🎄 10 years after the discovery of the Higgs boson at @CERN, we publish a perfect recipe for the holiday season.
💫 Season's Greetings!
__________
The recipe 👇
Prep time: 18 years
Cook time: 2 years
Cake mold: 27 km tunnel
Ingredients for the accelerator:
392 magnetic quadrupoles
1232 magnetic dipoles
8000 other magnets
16 radio frequency cavities
5 cryogenic islands
Ingredients for the detectors:
8 coils of superconducting magnets (25 m long)
1 huge superconducting solenoid
Ingredients for the particle beams:
300 thousand billion protons
What to do:
First, we take 392 magnetic quadrupoles to focus the particle beams, and then 1232 magnetic dipoles to hold them along the accelerator. At this point we start to knead by adding about 8000 more magnets, to improve the trajectory of the beams.
We then take 16 radio-frequency cavities and finish by adding five cryogenic islands to the mix. We circulate a few hundred tons of liquid helium and leave it to cool down at a temperature close to the absolute zero.
Before adding the particle beams, we let the accelerator rest and prepare the detectors. For CMS, we form an 8-tonne cylindrical coil. For ATLAS, on the other hand, we will need 8 coils of superconducting magnets, each 25 metres long.
Now we can pour the accelerator into the 27 km tunnel and prepare the beams. To make a beam, we take hydrogen and extract some 300 trillion protons organised in approximately 2500 bunches. We add the first beam by gently stirring clockwise and then we proceed with the second beam, stirring in the opposite direction.
Let's continue to accelerate for at least 10 hours.
We put everything in the oven at -271.3°C for at least 2 years, 100 metres underground.
We wait for the cake to reach 5 sigma by analysing it from time to time. All we need are the 170 powerful data centres around the world and a toothpick.
Our homemade Higgs boson is ready!
