Paddle board every time for me. I fractured my spine 6 years ago and just can't do the sitting position needed for a kayak anymore. Glad you thought about that in this video.

Another good video. As it's something I'm contemplating, this has been a good comparison. I think I will stick with the paddleboard as mine comes with a kayak seat but eventually the old knees are going to want the comfort of a real boat.

I grew up kayaking and it it's great fun. Especially long distance on a fast flowing water, sometimes with some kit for camping. Can't imagine doing the same on SUP, standing for 8h trying to balance in fast currents. However for splashing with children close to cost a SUP is better.

Great to hear your experience, thanks for sharing. Standing up and paddling is taxing on the body over time. For some of us who have been paddling for a number of years, it becomes natural and easy to stay standing for long periods. SUP is great family fun. Thanks, Beau

Excellent video! I rent kayaks and SUPs in Mexico. I'm transitioning to a fleet of SUPs with inflatable seat options so clients can have both options in one boat. They have a convertible paddle so they can stand up or use them as kayaks. This was a fantastic objective review of the pros and cons of each.

Greta video. Thank you for uploading. The biggest factor to consider which one to purchase for outdoor/travel adventures is also wether you are going to use them more in still water, lakes, or moving waters, rapid rivers. Because you can only think about a river adventure with a kayak, you would not take a SUP to a trip on a river with rapids nir for a long distance. So the geographic location and the type of group activities will mainly determine which one is best for us to buy. Would be nice to have one each:0)

I have sit-on-top kayaks which have the same seating position like an inflatable one and after a while became uncomfortable. Probably a longer tour not good for your spine/back/core muscles. On the SUP you can paddle in multiple position. Standing on it, kneeling, sitting like on a sit-on-top. If you want to relax, you can sit on it, putting your feet in the water or even you can lie down which is very relaxing. You can use it as a sleeping mat on the shore, or even on the water but this last is very dangerous. You can pack on it square shaped bags, boxes, crates. Lighter, smaller.

I have paddled thousands of miles in my Sevylor Colorado inflatable kayaks and have found them stable easy to manoeuvre and safe, last week I tried out the kayak you display and was very disappointed, it is unstable to the point of being dangerous and would not turn easily, it was flat calm and no wind! This was sad as the quality was excellent, it is simply the wrong shape with too finer ends. I use my kayak every day of the year as a yacht tender and collect supplies, driftwood for the fire, drinking water etc in all conditions so feel qualified to comment.

I have both. I keep the sup for calm conditions and usually when I'm out paddling with mates, and the kayak for single trips because it is so much more stable and comfortable, with less chance of ending up in the water. No offense to the kayaker in the video, but you can actually turn that kayak much easier with just two strokes. They looked like a beginner with a bad grip and were struggling. To anyone out there who isn't sure, just consider what you would use it for and get whatever is cheaper, and if you like being on the water, then spend a bit more money and get a nicer inflatable kayak (like sea eagle or aquaglide, which are light, nimble, and sturdy).

My sup has a holder on the side for the oar. I use it to carry the oar I am not using since I take a paddle board oar and a kayak oar. I use the kayak oar while sitting on the sup and the paddle board oar while standing. I also have a kayak, but I find I hardly use it. Both are inflatable.

Thank you for a great video. Lots of useful facts and ideas, sensibly presented and with no waffle; really enjoyed watching it. Have just bought a SUP, mainly for the final reasons you gave: just having fun with the kids on board, but I am starting to think I will use it lots more than that. Nicely filmed too; was a great location - could you tell me where? Thanks again, Tim

Thanks for the detailed discussion. I am a beginner thinking of trying water sports. Do you think it's a good idea to buy a budget SUP with seat on and use that as a kayak? I feel I get a better SUP for same price so better performance.

Yes, absolutely. If you think you will use the kayak seat addition, then go for it. Remember to go for a nice wide shape for stability. Thanks, Beau

Great video - plan to buy a Sandbanks kayak in next couple of weeks for summer in Croatia and Corsica with my Border Collie and a few trips in UK too. Not interested in SUP - I am 60 and think the dog will be better in an 'enclosed' area and I also like the idea of doing a coastal overnight trip in Corsica especially if Mrs J allows us too!

We have a BC too and he doesn't seam to mind if he is on a SUP or Kayak. But if you have a dog that wants to swim all of the time a kayak may keep them on board more. But if they do take a swim they will find it hard to climb up and back in. The SUP is a great flat platform for this. But our BC loves to be on the water and not some much in it. So will be happy to sit and watch. Have fun, Thanks Reuben

Most SUP users use them sat down or nealt down. So to these people they're a paddle board & not a SUP. Also many users use a double fin Kayak paddle which is better in most cases.

In the video, the paddle boarder looks more competent than the kayaker. I have not paddled an inflatable kayak before so it may not be possible, but there were no low or high brace turns, no bow rudder adjustments. The paddler did not look like she had the confidence to lean on her paddle. At one stage she had to keep paddling only on one side to keep the boat moving straight. Most kayakers would keep paddling on both sides and adjust their strokes to keep he boat going straight. At the end of the day, though, they are very different beasts.💟

Why don't you wear the ankle leash in moving or tidle waters?
@SUPboardermag
Жыл бұрын
Good comment. If you become entangled in a buoy line, marker pole, debris, etc, the force of the water moving means you cannot reach far enough down your leg to your ankle to undo the leash. Best if you have a quick release waist leash. Hope this helps. Thanks, Beau

@@SUPboardermag Thanks for the reply. I got a SUP last week still not used it think i will wait to get a quick release. I was reading up on all the deaths on SUP's and they either got caught up and couldn't release leash or had no leash, life jacket or ability to swim and fell off. In all instances if they had a life jacket and quick release they would all be alive.

I have a Dama brand kayak similar to the one in this video. It's sporty, and nimble for an inflatable tandem especially, but they can feel tippier. There are a few sup-yaks coming out where it's essentiallyan ISUP with a middle cutout. My friend bought one and it is much more stable than our kayak, as a kayak.
