I can’t believe I am addicted to the Hoof GP. I live in a city and only see cows in a field when I drive to the country. )Which is rare). The fact that you point out a different school of trimming and how you incorporate aspects of it...so cool. Being open to other ways of doing something means you're also open to learning if a better method is developed. That's a good attitude for any profession. As for not cutting into live tissue, yes he avoids it. There's a lot more that goes into a surgical procedure like that than just a scalpel. The cool thing is with proper hoof trimming, a lot of these cows and bulls get to avoid getting to the point they need a vet.

Highly recommend checking out Pete Ramey articles and videos for getting some good background on equine hoof trimming. Vets have very variable knowledge and often just recommend a 'master farrier' but especially with navicular horses the worst thing for an unhealthy hoof is often a metal shoe. Many other trimmers are frankly butchers on KZitem as well. If I could find an equine vet with great equine podiatry knowledge and who knew what DSLD was, I would be forever on their books and they would get cake, coffee, wine etc every call out.

I was just going to make a comment about you not wearing eye protection when you mentioned it. :) You will eventually get a big piece of hoof in your eye and from then on you will wear safety glasses. I just hope it doesn't do major damage to your eye. I've noticed that farmers in general, and Europeans in particular don't take safety very seriously. We Americans have possibly gone too far in the other direction. The last company I worked for had a policy that we always had to wear safety glasses in "the lab." I was a software engineer and the lab I worked in had nothing but computers. I asked them if they were afraid that we would get data bits in our eyes. :)

Having had an eye injury at work I always notice when other people wear or don't wear eye protection. The flip down visor is probably the best choice for this job, but it wouldn't hurt to invest in some safety glasses that can hang out in the tool cubbies in both crushes. There are several brands out there that have a light mirror tint that are great in lower light situations and very comfortable. Buy a case, put a dozen in each crush, replace as needed. That way you have back up if something happens to the visors. Also available in sizes that would fit the kids so they could get in closer to learn the trade!

LOL, I get it, I have the same when he keeps mentioning 'the Dutch method'. Especially if you know that usually anything "dutch something" is generally not a very positive thing in the UK /english language (dutch courage: the false courage you only feel when drunk on alcohol etc.etc.). We have a long long history of interesting battles so it is understandable why it came to be part of the language (we both have some interesting, unflattering expressions regarding the French and Germans as well). I think the Kansas method is really practical and based on keen observation, kind of what you would expect from your knack of the woods. :)
@sam-spooniesoaps-8382

As someone that lives in Kansas I can understand why a trimmer would create a method centered around the pith because our climate is so dry most of the year. Definitely loads drier then in Scotland although we’re currently in a drought so it’s worse then usual. We finally got a decent amount of rain for the first time this year, but it came with tornados which I could do without.
@wandasetzer1469
2 жыл бұрын
I've been watching Ryan Hall on KZitem. He does live streams when there is a chance for many tornadoes and stays in touch with storm chasers. Also he does education far in advance on what causes the storms that are coming, or when they aren't. He is way better than a TV weather report. His chasers can tell you where the tornadoes are touching down - or in winter, he'd tell us when it was time to buy milk and bread.

One thought of use to me every time I see you trim a bull’s hooves. Too many gender deniers love to say gender isn’t real. I see roosters referred to hens so as to not “insult” the rooster’s feminist. But a couple of times now I have seen bulls referred to as cows so as to not offend the bull. … yes I’m serious lol. One time I commented that bulls are happy to be bulls and no amount of gender self identity was going to get a bull to give milk. Some of these …”special people” tell me I’m wrong and that I don’t understand that the bull can be a cow if she wants. … yep. I’ve really heard this more than once. If you guessed this was from Portland Oregon city people you would be correct. Most aren’t that indoctrinatedly moronic but some are. It reminds of of Russia in the 1920 or 1940s I think, planing random seeds in thousands of miles of fields while having loudspeakers praising the random kinds of seeds, exerting them grow into healthy stocks of corn. Yep, they thought they could talk the random seeds into becoming corn. It’s about as realistic as expecting milk from a bull.

I love Hoof GP but why oh why does he always choose music that sounds like it is better suited to Love Island or Love is Blind or whatever Netflix show. Drippy - or is it me getting old:))

Graeme, why don't you wear a particulate mask to protect your lungs from damage when you are grinding? I have chronic lung problems and just wondered.

Love you, love this channel and I love animals - and, I REALLY enjoy the music you share. I'm married to a Scotsman from the US so someday hope to come visit your homeland. Thank you for the wonderful content - I, like so many others, am truly addicted to the HoofGP!!

There are other hoof trimmers that make videos. I tried. I cannot watch them. I made sure the notifications for them are shut off. Is it the fellow Scot thing? Only some. It's mostly the upbeat chatter, explanations, and great camera work.

I've been following your channel long enough that I remember when you first started to use eye protection. I think about 3 years ago now. It has been amazing to watch your channel grow and develop. Your top notch videos still have me wanting more every time.

And while I have your attention...as I see the power in your hands and forearms to shave those hoofs, as an old guy now, I wince knowing that a couple decades down the road, your poor hands and wrists will play hell. Trust me...

I know this may sound wierd and all, but could you please put a music playlist, that you use for videos, out for us Americans that would also like to find and listen to. I'm sorry it doesn't have anything to do with hooves, but the tunes are great.

I don’t know if you’ve done it already or not, Graeme, but if you haven’t, I’m sure a lot of people would like a playlist of the songs you use in all your videos someday!

I saw him walk in on Craig's channel yesterday. I knew he wasn't a "happy chappie", but couldn't figure out which foot. Thank you very much for showing us that he is now much better, or will be soon.

Hi GP nice job on the bull Was just wondering does the Appleton weigh the cattle when they are in for treatment and if so what was the biggest weight of animal you have treated There's some serious weight in those bulls Keep up the great videos I'm addicted to them 🍀🍀

Hello Graeme. I love your videos and binge watch the older ones when I can. I never thought I would ever watch hoof trimming. Keep up the good work. Oh if you can can you put the names of the songs in the description too. Many thanks.

New herd member right here. Been watching for a few weeks constantly. We will be visiting Scotland shortly 😀 😊 and I can't wait. Thank you for giving us new knowledge (even those of us who aren't in farming). I didn't realise how ignorant of the dairy and meat industries that I was. Thank you for opening my eyes and teaching me new things.

I live in a city in New Brunswick, Canada, but my parents are from Prince Edward Island where there are a lot of dairy farms. I’ve often visited there and as a result been surrounded by cattle; I had *no* idea that there are different “styles” for hoof trimming!! I am so glad to have stumbled upon this channel and very much appreciate your work and genuine kindness towards each animal.
