safety! Thank you both again!

@jeffcamp481

stefan w It’s not the generator that blows up the neighborhood. It’s when the generator fails or shuts of on low oil, and you don’t have a demand regulator to shut off gas flow. Lip then flood the area, example: an open door or basement window or a semi enclosed area. That trapped gas is explosive and if it build a explosive environment in that enclosed area. When ignited it s expands thousands of time with a big fireball. Blows up a chunk of your house and the heat starts a fire! The poor guy that turned on the lights or lite a cigarette in that area is dead, if you have gas lines in that part of your house and they’re damage from the explosion, then you can have another explosion or a bigger fire! That is why all engineered equipment has safely‘ stop prevent gas from flooding an area of building with gas in the event there is equipment failure! That potential is their why risk it when you can get a demand regulator for 80 bucks. Smart is safe!

As an electrician myself I was thinking of exactly the same thing the only difference is that I have a single phase generator that I was thinking of doing the same thing with but instead of powering everything which the single phase generator can't do, I would pretty much have a sub panel which is single phase just for my refrigerator circuit the essential lights and a few essential receptacles. Your video is the best one out there so far and I have seen plenty. thanks for sharing.

220 is single phase Mr. Electrician.
@ig_foobar

There is no such thing as 220 in North America. 240 volts in North America is delivered as what we call "split single phase" which allows 120 volts to be delivered by connecting to a center-tapped secondary on the transformer. Anyway, it's pretty clear that Higgout is indicating that his generator provides a 120 volt single phase supply.
@xXTECHxKNIGHTXx

The following applies to North American electrical systems.... Two phase is not the correct terminology and sometimes, the terms "split phase" or "split leg" is used. The 220 power that we are familiar with is what comes into our home service panels and it consists of one neutral and two "hot wires". Somewhere in the neighborhood, there is a transformer with high voltage coming into it. They put a winding next to the core and it induces 220 volts into the winding. The two wires from that winding are the two hot wires that enter your house. If you measure the voltage between those two hot wires, it will read 220 volts. In the middle of that winding, they put a "center-tap" which is just a wire that connect to the center of the winding. That wire is the neutral that is brought into your house. If you measure between the neutral wire and any hot wire, the voltage is 110 but, one with respect to the other is 180[SUP]o[/SUP] out of phase. Without a significant description of phasor mathematics and something called "complex numbers", it would be very hard for me to describe in other terms why the phase change occurs but, suffice it to say, it does indeed occur. BTW, the terms 110, 120, 220 and 240 are a little confusing. 110 and 120 are the same really; it's just that the power company is allowed to vary the voltage under different circumstances and it could be somewhere in that range. The frequency (60 Hz in North America) will not change and if it ever does, there are serious, serious problems going on in at the generation facility -to the extent you will probably see a bright flash coming from the facility. -Basically, it does not vary and if it does, it happens simultaneously all through North America. The entire system is synchronized. Standard USA voltages have increased with the decades and so has a Coke Cola too. ie 100/200, 110/220, 115/230, 120/240,125/250 . On a hot day in a rural area by barn's voltage is really about 110 hot to neutral and 220 hot to hot. Gobs of folks have AC units on and one's voltage is lower than normal. At my Business in the city the voltage is never as low as 120/240, more like 124/248 even on a hot day. At night it is 125 to 126 for the "120 volts" and 250 to 252 for the "240" volts

Good to see a responsible treatment of this subject. I cannot believe how many KZitemrs rely on remembering to turn the main breakers off before turning the gen breakers on. A danger of this method you didn't mention is that the step-down transformers on the power poles are just as happy to step your 240v up to the distribution voltage which may be 12kv or so. Linemen out repairing sections they think are shut off could be killed by an errant homeowner who forgot to "do it right". There's going to be maybe 1/2 amp behind that 12kv, but it takes much less to stop your heart and 12kv will make sure that 1/2 amp gets there.

