Cole summed it up: Bertrand had a superiority complex and thought his conduit power would fulfill Kessler's prophecy to defeat the Beast AND be the shining soldier of God. But when his power was revealed to be the ability to become an Abomination it turned to jealousy against those with 'better' powers for lack of a better term. It's a if I can't then nobody can. I just know that if Bertrand got another less demon like power he wouldn't even think about conduit genocide

My greatest issue with Infamous 2 is that they spend FAR too much time on Bertrand, at the expense of The Beast, and the other Conduits. After you defeat him, then the plot shifts back to "Oh right we have to deal with The Beast". The unnatural pause put on The Beast to deal with Bertrand makes no sense. There's too much dialogue between Cole and Bertrand, than John/The Beast and Cole.
@thunderstruck6022

I know you commented a year ago but I thought I’d still respond. I agree they should of put more emphasis on the beast. In fact the transition back to the beast arc after this mission was a little awkward but bertand was a great villain. Maybe not as good as Kessler but nobody was really gonna top that. Maybe if they made a trilogy where the beast shows up in infamous 3? Just speculating but they could of kept all of infamous 2 story just exclude the beast and in infamous 3 the beast is the one and only villain. They even could of had a faction of conduits who got there powers from the beast and they were trying to stop Cole.

@@thunderstruck6022 Not really a copy, she more like his polar opposite. Bertrand wanted to destroy all conduits to justify his self-hatred for being denied the powers and heroic destiny as a messianic conduit he thought he deserved when he got those mutation powers. Augustine pretended to be an Anti-Conduit Conduit leader of an task force of Conduit hunters who wanted to lock up all conduits to 'protect' them from human persecution...even though she was truthfully just full of shit and didn't know the meaning of the word "Sancturary" with her Prison 42 style prison where they are locked up forever in cells and even experimented on. Genosha and the X-Mansion Curdun Cay is definitely not. I'd rather have taken my chances with humanity than take her 'protection' if i was a conduit. I really hate the cultish ones. Now obviously, Joseph is not representative of the whole of Christianity. Lots of Christians can attest to that, but I'm hardly religious and even I know he's a rare kind of asshole. "Oh, I finally get it; you thought the Ray Sphere was gonna turn you into some sort of shiny superhuman, but instead it turned you into a fifty foot maggot." Indeed, he caused many to die just so that he could be stronger than the common people, but the only reason he changed his ways was because he was disgusted with what he looked like. Look, Cole was tricked into turning into a superhuman at the expense of hundreds, and if you're following the good path, he uses that power to help the people. Joseph actively caused the death of people he judged as rotten, which there's a good chance some of them were mostly innocent, and became rotten himself. "Conduits aren't monsters. No, see, powers don't kill people. Oh no; it's the person behind the powers that kill people." Not that the good version of Cole experienced the following firsthand, but a Conduit's personality does affect what direction your powers go as they evolve. Taking the easy route at the expense of many will make them more chaotic. Perhaps if Joseph didn't use his perceived generosity as an excuse to kill and instead try to find a way to somehow help others using this power, take personal accountability for his actions, or maybe just forego that power if it really does turn you into a mindless beast, there's a good chance he'd be a bit sympathetic, but that was not the game's intentions. Not that I disapprove of him being unsympathetic, but it's quite impressive that despite his charity and belief in his cause, even the game acknowledged him as wrong. Infamous really knew how to treat their villains, and that's a sign of a great story for me.

@@rattlesnakejake956 How is he a hypocrite? He says that conduits are monsters, and can you not agree? What conduits have we met before? Sasha was a manipulative psychopath pumping poison into the populace. The conduits under her command are bloodthirsty drug dealers, murderers and rapists. Alden was a bitter, self centered old man tearing anyone and everything apart to achieve his goals. The conduits under his command are vengeful and spiteful social pariahs and homeless men. Kessler was an older version of Cole responsible for the death of who knows how many innocents by allowing the early creation, and use, of the ray sphere- all in order to destroy The Beast, an incredibly powerful *conduit.* Then there's Betrand, a conduit who's power is to turn into, and create- biological and mindless homicidal monsters that look like necromorphs. And Nix? A borderline insane pyromaniac who tries to keep said monsters as pets. The plague? Caused by the ray sphere, which is used for creating conduits. And Cole, the protagonist? It's not like we've never seen him murder countless innocents before. Both games go into detail about the possibility of him turning into a completely evil and belligerent homicidal maniac who plows through crowds with shock grenades. The world would be better if conduits just never existed.

@@cynabrum That is an extremely pessimistic and flawed viewpoint to have. Not all Conduits are monsters; they're just people like everyone else. Cole MacGrath and Delsin Rowe can go out of their way to protect people at the cost of bodily harm or even death, and Abigail Walker while a vigilante still goes out of her way to protect innocents by killing only criminals. And Bertrand is a hypocrite because for all his "Conduits are demons" talk, he seems to wipe out every one of them except for himself. He and his Militia also repeatedly persecute their "fellow" humans in New Marais, as shown by the cutscenes with Nix's family, Lucy Kuo and the creation of the Corrupted. @@rattlesnakejake956 Longer term goals over short term. If you want to end the human race, causing nuclear warfare is a lot more efficient alternative than comitting suicide. Bertrand is looking towards the future. Make everyone absolutely despise conduits, and soon they will be exterminated whenever spotted. Won't exactly erase their existence, but will make sure that they are instantly villanized and killed before they can actually villanize. A preemptive measure- 90% chance to be completely evil and 10% to not be, better to just never take the risk in the first place. Would have been even better to have just never built a damn Ray Sphere. And let's be real, the good guy with superpowers is a myth. Excessive power given to anyone or anything is always going to end up terribly. Bertrand, Sasha, Alden, Cole. What is more realistic? Cole at the beginning of Infamous, zapping crooks and saving lives- or using just enough of his power to get what he wants, when he wants? And those little evils building up until he ends up becoming ruthless and sadistic? Doesn't really matter though. In the end of the second game, either all of the conduits die, or conduits wage a genocidal war on humanity and end up proving my point. Win Win.
