Excellent video. I unfortunately have difficulty with small, fragile things. I followed the steps and when finished I have an open circuit between the speaker wire terminals, so I must have broken one of the wires along the way. Either that or I didn't adequately strip off the coating on the wires. I've soldered and resoldered hoping that would burn off any coating preventing a circuit. Any ideas? If this happens to you, what do you do? Finally, do you sell rebuilt mid range speakers like this?
@Edgarbopp

Sorry you’re having trouble. When I read no continuity it’s usually the solder joint. You could also perhaps get a magnifying glass and look closely to see if you’ve broken a wire. However in my experience if the wire breaks it’s fairly obvious because it just falls in half because of how thin the insulation is.

I ended up finding some replacement speakers. One last question, there are two speaker wires to connect to the midrange speaker. One all white, one with a black stripe. Which is positive?

Hi Doug, did you ever run into a problem when unwinding the half loop of the voice coil there was a drop of adhesive or lacquer from the factory that is stopping the unwinding? On one of the tinsel wires i'm only able to unwind a quarter of the revolution; am afraid to pull the wire too hard!
@Edgarbopp
Жыл бұрын
I did not personally run into this issue! I’m not sure what I’d do in your case. I understand your concern about potentially breaking the wire.
@ho-jongwong8998
Жыл бұрын
@@Edgarbopp okay thanks. I might just pull the tinsel wire through the dome at that spot and then run an extra piece of wire to make up for the lost distance in tinsel wire… Will definitely not look original but hopefully it will be functional!

@@Edgarbopp I was able soften that adhesive with a tiny tiny bit of acetone. Was able to finish the repair, works great! I do have another question though. Since you have gone through many midrange dome repairs, have you seen variances in the drivers? Seems like my left midrange is a little more "muffled" than the right one: The right midrange: has 5 small holes in the dome, and when i push the dome, the dome rebounds very quickly. The 5 holes are in a regular pattern so they look they were done in the factory. The left midrange: no holes in the dome, and when i push the dome, the dome rebounds much slower. It almost seems like this dome is more sealed (due to the lack of holes) and has a slower rebound due to a slight vacuum? Any insights would be appreciated!
@Edgarbopp
Жыл бұрын
@@ho-jongwong8998 yes, there are different versions. I too have seen some with the 5 holes and others without. Neither has seemed muffled though. You may want to clean the adjustment rheostats if you haven’t those are often intermittent. You could also pick up a inexpensive measurement mic and run sweeps with REW to see if both speakers have similar output at all frequencies. I’ve also noticed that some EMIT drivers are louder than others so that could lead to a dull sound. Some EMIT drivers need the solder reflowed on the diaphragm
@ho-jongwong8998
Жыл бұрын
@@Edgarbopp Okay i see. I rebuilt all the rheostats and reflowed the solder of all the EMITs as part of my restorations of these Quantums, so I don't think it's those. But will try running REW and see what I find! Thanks!

@@Edgarbopp so I followed your tutorial and rebuilt one of those mid-range speakers. I now have four working mid-range speakers or whatever you called those particular ones from your video. The problem is they all work when connected to the left channel speaker. When connected to the right channel none of them work The emits mid base and woofer all work on the right channel but I cannot get the mids to work The potentiometer that's supposed to control those has been cleaned, all the side of joints are good when I reattached it traced all the wiring back down I don't know if the problem lies within the two rectangular 25 watt sand resistors? If that's what those are that's what I could find on the internet. The wiring for those mid-range speakers passes through two of those That's the only thing I can think of but after research those are not known to fail.

@@Edgarbopp okay, I will have to go pick up a new meter tomorrow as I feel it will take me longer to find my old meter in my garage than it will to repair the speaker. Those two particular speakers pass through two of those resistors , I did find some replacements online that had the same wattage and ohm rating but everything I could find online was a plus or minus 5% versus the plus or minus 10% as marked on the originals is that okay?
