Proper eye contact or any interaction should be altered according to the two people involved. Eye contact is very powerful for some people, and giving them strong assertive eye contact could make them feel uncomfortable. It has little to do with confidence, but more to do with how your brain responds to the eye contact. Even culture can dictate its effect. The Japanese avoid eye contact as a sign of respect. They are sensitive to others and do not wish to be dominating. Western society is socially less sensitive and actually praises the insensitive as strong and successful. I personally will change my demeanour depending on who I'm talking to. If someone is visibly more timid or shy, I am more gentle and sensitive to that. This allows them to feel more comfortable and contribute their value more effectively. I found your eye contact impersonal and unrelaxed. I personally would have a hard time connecting with you. Be easy going. None of these eye contact wars haha.

TheGuitarGod90. agreed, there's no need to hold a strong eye contact with everyone. Not everyone responds to it the same way. But I do agree with his first impression deal. It's a must for some people so they don't get bullied or taken for a weakling.

Hey, I really love this video. I feel that social skills are beautiful and becoming a lost art. We cannot hide behind technology, letting it destroy the simple humanity of social skills & communication. And By the way, I feel the power of your eye contact through the video. It is really cool that you can even feel this through a video. I think that people are also affected by your appearance and personality. I think it helps tremendously that you seem to have a good personality, are handsome, well dressed and well groomed. It all helps the power of the eye contact. Another thing that affects it is odor. This is really good stuff. I love people skills. It's exciting and invigorating to me.

eye contact is a delicate thing, honesty and confidence definetly go together and you can express it with eye contact but the thing is. when someone you don't know approaches to you and starts a conversation, you can't stare at them in that way, its too agressive. specially if you are approaching a shy person, you'll scare the shit out of him/her. some people respond very well to that kind of straight eye contact, but some really interpret it as a thread. for example, the way you explain things in this video is so confident that you look like a dominant person. no one likes that. in my opinion, eye contact is often used to approach someone you like. some person you want to date. ironically, i saw a study that said shame was the most attractive emotion in men when girls were asked. but the second one was "pride". interesting. so if you are a man really let that shame flush your face, its an attractive to many women. i know it because i've experienced it, girls looked at me in a different way after some experiences. once i remember one teacher always did silly mild jokes making fun of me, like any teacher with a sense of humor. the jokes were fine though, they were funny and nothing rude but i felt a lot of shame when i was the center of attention. the jokes became a routine each class and i heard a lot of people saying i looked attractive and cute when i reacted like that. i won't specify what happened because its a long story but all i can say is that it really works. be insecure!, try to avoid eye conctact in a nervous way instead of an apathetic and seroius way and it does wonders. in the case of girls is different, the most attractive emotion rated by men was" happiness" and i can agree on that. if you are a girl and want to talk with someone you like or want to know better, you must have those "occasional smiles" in a conversation. it really makes a big difference.

I pray before I go into a situation where I might mess up or just not have the confidence I need.. such as job interviews, meeting someone new, or having to meet with someone that you know already has a bias against you and you want to make a good impression (like meeting in-laws). Wow. Well, I've done this with a few girls I've met, and afterward I noticed them staring at me a lot of the time when we were around one another while I wasn't looking, and sometimes while I was. I feel that there's something very magnetic about this kind or eye contact. I have noticed that girls [sometimes very attractive ones] have this feeling of ease of staring into my eyes, longer than would normally be socially acceptable really, because of the confidence.Hey, when girls say that the number one attractive thing in a guy is confidence they mean it. And what better way of showing it than with eye contact.

Hi there Jophie. In regards to the way you felt about the eye contact, when recording videos, I try to be very high energy, intense and engaging much more so than I typically am in person. Proper eye contact very much depends on the person you are conversing with. For instance, if we started chatting and I could tell that I was being a little too (or a LOT too!) intense, I should quickly back off and soften everything about my communication style. Its all about reading the other person and tailoring your approach from there. Thanks for the thoughts all the same!