Here are the portable generator safety rules: make sure you are aware of all the warnings before using portable generators. This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. All generator safety rules should be followed carefully. This advice is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Nicely done. I am a retired broadcast engineer with experience dealing with remote mobile power systems, and am confident with my abilities. I live in an isolated frontier area in the Rockies at 9,000 feet with a year round population of 800. We are so "Frontier" the county has not adopted building codes. During the winter, temps can get to -30F for a few days at a time. My house depends on AC power for water pumping as well as the regular uses. I like the way you isolated vital circuits in the sub-panel, and the simplicity of the Qo2Dti interlock. I ordered the interlock, cable and inlet box off of Amazon for about $130, and will install upon arrival. I have the rest of the components and generator, so should be up in a week or so. Thanks.

I'd like to point out that when it's time to shut down your generator to take loads off first, then shut it down. If you shut down under a load, the regulator in the generator will put more and more current in the rotor trying to compensate for the motor slowing down. This will shorten the life of the alternator.

That's it on a conventional generator. Does not apply to an inverter generator or a twin Inveter such as Honda. I agree with you on the conventional generator, but the among conventional gens on the market, Hondas are designed to take abuse. Fuel is cut to the carb immeadiatly shutting it down quickly under this scenario. But you are correct drop the load no matter what the gen is as it's good practice. Turn auto throttle off if it's so equipped.

But isn't that what a transfer switch on a whole house generator like a Generac does? Starts the generator and then transfers the whole house load? Then transfers the whole load all at once back to commercial power when it is restored?

Well done. I am an IT guy now (systems admin) but I spent 12 years as a professional electrician. When I first saw this video title I was worried - but you covered the "DO NOT DO THIS" stuff perfectly. The only disadvantage to this is that some people (my wife) would have a hard time learning to do this in the proper order if I wasn't home - plug in cable, turn off generator load, turn on generator, turn on generator breaker(s), turn off sub panel branch circuit breakers, turn off sub panel main, turn on sub panel generator main, turn on sub panel branch circuits... I'd have to write easy instructions and draw pictures. lol Still well done and explained. Thanks for the video!

viopsadmin Thanks for the kind words. I agree that it can be a bit overwhelming to understand all of the required steps, which is *exactly* the reason we need safety interlocks. People who say "bah, I don't need that, I know what I'm doing" don't take into consideration that the day *will* come when another member of the household attempts to get the generator started, misses steps and/or gets them out of order ... and then they either get themselves or a lineman killed, or at the very least destroy the generator. With a proper interlock and inlet receptacle, the worst that can happen is they trip the breaker on the generator. I am an IT professional as well, an infrastructure architect. A lot of my knowledge of electrical systems is based on what we do in large data centers.

I connected my generator to my clothes dryer outlet (back-fed) as you suggested. The dryer outlet caught fire causing the gas water heater to explode, blowing the whole house up. Luckily, after the entire home was demolished by the huge fireball explosion, the only family member missing is my mother in law. The search and rescue people said she was blown up and landed two or three counties away and that is out of their jurisdiction. Where ever she is, I'm sure she is OK because she is pretty hard headed. Great video!

Don’t forget about the generator safety tips as well. Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your generator. Remember that portable generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Here are the generator safety tips: This is just a safety reminder 1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3) 🔥generators cause fire hazards too. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) generator operation; make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzitem.info/news/bejne/qmegumd3h3d_qX4 and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps

That’s why generator safety rules are required to be followed carefully. Here are the generator safety instructions: Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. There is a hierarchy in safe generator circuitry design: Rule 1 there MUST be an interlock switch. Rule 2 there must be a LEGAL feed connector with a plug that never exposes hot metal prongs. Now you are safe. Now you can get (safely) creative in selecting which circuits receive generator power and which ones do not (in order to use a less expensive, smaller generator). Now everything sits around for a year or 2. Then suddenly there is a power outage and you will have FORGOTTEN the cleverly thought out (but not so safe) scheme that you devised "back then" for connecting your generator and there will be a problem, UNLESS you stick with the SAFETY scheme .

