Amazing work. Why are the UK exam boards not pointing D&T teachers to great resources like this. AQA I'm talking to you in particular! You've summed up everything I'm trying to teach my current year 12/13 cohort about the design process in a well presented and clear fashion with great examples & case studies. Amazing work chap, keep adding them!

one thing you didn't consider in the peeler is easiness of cleaning. Narrow concave shapes makes more difficult to cleaning while convex makes it easier.

The method you are describing has been a big topic in the last years, everyone called it "design thinking" and tried to apply it in all kinds of fields. By the way, thank you for sharing your experience, I am a 2nd year design student and sometimes feeling a bit lost with all the possibilities and no real "guidelines" (I study design at an art school), I'm looking forward to seeing more videos! Good channels on product design are rare on KZitem.

I am glad that i found this video. Very much informative. what i liked the most is the way you drew your concepts on paper. I can hardly do it. My dwg skills are pathetic & when i get ideas, i get stuck at this point. I can't draw them down. Can you please suggest how to improve on that skill?
@producttank
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sk, firstly the only way to really improve is lots and lots of practice. But maybe you'll find it easier to quickly make your concepts first in clay or cardboard or any suitable material and then use these as a reference to then draw them. You can also draw your concepts in profile whilst you practice before attempting angled views using perspective. There are lots of drawing apps available that make it easier to draw clean lines and undo mistakes, so you might also find it easier to use a tablet etc, just so you can get your ideas down. Pt

My observation over the years is most new products work no better than the one they're designed to replace; advertisers just develop a clever looking promo to make them appear exciting and interesting. Most people would just use a regular kitchen knife to do those tasks you demonstrated.

Great insight and explanation of design fundamentals. Small triggers strongly affect outcomes. Once the parameters are accepted though, exploratory ideas get 'funnelled' into an outcome. Sometimes this is very necessary, sometimes it stifles wider exploration. On a different note, i liked the "runners" analogy. To be really good at anything becomes increasingly more difficult. Inspiring stuff, thanks for sharing. I've designed and built allsorts of stuff since childhood and each success drives me to better achievement the next time. I'm still running i guess :)

Thanks for your great work and suggestions! Funny, that you picked the potatoe peeler - this is one of the tools, where so many people have problems in kitchen and their preferences about which kind to use. What I didn't understand is, why doesn't a curved blade work? This is what I always wished I could find - the same when I use a razor for body hair. Why don't they exist? THEY would be a great invention! ;-)

Hi thank you for the video but I noticed that using your final design you wast a lot of layers of vegetables when you peel the sides twice. Meaning : between stroke 1 and stroke 2 you peal 3 layers 1, 2 and 3 Then when you peel again you go over side 3 which now become side 1 and peel it again..

Your design for your wooden peeler prototype had the handle partially milled out... you called the more environmentally friendly, presumably because it used less material, and lighter for the user. Firstly, the milled out handle would not be anymore eco-friendly because the handle would have to be milled out and this would only create further waste material. Secondly, the milled out groove would not be comfortable to put pressure on because it is too thin for your finger and pressure is sometimes needed for tougher vegetables. Otherwise, great video.

Such an amazing video! I am studying product design at A level and unfortunately am not taking physics or maths as I think I wouldn't do very well in them but in my GCSE's I got an A in maths and physics, do you think that I can still be a successful product designer without having taken physics or maths at a level? please reply as this would be so helpful