Humanity lives is such an artificial continuous movie. I only play roles to convince others I'm just as brainwashed and enslaved socially as them. I do not reveal my sorrow or anger to most, as I have so little trust in the majority. One day, I can only hope, this constant fake cheerfulness will dissolve and we'll be forced to openly be more honest, transparent, and truly connected. This greedy and politically correct Western economic system makes it rather impossible with strangers at this point.

Actually, with humans (and other primates) holding eye-contact is a sign of dominance. That's why it becomes uncomfortable when people stare at you for -too- long, and very likely the reason why what you're saying is absolutely correct. I envy humans, who can just automatically know all those things, who can look into people's eyes and get info, without even thinking about it. I've had to learn every single little bit of the sub-language, and there is still so much more to learn that just comes natural to you. Even my bodylanguage I need to force under my control, because it WILL convey entirely different things than what I feel if I don't. It's got zero connection to my emotions or brain, it's just random. (And occasionally has tendencies to look like I came out of The Exorsist movie. lol) It's tricky to find the right timing tho, I could never solve that piece of the puzzle. Too much, and the other person gets uncomfortable, too little, and you come off as weak. This video is helpful on that. ^^

I remember one time I was at a store and for some reason decided to look one of the attendants strongly in the eyes, in a very powerful way like I wasn't scared of nothing in this world, and basically was thinking "I can dominate you sexually". I remember she was talking with somebody and I went to ask her something with this look and of course my voice was aligned to it, and she just went "gu-gu ga-ga" looking at me, like she was hypnotyzed and hanging to every word I said. I could tell she was really attracted from that point. Now I just sometimes just feel like doing that, but will make it a point to do it more often.

Well, eye contact isI amazing but depends on the culture or Gender of the other person! If u look handsome and try to make strong eye contact to a lady from middle east.. she may feel uncomfortable and think it is kind of flirting !... however with the same lady.. if u keep a short eye contact she understand that u respect her so much! Strong Eye contact to some people like waiters and so in some "cultures" means that ur open to help them out financially! Some of them r even gays they try there best to show their admire.. which is not comfortable as well! Strong eye contact with close people is showing more love and have positive impact! Eye contact .. short medium and strong all important depends on the situation, gender and culture in my opinion !

If someone makes me feel.uncomfortable I will repeatedly not look at them if I get a weird vibe from them even more reason not to make eye contact with them If I'm pissed I make DIRECT EYE CONTACT WITH THEM. If they are trying to romance me? I lose interest and I won't make eye contact. I get tired of a guy thinking he need to romance.me when I know I'm not what he really wants when I know he is playing me.

Another reason why I don't see the point in eye contact when I have someone tell me. I WANNA SEE YOUR EYES. When I have caught them talking to someone they don't want me talking too their eyes get real shifty. See I don't like bullshit like that. I don't like being played.

Awesome advice. Great video. I do get a ton of information, sometimes, from brief interactions. It's like I have to hold it in my head and think about it later, when I've got time. Quite often, though I'm examining not a visual image of someone's face, but the complex mass of feelings that arose from a brief interchange. Why did I feel that, why did I respond in that way? Why was I uncomfortable after he/she said that? etc

Good deal. And by analyzing ANYTHING, after an interaction, you're gonna be way ahead of 99% of people out there. Cheers!

yes--if u want to intimidate someone --- there is no room for mutual affection to grow, which is the real and lasting cement between 2 guys-also u r erasing sincerity, which, even if its imperfect and painful is mother natures reality that we have to grow from

The thing is, I'm not scared of holding eye contact. It's just that i can't think properly when i look someone in the eye. I will hold it for awhile, look away and think, and then look them in the eye again and say what i have to say

Hi Barron, when I hold long eye contact with someone and it starts to feel awkward,I'll break off eye contact which feels abrupt and even more awkward. This has gotten in the way of me having great conversations with people, just wondering if you have any tips on this? Btw,your other videos regarding tonality have definitely helped my confidence, cheers!

