Really interesting stuff, thanks so much for the insight into the fashion! I've heard it said that the most unrealistic part of the Malifaux lore is the China and Japan are united under one kingdom, but if we accept that this was possible in an alternate history, I wonder if it would make sense for some of the fashion to cross borders, and explain why Misaki would wear Chinese clothes. At the same time, we know that the people from those cultures still have a certain amount of pride and identify with their original nationality, perhaps more so than their Three Kingdoms identity, so maybe Wyrd just made a mistake :) I'm super looking forward to learning more about the Vietnamese element of the Three Kingdoms. We should be getting a lot more of all of this with the new TOS book coming.

There has definitely been growth in Wyrd's representation of various cultures in their Malifaux world. Some of the cringe remains (like Kirai's name and initial backstory), but I feel like they are doing better and they've removed some cringe (like changing the anime-katana fetish punk zombies and removing misaki's boob window on later sculpts). There can still be more growth, but that's true for everything and everyone.

Thanks Dice! Could be that Wyrd big brain play Misaki in Chinese dress because of the melting pot in the lore 😂. I didn’t know that. Appreciate!

Is Kirai’s name cringe? Just means Hate. A lot of games, like Guild Ball, name characters things like “Corsair” and “Shark” and “Sakana,” so it’s like pretty fair. Maybe we can argue that we don’t have that naming scheme in Malifaux except for Crossroads Seven, and that’s why it’s cringe. Or are you talking about something else?
@TerryTerryBouzu
Жыл бұрын
@@CornerCase I think her name is cringe because it's not presented as some sort of "superhero/villain" name but is presented as her actual given name. No sane parent would give their child that name and no reasonable adult would keep that name (and she was reasonable prior to her origin story). If Wyrd were to retcon it to have Kirai taking on that name (and probably dropping her unnecessary surname, that feels like a silly Google translate choice*) in response to what happened to her, then sure, Kirai by itself could be a cheesy villain name. Most other Japanese characters in Malifaux have names that sound like they could exist in Japan. *per at least one website there are only 323 people in Japan with this surname.

Hey want to toss in that Cry From a Broken Heart is a the name of a 1800s Vietnamese poem (also known as the Tale of Kieu). Also Narrow Road to the Deep North is a collection of travel narratives and poems from the master of the haiku, Matsuo Basho. I really hope that we get a new reference to classical Asian literature on a most of the cards. That would be very fun.

@@CornerCase Throwing in again, in case you wan to do a follow up on Thanh Giong, who I love as a pick, That model is very clearly based on the Thanh Giong monument in Hanoi. The pose, the vibe and a lot of details on the horse are spot on. I was also excited to see that this was a Vietnamese story. I know a lot of people saw blurry photos of the model from Gencon and assumed we were getting Lu Bu. This is way more interesting IMHO. I would maybe have preferred Lady Trieu but I get why they might not want to do a model for a character who is heavily associated with an elephant. In any case, whoo Vietnamese rep.

Linh Ly's bonus action allows her to interact with things that others cannot at range. Eg: she can push a strat marker in "Carve a path" which normally requires models to be within 1".

Great video Dek! Was excited to see you get a shot at the preview content, but even more so that you got to discuss the Red Library Keyword. I'm really looking forward to putting this crew to table and they look like a lot of fun. I really do appreciate your due diligence regarding proper name pronunciation - something I am always worried about messing up myself. And I really enjoyed the history lesson at the end! Great stuff! Regarding Linh Ly's bonus action there are a lot of uses here, and taking the Interact action as a bonus action is great efficiency. I think the intent to to ensure she can always have at least one scheme marker nearby for damage reduction - Keeper of the Red Library - and to dish out distracted - Booklight Glow. I can also see her being very effective at certain Schemes and Strategies with this. As an example, Set the Trap seems like a perfect Scheme for her, where she could potentially score solo with a single bonus action under the right circumstances.

Looks like her ability to defend herself is based on scheme markers, her totem drops one and her bonus action drops another. She can also have models gain slow to interact in a pinch to drop more nearby. Map Map can further take a point of damage to reduce damage taken by 1. So in ideal circumstances a min 3 would do 0 damage to her. Makes having 10 hp go a long way if she’s got the support she needs. Seems like an interesting defence setup. Cool to see you getting a spoiler to share. Particularly one with a representation that matters to you. Also good to see variety of characters. A great thing about representation from outside my culture is seeing new takes on things.

Haha thanks Beardhammer! I don’t think accuracy is super important, but it’s more about respecting or celebrating the culture with informed design choices. I have a few friends who are really into history, and want to see more historical reference in some wargames. It’s not a cut and dry kinda thing. It’s still art afterall, and at the end of the day, any positive representation is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

So a cool thing that Linh Ly's bonus action can do is get around exclusive interview auras, other thing is it makes easy passes for cursed objects making her a bad choice to put it on even when assassinate is in the pool. Thinking about it her whole crew is good at crew is pretty good at cursed objects with don't mind me and other abilities that make her good in close quarters and at passing off curses.

Silent Protector upgrade on Map Map (sorry for the no special characters) seems really solid. With Df & Wp 3 but a 2x(--) the Jade Rabbit seems, a priority target that could die easily or drain an opponents resources, really, really needs to be protected, one model may kill it, but multiple attacks will erase it.

Thanks for correcting me on Yedza! 🙂 I haven’t done research yet on the inspirations. I was considering talking about the Vietnamese city of Hanoi, though. It is Vietnams fine arts capital, and it has a great literary culture-even having a Temple of Literature, which I think is a confucious thing.
