Thank you to Nicola and the talented team at Adel Rootstein Display Mannequins and to filmmaker Tali Clarke.
In Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan, Britain has lost the Falklands war, Margaret Thatcher battles Tony Benn for power and Alan Turing achieves a breakthrough in artificial intelligence.
Charlie, drifting through life and dodging full-time employment, is in love with Miranda, a bright student who lives with a terrible secret. When Charlie comes into money, he buys Adam, one of the first batch of synthetic humans.
In a world not quite like this one, Machines Like Me is the story of a robot in love. It asks the question: could a machine understand the human heart?
How to design a cover that would feature a near human? Working closely with the team at Adel Rootstein Display Mannequins, VINTAGE creative director Suzanne Dean trawled through their headquarters in Fulham, London in search of the perfect Adam and Eve. Rootstein had revolutionised mannequins in the in the 1960s by modelling their mannequins on real people. As a consequence they are incredibly life-like.
Once Suzanne and her team had selected the mannequins, we invited Ian McEwan to help direct the final stages of bringing his vision to life.
