Looks like we are bringing microplastics with us to Mars! Would like to see a minimal impact competition as well. Bringing Earth problems to Mars isn't going to make Mars our second home for long.

Colonizing Mars is a choice, you only get to stay low impact by keeping all boots on earth. Minimal impact is in direct conflict with human flourishing of martian inhabitants and I dont believe it's good to pit this against crew well-being.

@@skeletonbones6995 You misunderstand. We don't "have" to bring these impacts in when it is a choice and we have time to prepare. I think it's good for us to expand to Mars, but to just repeat our mistakes from Earth is just going to lead to us abandoning failed planets and moving to the next as we deplete all easily accessible resources while poisoning ourselves. That's no way to move into the future. We can take the time to do better now for Mars.

The PLA used is biodegradable....

@@Rxke While PLA is "better" than most plastics in this case, it still creates microplastics and has impacts on the soil. It can also take a long time to "biodegrade" under non ideal parameters, aka Mars. Once it's out there, it's out there. And putting something biodegradable as a major component of a habitat where it will be exposed to moisture, heat, and internal microbes probably isn't the smartest idea. But sure, just use it and see what happens over time. You'll see if I'm right or not.

@@spencerking7550 PLA is not made out of oil. It's poly lactic acid. I m pretty sure you can hardly compare it to oil based micro plastics re: toxicity. Heck it's even used as those sutures that dissolve in your body. Plastics are not automatically bad. It's the way they're currently recklessly used (single use etc.) that is the problem. Pretty safe bet Mars economy will be big on recycling from day one by necessity. Let's hope crass consumerism does not change that later on.
