Can insects and mites replace pesticides in agriculture? Does biocontrol deliver on its bold promises? I’m visiting the laboratories of one of the world leaders in the field, Belgium-based Biobest, to take a look at the latest innovations in biocontrol: Bumblebees buzz around in greenhouses to protect strawberries from the Botrytis fungus, and mites patrol tomatoes on the hunt for pests. Researchers at Biobest are convinced that biocontrol measures can be an effective, large-scale solution for reducing the use of chemical pesticides in market gardening, but also in field cropping.
This video was co-produced by INRAE, France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment.
The research and development facilities of Biobest in Belgium are associated with the European Research Alliance “Towards a Chemical Pesticide-free Agriculture”.
How can living things, such as insects, mites and fungi, effectively replace plant protection products? Is biocontrol a viable alternative to pesticides? And for which crops are its various solutions best suited?
This is the fourth stop on my “Field Trip”, my study tour of agricultural research across Europe.
The European Research Alliance “Towards a Chemical Pesticide-free Agriculture” was launched by INRAE, together with its German partners from the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and the German Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants (JKI). Under ERA’s umbrella, 34 research organisations from 20 European countries are currently working closely together with a view to pooling their strengths and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. One of the central aims of the alliance is to provide scientific support for an ambitious objective set by the European Commission: cutting Europe’s use of pesticides in half by 2030.

The impact of my travels:
I’m always aiming to limit my carbon footprint. For this video, the impact created by my train travels (source: Ademe/monimpacttransport.fr) was 1.80 kg CO2e for an itinerary of 736 km, which is 67.20 kg CO2e less than if I’d chosen to travel by plane.