You can source a used transfer switch relatively cheap, an option that was not discussed. Look at the resale shops of any demolition contractor. A few corrections and/or omissions in this video I would like to correct. I am not quite sure why you say in the case of the suicide cord, you have no circuit protection in front of the cord, the generator after all does have a breaker. But yeah, suicide cords are for the ignorant, you should never have live power to the male ends of an extension cord. But the main safety reason for the transfer switch or interlock kit, is to insure that the main breaker cannot be on when you are back-feeding via gen power. The reason for this (should you forget to turn off the main) is your not only making the wiring in your house live, but your back-feeding to the entire neighborhood. This makes it even more dangerous for the poor utility worker that is trying to restore power.

Well done Art... There is a ton of misinformation out there & glad to see you emphasized the safe, correct & legal procedure for hooking up a portable to the house. I realize you published this 5 years ago, but it still applies today! I too have gone this route as I have just last night in fact installed a GenInterlock Kit on my older 200 amp GE main breaker panel. Works exactly as designed. when the MAINS are on, GENERATOR circuit breaker is OFF & vise versa... A few days back I relocated two CB on the upper left down to the bottom. I installed a 30 amp GE double pole CB in there place & wired up 10-3 Romex to code & out to a Reliance 30 amp power inlet box beneath my front steps. [ 6 feet above ground ] All that is required is a generator & a power cord, none of which is currently available in a 100 mile radius here in northern New England. Demand has far out stripped supply currently. I have my eye on the Champion 9375/7500 gasoline - 8400/6750 LPG unit. This unit produces 31.25 amps @ 240 volts. Should work fine for my selected essentials... Thanks for putting this out there. Bill Farr...

Boy am I glad you mentioned about the dryer connection as a suicidal plug...for a minute, I was wondering if you were going to say using a dryer outlet would power up the house, but being said, dryers use a 30 amp 10 gauge wire, and 10 gauge is too small. Good info though, I have a sub panel also and it is for the generator use only, but I have a back up for accidential back feeding...a pull bus bar box running off the generator feed on the way to the sub panel.

Actually the generator inlet shown in this video is on 10 gauge wire, and enters the panel on an interlocked 30 amp breaker. :) It was enough for *my* generator, which maxes out at 6,500 watts, and has a 30 amp breaker on its own. If I had the 10,000 watt model, I'd need bigger wire, bigger breakers, and a bigger receptacle. I like your pull bus idea, and am guessing the removable section has fuses in it too. Thanks for watching the video and for commenting!

10 gauge is too small for what? There is a breaker in the drier circuit which will limit the current flow to 30 amps from the generator. The generator also has a breaker of probably 30 amps too. It doesn't matter which way current flows through a breaker and anyway, AC flows in both directions.

Good deal of essential info. I used to run the electrical dept in the local chain home improvement warehouse. People were always telling me about the dryer outlet trick. I always tried to relay how dangerous it was. Especially to potential lineman working on the powerlines. Plenty got mad and tried would say " i being doing it for years and never had an issue". They'd assume i was just trying to sell em our expensive switchover box. Wrong! Especially the older generations. The turning on one breaker at a time was a good idea as well. Might be worth mentioning as well generators shouldn't be run near the house either . Due to carbon monoxide poisoning. In fact having battery operated carbon monoxide detectors would be valuable essential safety equipment as well. Thanks again PS: hook up a ground wire to generator. When in doubt about anything consult a licensed electrician. Its vital!

Great video. I have a newer house with a large panel and a 4kw gas generator and I'm planning to add the main panel interlock. One advantage of this approach is that you can run any of the circuits (not all of course) so it's more flexible. What you did is a great solution when your panel is too small.

Agreed. Let the pre-existing layout of the home's electric service be a guide to what kind of solution is implemented. I had that little 16-breaker panel so the sub was a no brainer. I've since moved into a larger home with an outdoor 200 amp disconnect that looks like it could be replaced with a transfer panel.

Great video! This is one of the few examples of videos I have found with somebody actually telling you the correct way to back feed. There are so many videos on youtube showing the "cheap" or "easy" way to back feed where they almost always use a suicide cord and or do not have the mechanical interlock. The one thing that you should add though is to talk about floating vs bonded neutrals on the generator and the importance of it. Most of the non-inverter portable generators are of the bonded neutral type (at least that I have seen) which would still violate NEC code when plugged into your otherwise completely legal setup. If you plug a bonded neutral generator into this setup there would be current coming back on your ground and neutral wires instead of just the neutral as it should.

