I have to say, I own both a couple of ospreys (a large pack and a day pack) as well as a military pack.. The military pack definitely has its merits. For a day hike or for a few days ospreys reduced weight is nice, but the military grade equipment is just about indestructible. In addition molle attachments are a MASSIVE advantage. With my military pack I was able to literally build my perfect pack using molle. I also have an Austrian Gore Tex M65 coat with a Helikon fleece as a liner which, in terms of lastability, absolutely craps on my arcteryx, north face and rab -at a fraction of the cost. On top of all that I dont have to 'baby' my military gear since it doesnt cost me the price of a foreign holiday for a jacket.

I’m not understanding who these packs are intended to serve. They’re too heavy for backpacking - most backpackers rarely carry over 35 or 40 pounds. Backpack hunters do carry heavy loads, but these packs are not sufficient for hunting. That leaves alpinists…but I doubt either one of these packs have enough volume to carry a -20 or -40 degree bag plus other high alpine climbing equipment. As far as claims being made by Osprey - whatever cutting edge technology these packs have that supposedly increases comfort will probably be negated by the fact that they weigh more than twice as much as my Osprey Exos 58.

@@redpillnibbler4423 You're right to a point. Choice is fine and people can buy whatever they want. But the problem is that Osprey is blatantly ripping people off. There are numerous manufacturers producing packs for backpackers by backpackers, created for the real needs encountered on the trail (ULA & Gossamer Gear as two simple examples) with input from their customers. The packs are tough, lighter, cheaper, and have what backpackers are actually looking for. They are genuinely trying to help hikers get the best gear they can. These Osprey packs are not being made in that way at all. Osprey knows there is a market for inexperienced backpackers who will be taken in by unnecessary features and can afford to be duped into buying "the best." They are free to do so, but shame on Osprey for marketing to fantasy instead of using their resources to move people toward gear genuinely born of experience on the trail.

I am so confused. One would assume a manufacturer does their research before making a new product. There are three groups of people buying backpacks. Ultralighters and Bushcrafters are the opposite parts of the spectrum. Then there's the Once-in-a-blue-mooners who don't really care. As long as its cheap, they don't care. They sit in the middle. UL wants low weight. Bushcrafters and Preppers want hardcore materials such as Cordura 600. Of these three groups, UL is willing to pay the most by far, and these two packs are not only heavy... They are more expensive than my custom Atom pack I had to pay import and taxes for. By a LOT. WHO is this supposed to be for?

The only reason these packs, or a lambo, are worth it is if you have so much money that money itself is worthless to you.

@@icebalm Yes I’m being deliberately slightly provocative to make people think but you always get diminishing returns as prices go skyward. There is a Goldilocks zone when it comes to quality and value, the Atmos is probably in that zone which people can still choose so it’s a win/win.These new packs will be made in much smaller numbers to appeal to a certain customer. What constitutes value is in the eye of the beholder,a canvas with a black square painted on it might sell for £1 million and the buyer might feel he’s got good value 😅

If you’re an ultra lighter this is an absolute no go for me! Especially when you have companies like Z-Packs and other cottage gear companies are using the new Ultra fabrics. Like you Luke, hauling 50+ pounds of gear is not an option especially since my base weight is pretty much what these packs weigh. Just my 2 cents.

I spent that much on a Exo Mountain gear pack and it will out last me I think. Even with my hardcore backcountry use of it. Also it has a titanium frame that is more unique than what osprey described theirs being. It's modular and able to carry more weight as it's design is to carry out quartered game. I think osprey is on the right track for pushing the envelope. Good for them as well as you for quickly reviewing suck new and innovative products. I'm excited to hear your feedback.

I have a Osprey Aether anti-gravity. After a couple miles, 30 pounds turned into a really hard carry because of the lack of lumbar support. I experimented and shoved cut-to-shape foam into the back. The next trip I carried the same weight for 11 miles -- no problem.

