Join me and Cameron as we take-on our first river kayak/camp trip! We take 3 days and 2 nights (May 30-June 1) to head down the Au Sable River in Michigan, starting in Mio and ending at Cooke Dam, covering about 120 miles. During our journey we encounter some breathtaking views, weather, and wildlife.
The river is very pleasant and easy to manage for the most part, almost like lazy-river rafting, just having to keep the vessel straight. The most difficult to paddle areas are definitely the still ponds that we encounter, which lie just prior to the dams, 3 of which we cross/portage.
Here is our original itinerary:
Day 1:
Camp 10 Bridge to Mio- 2 hours
Portage @ Mio Dam- 1/2 hour
Lunch somewhere- 1/2 hour
Mio to Cathedral Pines Campground- about 3 1/2 hours or 6 1/2 hours total
Day 2:
Get on the river by 7:30/8am
Cathedral Pines to Alcona Dam- 5 1/2 hours
Lunch somewhere- 1/2 hour
Portage Alcona Dam- 1/2 hour
Alcona Dam to Campsite 20c- 3 hours or 9 1/2 hours total
Day 3:
Get on the river by 7:30/8
Campsite 20c to Loud Dam- 1/2 hour
Portage Loud Dam- 1/2 hour
Loud Dam to Five Channels Dam- 2 hours
Lunch somewhere- 1/2 hour
Five Channels Dam to Cooke Dam- 6 hours or 9 1/2 hours total