Glad you show to use an interlock device to be NEC compliant. I didn't notice if you mentioned bonding between the neutral and the ground. With a hot-only switched system like you show, the neutral and ground remain bonded together at the main panel. If the generator also has the ground bonded to the neutral this causes the ground and neutral to be connected at two locations, and you will in effect be wiring those two in parallel and sending current not only on the neutral, but also the ground wire. This is not NEC compliant and your GFCI outlets will likely not work. If this happens, you will need to remove the bonding jumper in the generator. Just remember, if you use your generator with extension cords rather than connecting to your house, you will need to replace the bonding jumper or insert a bonding plug that connects the generator's neutral and ground.
@derekparent752
Жыл бұрын
If I am correct this is dependent on the Generator itself as to how to legally bond the neutral wire in the transfer panel/switch. If the generator has a neutral bonded to ground it must also have a bonded ground wire to a ground rod near it’s location. With this there also must be a 3 pole transfer mechanism that will isolate the 2 hots and 1 neutral from the supply authority(Hydro Company) making the generator breaker panel completely isolated from the the main panel when in generator mode. Think that’s correct.

@@derekparent752 On my Westinghouse 7500DF manual it shows how to remove the internal jumper between the neutral and ground. This is what I did because I am using an interlocked isolation 220 circuit breaker rather than a real transfer switch and my neutral and ground are bonded at the main box. When I use the generator without connecting to my house, I have an L14-30P plug with the ground and neutral wired together that I plug into the generator outlet to bond the neutral and ground at the generator. Without the neutral and ground bonded somewhere, the GFCIs won't reset.

@@markfabre7682 interesting way to resolve the standalone generator using a jumper inside the L14-30P but I will take a guess and say this is against code. The issue I find with all these DIY videos is that no one really details the neutral issue regarding Floating and bonded. Likely because it is complicated to explain. Thanks for the reply, be safe.

No you do not need to connect the generator's neutral and ground if you're using extension cords. Unless you have GFCI outlets on the generator then it probably has that neutral and ground bonded. Generators without GFCI may have a floating neutral. You should look in your manual and know if you have a floating neutral or a bonded neutral on your generator. Then you need to know if your house connection is set up for a separately derived or a non separately derived system. It must be labeled as such at the outlet. If your generator is bonded then it should be grounded at the generator and the neutral should be switched along with the hot wires, you have what's called a separately derived system. If the neutral is floating then your neutral and ground is not switched it's wired independently through the plug Only bonded at the panel . It is unfortunate but there are electricians that don't even understand this stuff, seriously. There's much professional work done out there that's not to code. My area requires any electrical work to get a permit. After talking to two electricians both told me they never get permits unless they have to pull the meter.... Which is in direct violation of local ordinances. The problem is once you get a permit there's a record, and you're supposed to bring things up to current codes when you do anything that infringe is on part of a system . This adds additional expense and then people don't want to do the work and the electrician doesn't get the job. A good example is they used to allow number 2 AWG for 100 amp service, now they don't anymore. If you want to put in a transfer switch to switch your hundred amp garage panel and it's wired up with number 2 from 30 years ago.... A real electrician might actually have to upgrade that wiring to number 1....
@derekparent752

@@duskyman1 it is definitely a problem regarding the permit issues. As a company owner I was compelled to always get the appropriate permits for all our work as insurance and liability come into play in such regards. As for none compliant work here is an example of why the system can fail the real beneficiary of inspections and quality. In Canada it is required to have work involving 220v inspected, so a senior finds her stove not working, $150 service call from manufacturer says it’s not the stove but the electrical. Electrician comes in, checks stove receptacle, and replaces it. Takes out permit for inspection. $150 for the electrical company, $100 for Electrical Safety Authority. At this point many contractors insist on being there when it’s inspected, another $150 for the electrical company. So now we are at $550 to replace a $5.43 50a Range Receptacle. Because that’s the Legal way to do it. We are failing our customers without a doubt doing this, and that is why you here all the stories of people getting unqualified workers to do stuff now.