Nice. Yeah you need to learn, through trial and error, what is the right amount of eye contact to use and how long to hold it. Just keep at it and you'll naturally develop a knack for it.

Just concentrate on what you have to say. Stop focusing so much on eye contact. Everything else should flow naturally. I am not good at eye contact either. I am a deep thinker, I usually look up, down or sideways as this helps me reflect on my thoughts. As a matter of fact people love me for my thoughts and philosophy. The most important advice I would suggest for you is to think before you speak. That will make you very powerful and people will take your words more seriously

I have a co-worker that I see very little from time-to-time, and she has like a smile just glued onto her face. She may come across as a very nice woman but at the same time feels so fake. That also really irritates me. So most of the time I try to come off as more cold when I see her, and it happens quite naturally. On the inside it kinda pisses me off because it's so fake, lol.

Insane eye contact really works. It is very effective. It happened to me where I locked eyes with a guy for more than a minute without speaking. His eyes were like pools of water and when he tried to speak it was like he had a huge lump in his throat. We practically blacked out every one around us as if they didn't exist. Well the rest is history. It was a miracle we didn't kiss right then. The electricity was so charged between us that someone could be electrocuted. There is certainly power in the eyes.

Eye contact is good my friends if you know how to hold your eyes. Now, you have to focus on the topic not on the eye contact. You have to treat eye contact less so that you will maintain it.

I’d really like you to try this in the islands. Eye contact has some very significant social & cultural nuances. None of this will work in your favour.

The girl looks transfixed like a Doe in headlights, and then she returns a warm smile and you reciprocate. That's the usual response. But when she is transfixed, she's searching searching your eyes.

What makes it even more awkward is that we mirror each other constantly, to a point where it seems unreal, and it makes things super awkward. Unintentional mirroring but it is almost creepy.....lol

What if the person as weird eyes? Like a bulging eye? I clicked on the video thinking you would touch on that subject because there have been several occasions I try to maintain confident eye contact but I'm not sure which eye I should look at, or if I should rotate between eyes or what. Thanks in advance for a response!

In that case, I try to look at the persons "invisible eye," which is a spot right above their nose and between their eyes. This gives the impression of solid eye contact from the other person if your struggling to do so.

Great video, and by the way, there is an evolutionary reason why prolonged eye contact shows transparency. The whites in our eyes evolved because we humans can see more easily where each of us are looking. If one human is looking at prey, another human can see his/her eyes and look too, increasing survival rate. This is highly simplified but true, this is also why gorillas don't have whites in their eyes, they never became as socially adept as humans.

well i see it this way, if you hold eye contact doesnt make u honest, but people who talks at you without looking at your eyes, those are dehonest do i explain myself, when a kid is lying he goes and hides his face, he doesnt want to look, whenever someone have done someting bad to you they just dont want to look at you, and even they dont want you to be looking at them!

Hi, Barron, thanks so much for your fantastic videos - they help a lot!! This may seem a silly question, but I think it's something that comes up all the time and always stresses me out. Let's say you try good eye contact with a new person you meet (and let's say you even follow to the letter what you say in your video here). But my question is: what if the other person gave you a very quick glance even before you look at them, decides they just "don"t like you", and then they don't look at you anymore. You now want to establish eye contact with them, but you now realize that this person is not giving you a chance: this person does not even look at you. And so, you get the sense that any efforts to establish eye contact (or to even apply the techniques of your video) is not reciprocated by the other person. What would you recommend? Thanks a lot!

I know this comment is old and you don’t have any replies so I thought I’d try. What I would do personally is just try to engage in conversation with that person and whenever they look at you then practice this eye contact thing. Maybe they are struggling with eye contact?

Thanks for the video. So my question is when i worked at target overnight. I would be walking down the main hallway or whatever the word is that goes across the whole store. Then my boss or anyone would start walking towards me from the other end of it and since it was such a slow approach it got really awkward knowing where to look. Any suggestions
