Another interesting video. My railway took to using drones about 5 years ago for the same purposes explained here. It has massive benefits in that a track inspection can still take place without having to stop trains to do so. We also have a couple of track inspection vehicles that ultrasound the rails to detect any internal defects which are then marked with a dye bomb so that the defective piece can be replaced later. Keep the videos coming. They're very interesting subjects explained simply and accurately which is unusual for the internet.

Railway industry doesn't involve killing enemies believing in one form or another of the many ancient books nor involve bribing officials with a fraction of huge profit margin(just simply not possible in rail industry), so only countries striving for low margins from technology innovation still peruse such lofty goals. None of the NYSE or Nasdaq counters would come within smelling distance of such ebterprise.

The hydrogen fuel cell does seem like a fairly simple and very cost-effective solution to the million dollar question of how to reduce the use of diesel locomotives. It's good they're coming up with alternatives to electrification and realizing that electrification implementation is not very easy especially over long distances.

on long distance high capacity/freight routes overhead lines are a good investment in the long run. Look at the bad decision the UK did after WW2 to get mainline diesels instead of electrification. On the continent of Europe all train operaters electrified most mainlines.

The new eurostar and upgraded freightline from the canal tunnel in the UK to London can take standard UIC freightcars. Thats now also a main corridor.

Hydrogen itself during the combustion process emits heat and water/steam, but most of the Hydrogen production processes nowadays are through SMR (Steam Methane Reforming) in the refinery plant. Which requires huge energy and emits CO2 waste into the atmosphere. Decarbonization is a really complex subject.

Not ANY form. Big planes for example need high energy density fuel to fly, and hydrogen is just that. Big electric planes are impossible because the batteries add weight, which require more batteries to lift off, which add more weight... you get the point.

Hydrogen fuel cells could be an okay interim solution, replacing diesel locomotives while the line is being electrified. But all the rail lines need to be electrified eventually, no? I mean, however much it costs, it's got to be worth it in the long run due to how much more efficient it is to power a train that way, right? and so, it only makes sense to do it asap, since however expensive it is now, it's not going to get any cheaper by waiting. But then, here I am, in the USA, so ...
@karlosbricks2413
3 жыл бұрын
Generally a benefit to cost ratio (BCR) is worked out which basically compares the expected costs against the expected benefits over 60 years, and the level of density of the network in some countries does effectively mean some lines will never be economical to electrify... This is where battery/hydrogen/discontinuous electrification etc starts to make sense. In the US the prevalence of double stacked containers also raises costs of electrifying significantly.
@tzarcoal1018
3 жыл бұрын
Not really.. Electrification is expensive, it does not make sense in all cases. Very long distance tracks and low volume tracks are in many cases not electrified for that reason.
@CountScarlioni
3 жыл бұрын
I think hydrogen or battery operations still have their place on a network, especially on more remote, less travelled routes. Any heavily used routes corridors like commuter belt services would pass the electrification BCR though. There's also a possibility of a hybrid system, with locomotives running on monster batteries, which are recharged periodically by short stretches of electrified cables.

The only problem with fuel cell trains is that you need a lot of power to make it do over 100mph. It brings back the problem with fast steam trains, it was difficult getting steam in and out of the cylinders at 100mph. In the UK many mainlines are still diesel lines.
