This is because the pitch ratio 34/21, in just intonation, corresponds to a very dissonant pitch interval. This is essentially the pitch interval corresponding to 17/7, which is a *supraminor tenth* (a supraminor third, raised by an octave), lowered by a perfect fifth. The supraminor third is a very dissonant interval, and it differs from the minor third by (5/4)/(17/14) = (5/2)/(17/7) = 35/34, which is essentially a quartertone.

The problem is that when you transpose the E (fifth harmonic) one octave lower, the ratio between the pitches E and G (third harmonic) isn't what it should be. Instead of 5:3, you get 5:6 because the interval is inverted. I think it would make more sense to keep rising the pitches in order to have the same ratio in rhythm and intervals at all times. Alternatively, you could transpose both pitches at the same time.
@livingpicture
Жыл бұрын
You could also keep the lower pitch the same, and what changes is the ratio, so it's first the 1:1, 1:2, then 1:1.5, followed by 1:1.6666..., and so on. Then you could better hear how the ratio changes
@angelmendez-rivera351
Жыл бұрын
@@livingpicture Agreed. Really, only the higher pitch should change, so that all the pitch intervals can be heard from within a single scale in the polyrhythms.
@robertinventor

Yes you are right - the interval between the notes alternately approximates the golden ratio and its inversion, yes that might be another way to do this video. The last one is 144/1 that's a bit over 7 octaves, not far off the range of a piano. That could be done if you start at a really low pitch and end at a really high pitch. I'll have a go and see what it sounds like, or maybe not go so far up the series.

Can you explain the choices for the intervals? When it was just 1 in the beginning, the root note was a C. Second sequence made sense, having a perfect 5th for 3:2, and keeping the same root note. I thought that the second rhythm would continue to be higher in pitch, but that isn't what happened. Is that because it would have gotten too high?
@robertinventor

Sorry only just spotted this. No they are approximations to the golden ratio 1.61803398875. Done by using the Fibonacci sequence you get the ratios 1/1 2/1 3/2 5/3, 8/5, 13/8, ... which get closer and closer to it and alternately go above it and below it.

@alreadytakenthe3rd It's because the fibonacci sequence as it approximates the golden ratio alternately over estimates and underestimates it. So 1/1 is below it, 2/1 is above it, 3/2 is below it, 5/3 is above it, 8/5 is below it and so on.

@adriennecrista Great :). I should say for anyone else who hasn't tried it, these videos are good to listen to over headphones or over a conventional stereo system with the speaker wide apart so you can hear the stereo effect of the sound following the bounces. If you play them over a laptop speakers you might find the stereo effect is less noticeable.
