This summer, Octavio Ortiz is participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program at Lewis University. The biology student is focusing on an innovative project involving biochar, which is created by burning plant matter and used to enhance soil fertility.
The Plainfield, Illinois student is mentored by Dr. Jerry Kavouras, and they are examining how invasive plant species can be converted into biochar, offering benefits for both agriculture and the local environment.
The SURE project provided Octavio with valuable lab experience, enhancing his independence as a researcher and equipping him with essential tools for future success in his career in Biology after graduation. (lewisu.edu/sure/)
