This is EXACTLY what I needed to see. I was told by somebody that I should ONLY have EQ's on my inserts and should bus out all of the rest of my effects. Thank you for creating this video!!!

Seems there is a theme here. I ask myself, how can I watch thirteen videos and not gain clarity on a particular subject and then watch and listen to one such as this that so simply makes total sense. And having gained understanding, why is it so hard for folks to explain something so simple. Some are going to make fun and say " maybe if you weren't an idiot.....". Well, to that I say, I'm not an idiot! I'm just a little slow. LOL! But seriously. I just learned this sh#@ and I could explain it better than those 13 other guys I have watched in two days. Moral of the rant is _ Thank you. You have my thumb up and may seem out channel the next time I'm a little slow.

One thing worth pointing out that I have run into and struggled with, aux sends are typically mono, while returns are stereo. This is usually not a problem unless I have a stereo synth channel which has some kind of stereo effect - tremolo, panning, ping pong delay - that is built into the synth. Once the channel is sent to the aux bus it gets summed to mono, thus losing all of the cool stereo field movement. In the DAW this is not a problem, digital is not prone to these limitations. If anyone has suggestions to get around this in the analog mixing world...

Okay wait a minute. Why not putting a mono-compressor on the aux? From there you could apply the compression e. g. on a stereo-signal coming out of your interface. the main-out of your mixer is stereo, so now you made a mono-compressor doing stereo-compression, or would that be dual-mono then? anyway, I still did not try it, but if this is basically possible you would only need single mono-units in order to process a signal mono or stereo however you need it, right?

Why does nobody say that you can also use a stereo plug all the way in as a direct out that is much more stable than a mono jack going half way?? The tip and ring are shorted. This way the jack has less probable movement and a better connection.
@KutAnimus

So if you have a pre-fader Aux send, you can send entire signal to an effects unit and leave out the original signal. That would be essentially the same as an insert right?

Great explaining there, thanks! My question is, is there a reason why you wouldn’t want to run a compressor as an auxiliary, for use on multiple tracks, like drums? I’d like to compress two different drum machines, but my mixer only has inserts on tracks 1 and 2. My Akai I run stereo on a stereo track 11/12…and my Arturia Drumbrute to a mono track.

OK, this is actually good info. The insert actually interrupts the signal while aux copies it. The manuals and only articles so often say "like a compressor" that it all blurred together and I now have 1 Y-cable / insert cable too few (though with the extra cables I guess I can just use one of the spare channels until I stumble upon another insert)
@MultiAli62

Kudos to you. You explain these topics so well. I learned a lot. One question: on some mixers like the Audient ASP 4816, they have certain inputs and outputs for DAW. How do you connect them to the patchbay? For example, you want to connect your guitar to a preamp then to your analogue mixer and in the end to your DAW. Best regards, Ali

Hi tuneroneff, thats a great question.As oppose to AUX busses, Inserts are usually always PRE-fader. A good way to remember that is you don't want your fader position to influence the amount of signal sent to a gate or compressor that you have inserted. (as you would have to adjust the processors settings again. ) Larger consoles can even offer some options to change the order of the EQ - DYN and the INS. This seems pretty 'do-able' in a digital mixer, but as you can imagine these options require a lot of internal cabling on analogue consoles therefor smaller mixers won't offer these options.

4 years later and this is still a well produced video. Great job thinking through the storyboard and concept illustration. You've made the world a better place. I'm finally grasping a better understanding of these parts of the analog boards I used for so many years, but no one would buy external boxes where I could learn it intuitively. Now, they're like candy on most pro mixing consoles and DAWs have so much horsepower at their fingertips, it still feels like candy too. Thanks for shining a light on the *why* side of inserts.
