Or just slap it in neutral at the very least.. You can't tell me he didn't have his hand of the shifter. A motor is easier to rebuild than an entire car. Put your kill switch in a VERY easy place to access, and go through the motion of touching it before every pass. One never knows when things like this will happen.

As someone who used to race my street car on occasion, and who would have been gutted if I'd wrecked; not to mention bankrupt, I can sure sympathize with these guys; each of whom had investments many times larger than I ever did. A wreck is always a possibility the moment you fire your car and can happen to any of us in a split second. As that one guy said, it's part of racing. Still doesn't make it any easier when it happens to you though. Major props to those guys who saved it and a big salute to all who compete. You entertain us all and keep the sport alive.

I'm not a drag-racing dude (I'm an ex-rally-driver [only amateur] from the Group-B era), but I understand the importance of getting away from a crash uninjured. But.. you know what? When I rolled my car or put it into a tree or a ditch or fell off a mountain, I always felt worse when I was back at home, straightening and welding things, if I hadn't taken enough of a battering to show that I'd screwed up. Does that sound odd? I felt guilty. I didn't DESERVE to have got away unscathed. Just like the lovingly-prepared cars of the guys hitting the wall in this video, if mine had given its all to keep me and my co-driver safe I felt I owed it a cracked rib or a badly sprained wrist to show that I appreciated its sacrifice and shared its 'pain'. Maybe I'm just weird...🤔

When your throttle sticks, first, jam on your brakes. Then, after a short time, you will realize this is doing NOTHING. Then, while in total panic move, you should come to the realization that you have to turn it off. Hopefully, you will have the off switch somewhere in your reach. BTW, the overhead switch may not be a good idea during this situation unless you have practiced violently turning it off. The car at 4:35 is also a perfect example of how jamming on the brakes takes away your ability to steer.

My dad almost crashed his drag car through the garage wall into the kitchen after he was checking some stuff in the driveway. He blipped the throttle and it stuck wide open. Luckily he had the thought to just turn it off b/c there was no stopping that thing otherwise. There were two of the blackest streaks you've ever seen going from the driveway into our garage. He did hit the lawnmower a little bit. I can't stress enough, build in an easily accessed kill switch into the driver's compartment. And always check throttle return springs, linkages, and check for potential hangups in the floor pan. I've seen this happen more than once and even had it happen to me in my truck due to a floor mat shifting its position.
