When I see a video like this, or any time I step on a plane, I love thinking back on a flight I took over 10 years ago. We were experiencing turbulence close to this and it was absolutely terrifying. Passengers all around me (including me) started to panic. There was screaming, crying, vomiting - all of it. Right before I was truly about to involuntarily wet myself, I glance over and lock eyes with a middle aged guy sitting right across the aisle from me who looked completely calm and collected despite all the people losing their minds around him. I looked at him as if to say “Are you just looking forward to dying or something?” With a cocktail balancing in one hand (not even a drop spilled) the guy reaches across the aisle and pats me on the shoulder and, with a smile, tells me “relax, you’re going to be absolutely fine - I flew planes every day while I was in Vietnam and you’ve just gotta let it take you while you enjoy this expensive roller coaster ride” Obviously the guy was right since I write to you today, and I actually enjoyed bouncing through heavy turbulence for the rest of the flight and pretending to not care!

As an ATP jet captain i can assure you that you should be nowhere near a jet with that attitude and you have never been in severe turbulence….it involves momentarily loss of control of the aircraft. i was on a flight from LA to Cincinnati in the late 80's....Delta, brand new 767, and hit some of the worst turbulence ever. It was right over Nebraska and there were 2 pockets, both lasting about a half hour each time. I never knew a huge jet could be tossed around like a little toy. It was just twisting, dropping, shaking....you could hear the "metallic sound" of metal bending. Dishes came flying out of the galley, everyone was screaming, and yelling. I remember looking back of me and this stewardess was scared S%$#%less...if she was scared, this had to be bad, she does that stuff everyday. People were pleading for the pilot to just land the GD thing...pilot accidentally left his mike open and you could hear him and the ATC screaming numbers at each other...they kept trying to climb higher out of it. Turns out there was a bad tornado outbreak that day in the mid-west and we flew right into it...anyway, finally landed and that flight was supposed to go on to Boston....however, they made everybody get off and the plane was towed away to be checked. I swore id never get on another one and to this day, i havent since.

Flew on Spirit from BOS to MIA a few months back. Had some storms off in the horizon on approach and as we went through the clouds, had a good amount of turbulence. I was at the window and the woman next to me was cursing at any drop we encountered. She asked why it was bad. I said turbulence is basically inconsistent air. I told her to watch, when we went through a cloud, we'd bob amd weave. If its sunny, its smooth. She immediately understood but seemed as if no one ever told her before. The rest of the descent, we were both calm and talking, no matter thr turbulence. Its ashame people are so fearful over what is relatively benign.....

That’s because to me just getting to point be on my own legs after being inside a giant metal pipe with wings over 30 freaking thousands feet above ground at over 5 freaking hundreds mph is such a miracle that you have to wonder at.

If you ever encounter this, don’t panic. When they design the airframes they do a bend test. They fold the wings up farther than will ever happen in the worst turbulence. It’s actually crazy how far those wings will bend without damage. There are videos of the tests on KZitem. Yes it’s gonna suck and feel scary. Yes women are gonna scream and make it worse and cause panic. But no the aircraft isn’t gonna break or fall out of the sky. Especially a commercial jet in a first world western nation. They are designed to handle far worse.

actually tho, because turbulence only seems hella scary because the giant metal plane is vibrating, therefore the tiny vibrations makes it feel like a giant earthquake to the passengers. but there’s no need to worry because planes don’t fail EVER because of turbulence
@geekytraveler5899
4 жыл бұрын
@@Bassgroover Debateable. Pilots are trying to avoid the turbulence since they know that passengers are freaked out by it, however up to medium turbulence it's no big deal for the safety of the plane itself: it's construction or safety of the flight. Even severe turbulence is dangerous more from perspective of potential falling/flying objects and people in the plane, but still no damage to structural integrity of the plane. So pilots are probably chilling in terms they know there are no danger. But they will try to find more stable air asap, since they know that back behind the cabin doors there are people reacting exactly how you see in this video. People tend to loose their sh*t even at light turbulence (at which sometimes even FA are sometimes continuing their service or just slowly wrapping it). Extreme turbulence is a problem, but still - structural components of plane will be just fine, but control of a plane would be complicated. Though - those areas are visible on radar and GA flights are never getting in there, I don't remember seeing a single report of flights getting into extreme turbulence

As a controller who talks to hundreds of pilots daily - no, no they were not. Severe turbulence in an airliner is pretty rare. Just rare enough that most frequent fliers will never experience it. The reason the captain didn't say anything to the passengers during the worst turbulence is because he or the 1st officer is calling ATC, constantly looking for lower/higher to get out of it. That's not out of fear, but for passenger comfort and obviously safety, as head injuries/broken bones are definitely possible for people who refuse to buckle their lap belts. But even the Captain's voice at the end is pretty shaky, which is even more rare than severe turbulence, showing that the element of surprise and level of severity shown here can rattle even the most experienced airmen, and send most people into an understandable state of fear. Most people, except of course for the legions of KZitem commenters, whose badassery is unwavering, and unrelenting in nature.
