Petra and Jürgen, a married couple from Ellhofen, have fulfilled their dream of a unique wooden house in which they would like to spend the rest of their lives and which can help them cope with everyday life even in old age.
Both have contributed their professional experience: Petra is a physiotherapist and knows what problems have to be overcome in old age - so she always had ergonomics in mind. Jürgen is an IT consultant, is familiar with innovative technologies and knows how they can make life easier in old age, including through AI.
The house has three floors with a total of 750 m². Petra and Jürgen live on the top floor on 250 m². On the first floor there are rooms for physiotherapy, and on the second floor there is also a chiropractic practice and the apartment for the couple's future carer. The couple have already planned all of this with a view to old age.
The planning alone took seven years and the construction phase two years. They were able to move in in December 2022.
The timber house was partially subsidized by the German government's KFW program, as it requires only 40 percent of conventional energy. The couple achieved this by combining the timber frame construction with sandwich construction. The inner shell consists of 3-layer pine panels mounted on formaldehyde-free OSB boards. The house has an airtight shell. Correct ventilation is therefore essential.
The correct arrangement of the windows and doors in the home enables automatic cross and longitudinal ventilation. The central windows in the two gables open automatically depending on the measured value to let in fresh air in all areas and improve the indoor climate.
The kitchen was particularly important to Petra. The furniture is made of oak. She planned everything herself. That's why it was difficult to find a company that would implement everything in exactly the same way. But she persisted and finally succeeded. Everything in the kitchen is planned in such a way that she will be able to get around easily if she ever needs to use a walking frame.
An infrared heater ensures that the house is always cozy and warm. They have attached 13 infrared panel nets to the walls and decorated them with suitable fabric posters. There is no risk of fire, as the nets do not get hotter than 40 degrees.
During the day, the infrared nets receive power from the 60 kW photovoltaic system on the roof and at night from the 28 kW molten salt battery. In addition, the shutters, alarm system and other security features are integrated into the smart system to provide all-round protection for the house.
Petra and Jürgen can control all the lights, shutters and other systems, such as the TV, with conventional switches, but also by voice or worldwide with their cell phone. The couple says: “It's a good feeling to go on vacation and know that everything in the house runs automatically and that we can monitor it remotely”.
Throughout the entire construction period, the couple made sure that there were data sheets with technical certificates for all the materials used. They also documented the construction with over 4,000 pictures. There is an “instruction manual” for the house, so to speak.
Petra and Jürgen also reveal how they managed to reduce costs when building their home: “We always waited until Black Friday came around or the price search engine on the internet signaled a price reduction. They saved over 50 percent of the costs in the bathroom alone because they bought the complete unit, which consists of a bath, shower and whirlpool, at the right time.
The couple agree: “You should plan a house well in advance, buy materials in good time and document everything carefully”.