For those that can't use an interlock and don't want to spend $$$ to install a transfer panel, there is another legal way for less than half the money. Have your electrician install a 3 way 200 amp service switch. It will connect EITHER your main or gen power. You'll still have to open your high amp loads manually (dryer, hot water heater, hvac, etc.) to prevent your genset from overloading. but the danger of backfeeding into someone else's house is gone. it also provides an emergency disconnect for those older services that feature multiple mains. Use a weather resistant enclosure if outdoors, they also are lockable. They are required in the South Florida Building Code for new installations. IBEW LU #349, retired

I would like to add that many homes are setup for either natural gas or 220V 30 amp dryers. In my case I have both, and have a natural gas dryer (which connects to a 120v outlet). So my 30 amp dryer outlet was doing nothing. So, using existing wiring, I replaced the dryer outlet plug with an inlet plug like the one you installed on the outside of the house. Then I installed an interlock kit, which is really easy, that insures I cannot have the breaker to the inlet and the main breaker live at the same time. Easy peasy.

The issue with backfeeding from a dryer outlet is as pointed out by the original poster of the video it requires a double male cord. The other main issue is that I have seen some dryers use 10 gauge wire to the panel and depending on the length of the run to the panel, a generator could overload these wires and cause a fire. I have 8 gauge wire running from the generator into the main panel for a 3500W generator. I typically err on the cautious side. My 3500W generator will run all the lights in my 2300 SQft house, TV's Ceiling fans, computers, refrigerator and then I can manage the load by running a hairdryer (wife) or microwave. We have a gas fireplace for the winter and ceiling fans for the summer if we need it. All the lights on, fridge with compressor running, TV's and computers runs about 11 amps. Microwave will take that to 22 amps. Most people are really surprised at how small of a generator you need to run a lot of things. In the interest of full disclosure all my lights are LED which uses far less power than incandescent bulbs. Video is well done. My panel is labeled with red, green and yellow dots so we easily can ID circuits we need off during a power outage and required ones and the yellow is for things like the washer or dishwasher and disposal which we may or may not need.

I am glad to see it being done safely for a change as there are so very many "how to" videos that advise the deadly cord and drier plug ! Anyone who wants to save a few dollars for the sake of safety and go for the suicide cord thinking it will never happen to them should also be mindful that if they do kill or injure someone, burn down the house or damage the generator they will get zippo, nadda and nothing from the insurance company. Plugging a generator into the drier socket will invalidate any home insurance they may have and we all know what little excuse they need not to pay !

That person wants to get the boiler and lights on as fast as possible. They do not care about the regulations. Sadly it is at times like this that people get badly injured or killed :-( This is why it is always wise to be prepared and try to cover any eventuality. Not easy as today's pace of life is crazy and most people do not have time to breathe let alone sit down and think out all the possible events or situations that could occur. I am sure that is why these disaster "Prepping" type companies are popping up and making so much money. Some of the conventions for this business are huge and millions of dollars change hands. It is big business these days. It does seem rather sad that someone could survive a flood, hurricane or any other natural or man made disaster and then kill themselves trying to repair the damage or incorrectly hooking up a generator. I would not be at all surprised if a large percentage of injuries and deaths take place after the actual disaster happens. Very sad !

When you were talking about the illegal drier outlet hookup, you failed to mention that if you forget to flip the main breaker before plugging in the suicide cord you might kill a utility worker.
@azopene

Injuring a utility worker is a very dangerous situation with a drier outlet connection. People will inevitably forget to pull the main house breaker to isolate the house from the incoming power lines. The drier outlet however, is breaker protected and so is the generator so no more current can flow through the house than what is allowed by the redundant breakers. It doesn't matter which way current flows through a breaker, they work regardless. AC flows both ways anyway.

