One of the 90's JDM legends, beautiful RX-7, and the driver obviously looks after it. That 90's era was really the golden age of drivers cars, most notably Japanese "supercars" of that era, analog and minimal electronic driver assists. Even the sports coupes from the 90's as well. That's why I love driving my BRZ, lightly tuned, with that heavy stage 1 clutch! Simple modern car, that uses basic components ,assembled thoughtfully to provide an engaging and fun experience behind the wheel...even if it's not fast!

Carprime, does the RX-8 unreliability have the same image in Japan? Here in the US, it’s known for being a great car but rumored to have very bad daily reliability. For this reason they are so cheap over here. I always thought this was because of tuners and street racers messing with the car in ways that it was not intended. I always believed the original rotary in this car was actually good and it shows you guys think so too.

I guess unreliability on RX-8 is as same image as overseas, and also RX-7 is. But if properly maintained, the rotary is an excellent engine, and RX-8 is very fast on the track. Until a few months ago, RX-8s were very cheap, but recently the market has started to rise.

RX-8 engines can last a long time with two simple things. Replace OE ignition coils every 30k miles or upgrade to Black Horse Racing coils (to prevent unburnt fuel clogging catalytic converter and overheat engine), and use Clean Oil Feed aka Sohn Adapter to feed premix oil instead of crack case oil into the firing chambers. 2009-11 series II engines and transmissions have so many upgrades they need very little care other than usual rotary specific stuff such as not using synthetic oil made for normal piston cars. But they must use only their own specific high pressure oil filter for the engine.

Yasutaka Gomi is a great presenter, you should invite him more oftenly. He covers exactly what i want to know about the car, such as the pedal feel and placement and also makes many great points 👍.

I have a friend who had an RX8 Zenki, 231 bhp, from 2004 to 2018, and about 120.000 km. It had great chassis, specially compared with all the FWD "GTIs" of 200-2xx bhp, supple with road roughness but at the same time tidy and sporty, great balance. The bad thing for europeans... the fuel consumption... In city and relaxed normal driving, it was a bit *worse* than a Porsche 997 Turbo (3.8TT 480 bhp) of another friend. Verified for real!

Not sure if true but here in the US the rx8 is known for being extremely unreliable, that’s why like I see NOBODY doing rx8 builds but Z’s hondas & brz’s etc. for days & I haven’t personally seen one on the streets in almost a year lol. Idk rx8 just didn’t hit over here……but I wanted a Rx7 FD so bad when I was in high school but never had opportunity

Removing turbo for RX-8 was a fatal flaw. Those cars today would be larger than life.

They wanted a rotary car but with less power and speed so there's no accidents, because they wanted the RX8 to be sold around the world and certified by safety regulations in each of those countrys

The best way to make a rotary fuel efficient and green friendly for the environment was removing the turbo, besides those Siamese exhaust ports do not help with turbos, rx8 are crap with a turbo I would still build one just to mess around in though.

This video makes me think about the Mazda MX3. As with the Celica, the MX3 was virtually absent from Hot Version, even being a small nice and cool looking FWD coupe, a bit on the style of the Honda CRX (which was featured more), and having a peculiar engine configuration of small 1.8 V6 engine. It is true that Mazda had a good number of peculiar sport cars over the years
