I work in the Class 8 industry as a fleet technician. For reference, the 2019-2023 Freightliner Cascadias that I work on have 425hp and 1150 ft. lbs. torque from a 15L DD15 engine. The 2019-2022 Kenworth T680s I also work on have 420hp and 1200 ft. lbs. torque from a 15L ISX engine. These class 8 trucks are full blown semi trucks with a GVWR of 80,000lbs. The fact that Ford has a pickup truck that has similar power ratings from a 6.7L engine is incredible. Granted, the Class 8 trucks I work on usually have the "base" power ratings for fuel efficiency while the Ford Powerstroke HO is probably being pushed to its limits, however, its an incredible achievement none the less.

Those torque number sound low. The MP7 puts out 1700 and the MP8 even more. If you are right, no wonder Volvo and Mack are killing it. Those weaklings can’t pull 20 tons.
@cesarpalmos8235
Жыл бұрын
@@vidsbfree4me You do not have the base power option. The MP7 and MP8 have an optional 1000-1200 ft. lbs power rating, especially if the truck is only equipped with a single drive axle. Most owner ops will not have this option, both the Detroit and Cummins can be optioned up to 2200 ft. lbs. and 625hp. It is mainly fleet purchases where the drivers literally snap axles and driveshafts because they don't know how to drive. I assume you actually care for equipment and it is in far better shape than the fleet trucks I work on. That said the Maxforce engines are incredibly strong, however, I personally would not own either Volvo or Mack trucks. To each their own. Best of wishes out there regardless.

When I traded my 2019 F350 for the 2020 F350 the capacity didn't change(30k GCWR) but the extra 125lbft 200rpm sooner makes a lot of difference, more so because the 10spd. The 2019's 450hp@2800rpm is only 844lbft, where as the 475hp@2600rpm is 959lbft. That's a big difference with the extra gears, it keeps the engine in the 1400-2400rpm range well, the engine makes over 1000lbft over that 1000rpm range. This new engine rating will be amazing as long as the torque curve maintains a similar shape. The Ram/Cummins peaks at 1800(1075lbft) and drops quickly over 2100(420hp@2800rpm is only 787lbft)

My problem has been stopping my 24,000 pound DRV FullHouse. I finally sold my F-350 and bought a Ram 5500 with a Hot Shot setup. It stops fantastic and has all the power needed to do the job. I give the Cummins engine brake the edge on engine brakes to. Overall it has accomplished what I was looking for. I just miss my Ford. I love the Super Duty's. It seems we can never keep up! We think we purchased the latest n greatest and here we go again. To those of us who are really experienced at towing/hauling do you really feel confident hauling 35 or 40k behind a 450? You have to be able to STOP your rig not just pull it off the line and down the road you go. The tail can wag the dog real quick if you know what I mean! It seems we're getting ahead of safety, local municipal laws, and most of all common sense. These types of weights really call for minimum 650 to 750 class chassis. I know their not as luxurious as the limited, Laramie, king ranch. Etc. but they have the heavier brakes, suspension, n frame. Can we really now justify $110k or more on a heavy duty dually pickup?? Just saying

Coming from the perspective of an OTR truck driver, my slight concern wouldn't be ascending a hill maxed out, but descending a hill maxed out. I just don't think the exhaust braking is gonna cut it, versus a proper compression brake like a medium duty or class 7 or 8 truck has. I'm surprised Ford and Dodge aren't bumping up the displacement, adding a proper compression brake, and maybe even an AMT transmission. Maybe put something like an L9 Cummins and an Eaton 10 speed AMT in an F750, and I'd have plenty of confidence then. Not to mention for fleets or owner ops, an F750 is easier to work on as well with the clam shell hood design. I'm only interested in a getting a truck like this for hauling a big fifth wheel trailer. The only reason I shy away from medium duty truck is in most cases the interiors of the cabins are a far cry from the luxury you can get in modern light duty trucks.. An class 7 or 8 truck is just overkill for hauling a 28k to 32k fifth wheel. I feel like the class 5 to 6 truck market is a growing opportunity that needs some love.

Жыл бұрын
I've thought about something like a Freightliner or International medium duty. The only problem is they don't come with the luxury options as OEM, you have to pay for the truck, then pay a boutique builder to modify and spruce it up. Which gets costly. The only other thing I can think of is to wait for more hybrid aftermarket systems to become available. Many super/hyper cars are already using some systems like that, where the rear drive axle is powered by the ICE engine, and the front steer axles are powered by electric motors. The advantage to that is it can save on fuel cost when accelerating and climbing hills, eliminate torque loss when shifting gears, and you then have both engine/exhaust braking and regenerative braking for slowing down. All in due time I suppose, the technology is gradually becoming more and more available to different sectors. I'm just mildly annoyed that there's this big push for fully electrified vehicles, and there isn't more demand for hybrid solutions. Hylion is already making hybrid electric axles for tandem drive semi trucks. Now we just need something similar for steer axles on double axle/6 wheel pickups and straight trucks. One of these days I suppose.

Second positive is 19” wheels. All the F350 do not have large enough brakes. As soon as I get my 350 or 3500 I replace the brake rotors and pads and it’s still not enough. If I want to go with bigger brakes I must replace the Calipers also. At least with the F450, it comes standard with bigger wheels and tires and bigger brakes. What I've found so far is the rating starts around 10.6 and goes up the more you drive. I have about 540 miles and 11.1 mpg (using the gauge on the dash). Plenty of power for my purposes. One caution: Be prepared to spend a lot of time (5-10 hours) finding out how to program everything. You do get one paper manual but you also have an electronic manual which you really need to read through and follow the guide so you get the best from the truck. Oh, my truck is the King Ranch without the moon roof. Yea.. not willing to have a mortgage payment for a depreciating item, just can't bring myself to do it. I'll stick with 10 to 15 year old used trucks.

Funny thing is, is that these trucks have skyrocketed in value over the last nearly 3 years....the only people that missed out are the gotta have its who bought off dealer inventory. Just ordered my 3rd and 4th F-450 (two '22's from last year) ....will decide on what to keep and what to flip when the time comes.

All these numbers are impressive but lets talk about the brake and rotor set up, they get upgraded? You know some dipshit will max the gvw of the truck on some rank grade somewhere and have to do a emergency brake application how will that fare ? The big 3 keep jacking the tow numbers but from looking at the various fleet 450/550 series in our fleet the braking components havnt changed in years. Seems interesting that the tq and tow numbers go up but the ability to stop those forces hasnt really changed that much , maybe the exhaust brakes are just that good?

Gas engine. Has enough capability for my needs and I don't have to worry about whether there will be supply chain issues with DEF again.

To be fair most of the torque and Hp on these trucks is more than anyone needs, in regards to towing. Imo towing over 25,000lbs with a class 3 truck, your nor only putting yourself in danger but others on the road. You got to be able to stop it and control it on flat, uphill and downhill.

Man, if you had the HO Diesel pulling... let's say a 27,000 lb trailer, 1,200 ft/lb with the 10 speed tranny, along mostly flat freeway might gets some bonkers fuel economy numbers!

So everyone keeps saying the H.O. is a $1,200 option but if you do the build on a 450PU where the diesel is already included, checking the box for the H.O. adds $12,495! I really hope that's a typo on the Ford site. OK, I just built a 250 and it only added about 1200 but the 450 still adds a total of $12k. Probably an error on their website.

40k behind a pickup is a recipe for disaster. Not enough mass in the tow vehicle to safely control that kind of weight if you ask me. If you're hauling 40k, buy a semi. It will last you many more miles and be much safer while doing it