@@azopene How can a generator of that size power the neighborhood? All connections would represent parallel loads and these portable generators would instantly pop a breaker, bog down or just fail should the main breaker not be opened. Why would people inevitably forget the main breaker? If they are that ignorant about electricity they shouldn't even own a generator.

At the very least an generator interlock will prevent the main and the gen feed from being on at the same time. ⚠️ Portable Generator safety rules: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules before using your portable generator. This is only a reminder for safety. These idiots who endanger themselves and others with the suicide cords are aggravating. For the sake of the laymen viewers, I get why you say the dryer outlet wiring isn't designed to carry power backwards to panel, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is the suicide cord prongs and the gauge,length and load of any of the wiring. But the average person doesn't get that stuff. The panel was less than $200 + additional breakers. Too many are scaring people away from using generators safely by making them think that proper transfer switches cost several hundred dollars.

The NEC allows up to SIX panels. Ok, you added one to your main because you said there weren't enough spaces in the main panel. You could have used an interlock kit on your main panel (which also feeds your sub panel via a 60-amp breaker) and moved a few circuits to the new panel to accommodate the new generator breaker in the main panel. Your emergency generator would then cover ALL your circuits, not just one panel or a select few circuits. When setting up your loads in the panels it's important to balance them. Meaning, don't put all your 115-volt loads on one leg. Use a tong meter to make the best use of the few watts your generator produces. A 5,000 watt generator will NOT produce 5,000 watts on one leg. It will only produce TWO 2,500 watt legs. Please emphasize that overload protection (breakers or fuses) are there to protect THE WIRE. That means, whatever size breakers are on your generator MUST be covered by correctly sized wire between your generator and your service panel. Some jurisdictions (like Dearborn, MI) will not allow aluminum anywhere in the city, so now we're only considering copper wire sizes. If your generator is more than 60 feet away from the service panel, bump the wire size UP. Why? Because (current squared times resistance) the voltage will drop drastically as current nears the maximum amperage of the wire. Yes, I am an Electrician. BTW, Square-D QO breakers are the finest on the market.

Actually, the NEC only limits you to six operations of the hand (usually the main in each of six panels all connected to the incoming service line). There is no limit to the number of sub panels (i.e., panels fed by a breaker in the main panel) you have because shutting off the main panel shuts them off too. If you're going to install a sub panel, I'd just move enough circuits over to it to free up enough space in the main panel to allow for the generator breaker to go there, then buy an interlock kit for the main panel. This is not a problem for a relatively new main panel, but an interlock kit for old panels may be hard to find, although there are generic kits available. My son has a 200-amp GE panel with plenty of space and the GE interlock kit was easy to install if you're handy. It did require drilling a few holes. In my house, also GE but before interlock kits were available, I used a 100-amp manual transfer switch I picked up on E-bay for $100.00 and moved critical circuits to a sub panel fed by the transfer switch. The normal feed is a 50-amp feed from the main panel, back up is from the generator. It's true, a new transfer switch would cost about $700.00 (hard to believe). I also put a 30-amp fused disconnect in the generator circuit. A friend of my son's asked me to run a 30-amp circuit to a dryer outlet located outside his house to enable him to use a suicide cord to feed the house, and with no interlock. I flatly refused to do so. It's illegal and dangerous, and you could kill someone. Back-feeding 120-volts to the utility company could back-energize the utility distribution transformer and thus back-feed the voltage system. I've seen it happen. Fortunately, we heard a generating running and had it shut down after we saw how it was hooked up.

Good info but the big point you're not making about the 'Widow-Maker' power cord (we call them in the UK) is that if they are fitted without the interlock, and the house occupier forgets to isolate the power, then it's possible to back-feed the entire street. Worse still, if the back fed power goes back through a transformer, it's possible to step up the voltage to many thousands of volts and then electrocuting the unsuspecting electrician who is trying to fix a problem on a circuit he thinks he has isolated and is 'dead'. Either way, creating a lethal situation. Dryer leads are uncommon in the UK as we historically have very few power outages - thank goodness.