I recently bought the external aluminum frame Klättermusen Raido 38L roll top backpack. The backpack itself "only" cost around $375 (i got it on a sale for $280), but with the 5 attachable pockets + bottle holder i ordered for it, the total price (not sale price) went up to about $635. This is really expensive compared to other backpacks i have tried, but it is very comfortable, has excellent ventilation, is relatively lightweight, has good quality materials (even metal buckle for the hip belt), perfect size for my needs, really big side pockets, and the option to attach different sized pockets to the outside for increased storage and better organization. Weight is 1,24kg (on my scale), and the recommended max load is 17kg. This is my 8th backpack, and i like it so much i believe this will be the last one i buy for a long time - although i have considered buying the 55 liter version too 👍

I own a few high end packs. Kuiu, Stone Glacier, Mystery Ranch and Kifaru. Any of them will easily carry 65 pounds. To be fair, all will pack more than I want to carry. The external frames make it easy to swap out bags, say from a day pack to a multi-day expedition pack. Kuiu has a carbon fiber frame which is lightweight, strong but a bit narrow, still a excellent ultralight set up. Stone Glacier seems to be the happy medium between comfort, adjustability, weight and packing sub 100 pound loads. Mystery Ranch is average as well as the most budget friendly option that I own. By far my favorite, Kifaru, is a beast. I've hauled just shy of 200 pounds in elk season. My entire kit plus 2 boned out quarters. The duplex frame handled it like a champ which is more than I can say for myself. The fact I live in Canada and have to order my packs from the US, except for Mystery Ranch, puts the price well over $1000 Canadian ($700 US) for a quality pack. As for Osprey honestly I've never owned one. I'm sure they make a fine product but for the price point they've landed in an area of stiff competition. I'm also sure not everyone needs or wants to haul over 65 pounds but if you do, there are many other flexible options out there. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the review Luke, long time fan, first time chiming in.

$700 is crazy talk. I have several osprey packs and I really like their lifetime warranty, but they are HEAVY. Once I went to a Z-packs Arc Zip (1.5 lbs), I despise carrying my 5.5 lb Osprey. We went backpacking last weekend (~24 miles over two nights) and the Osprey was heavy & made my shoulders hurt. It is likely that I will never carry that pack again. Less weight is so much easier on the joints and makes hiking more enjoyable. Imagine dropping a 5lb bag of sugar/flour into your pack. That is the difference in my Zpack and the Osprey. Thanks for the review Luke!

Back in the 90s I spent big bucks for a heavy DANA Packs Terraplane, which was one of the absolute best backpacks that I have ever carried. With 40 to 60lbs in it, it fit like a glove and was a dream to carry. Other than the price and the weight of the pack, the only drawback was the lack of ventilation (not uncommon for internal frame packs back then), and since it was so comfortable, it was pretty easy to load it up with too much gear. Since then, I've had a number of different backpacks from various companies including Osprey and my retired Terraplane is still the most comfortable.

Obviously these were not designed for ultralight backpacking in any way so for the people saying their base weight is at or near the packs weight, Osprey didn't design this for you. However, I was surprised by the price point and the weight. At that price, there's tons of options for innovative materials that could cut down weight. However, I think they were also going for high durability, which I think they've achieved. As someone who's currently in the market for a backpacking hunting / meat hauling pack, I've found that carrying a heavy load comfortably means that packs weight will be heavier than what I'm used to in ultralight backpacking packs. Theres no way to have a heavy comfortable load in a durable pack that matches the weight of a zpacks arc haul or something similar. I see these packs as designed more for expeditionary backpacking rather than 3 season trail backpacking. The demands on gear are very different between those two activities and I could see these packs filling the niche well, though packs a third the price could probably do it almost as well.

THis will be intereting to watch. I have a Fjällräven Kajka 65 Liter backpack, and it's not a light backpack by any means. Similar to this. But it is extremely comfortable to wear and makes a load feel lighter that it actually is. I also bought it because it have a comfier hip belt, and adjustable shoulder width, so I can quickly adapt the pack to suit me if I have just a tshirt on, or have several layers, without the pack irritating my throat. By far the best feature I've come across. Apart from that, it's got all the bells and whistles as usual. If the Osprey doesn't have side adjustable carryuing system, I doubt it will be more comfortable. Anyway, it's way overpriced. It's like silly name tagged version of a normal running shoe, which by the end of the day, is the same shoe. Cheers.

I also feel like the colors are very discernible as status packs. I have a couple of Osprey packs, and I love them, but the new ones may be a bit over the top for me. I still prefer my Gregory packs over my Osprey packs just because of fit, and comfort. Hopefully this does not start an industry trend…. ❤️🤙🏽