I've been using a DIY connection to an outside generator(s), and now a new one, for a very long time. My home was wired with an outside main breaker, and so there is no main breaker on the panel. No way to hook up the so-called interlocks, so I just have to remember to open the main breaker , before closing my 30 amp double that my generator is connected to on panel. This separate panel looks quite difficult and expensive. I have often wondered if there is any easier way to ensure the outside main is open, even though I have never forgotten to turn it off ,and always have a female "cap" on the plug of the generator cord when not in use...

One way that is not very expensive "If you know a friendly electrician" is to use a contactor that has the coil powered by the generator 12v outlet that most genny's have. This way the supply will switch over isolating the utility feed while the generator is running. This is like a cut down version of an automatic transfer but a lot cheaper to put in.

Yes, but if you forget to open your main, your genset will backfeed into the grid. Forget the lineman, he knows to protect his ass from an idiot. Concern yourself with the fact that you may have just reenergized your neighbors house. I hope he is a lineman too! Check out "electrical interlock" these are NEC approved (when used in the approved enclosure) mechanical switches.They simply prevent both breakers from being closed at the same time. You may be able to make such an 'either/or' device yourself. It's just to keep you from forgetting, and hurting someone else.

A sub panel or a generator panel would be the way to go or a manual switch on the out/inside of your house with the big red handle. Great points about doing things safely and not back feeding outlets with live plugs! Hard to believe people are that foolish! I am an electrician by trade and I worked for a City that had the stupidest electrical maintenance manager you can imagine ....I could not make him understand how WRONG ...his 480v emergency generator set up for the sewer lift stations throughout the city....(I think there was 15 to 20 lift stations throughout the city) ... before I hired on they had installed a 100amp RECEPTACLE at each station location connected to a transfer switch ...that's right the big 3 phase generator on a trailer had it's big cord with a MALE PLUG! Talk about suicide setup! It was often raining and in the wee hours of the night when the generator was needed and all it would have taken is one ignorant worker to grab the plug with the power on ...my boss dismissed my complaint and said "Oh no one would ever do that dont be silly" ...well I needed to keep my job so I never blew the whistle too loud but I did warn everyone that might ever be involved to be careful cause an IDIOT had wired it all backwards! But as to a home personally I say IF and only IF a person is knowledgeable enough one can easily get away with powering the home's entire panel rather than creating a more limited new sub panel ....Because EVEN THOUGH a generator being connected might be insufficient to power whatever random things might otherwise be used ...see now I KNOW my generator is undersized to handle loads like my Air Conditioner and so when I am on the generator I simply turn off all the breakers on non essential loads...The main things I want powered is my fridge and freezer and a few lights plus intermittent use of the microwave...we have a 2 hp water pump also that leave off in power outages unless really needed ...if it is then my wife and I understand we cant run other large load items while it is in use for a shower or dish washing. I consider it simple and easy not to abuse my undersized generator. Now I COULD buy a full scale truly capable "whole house" system but that is a huge expense for a few days per year we need a generator ...the fuel costs alone are crazy just having a large engine running full time just in case we want to run multiple high draw items at the same time? My 9kw generator is actually overkill for what we could get by with...heck i don't HAVE to even run my fridge and freezer at the same time much less several other luxury loads ...but it's nice having everything we actually want to use available to use (other than the A/C that is)....I might even buy a small portable A/C unit so that if it is really hot we COULD have one cool room to retreat to....then we would have it all really.
@dougiequick1
6 жыл бұрын
BTW worse case scenario (using a quality legit generator), EVEN if it is undersized for the load some idiot decides to heap on it? Worse case scenario is heavy wear and tear on the generator and maybe a breaker trips ...heck there a lots of homes that COULD easily overwhelm the main circuit breaker if someone had everything running all at once, plugged in several space heaters etc ...that's why we have BRAINS and circuit breakers! ...Heck lots of condos only have a 50 amp service! A micro wave can pull 15, add a coffee maker, a toaster oven, a space heater or two and other junk a family might have going and it is easy to envision overwhelming the main breaker ANYWAY.... An undersized generator is like that ...you have to THINK and not try to use things at the same time is all...it's just simple math this item pulls this many amps this one this many etc and it cant go over X number of amps...easy peasy
