Always amazed at the engineering on these old games! I'm sure it's simple compared to current technology, but it's still pretty neat.

Whenever I consider working on something that is mostly mechanical, I envision the scene from the 1951 Alice in Wonderland film - where the Mad Hatter attempts to fix the White Rabbit's watch. He grabs a fork and just starts flinging wheels and springs everywhere. Glad you left out the jam. Nice tune-up.

I got one with its original box on eBay earlier this year. It was included in a bundle with another game I was after and the listing said it was non working. I opened it up at the time and fiddled around with it, but didn't get anywhere. Yesterday, it started nagging me to mess with it again, so this morning, I opened it back up, played around with a couple of things and got it fully working! I really like the earlier handheld games. I remember getting Blip when it first came out. I was in 6th grade and it as one of the coolest things ever. It started my love affair with this stuff. A lot of the earlier handhelds are more fun to play IMO than the slew of LCD games that came out in the 90's.

I was expecting something solid state with bleeps and bloops, but this is so much cooler. It's rather ingenious actually.
@ModernClassic

Yeah, the NTEX Electronic Baseball that I mentioned in the Sears catalog is all solid state, and that basically replaced this. I love these mechanical designs, though. This thing's got 2 LED's and that's the extent of its "electronics". Everything else is mechanical.

Got one and took it apart. The lights for the streak effect and the results spinner are tiny incandescents! Only 1 LED, the ball.

I remember buying this game back in the day and being super disappointed by it. I liked digital derby and Blip and wasn’t expecting a fully electronics experience but it sure left me sad that I bought it, especially after playing Mattel Baseball that same year. :) To me it simply was not a fun game, even though i thought Blip and Digital Derby were. :)

I forgot all about this one... I had the _"Digital Derby"_ racing one, and the older "Pong" like unit they made the year before called _"Blip"_ ... I think they also had one similar to the iconic Mattel football handheld of the time...😂

Yes! I had the "Digital Derby" car racing game pictured in the catalog - along with the Mattel Electronics all-digital soccer and football games (still have both of those, plus a modern-reproduction Mattel Electronics baseball,) which got broken and tossed long long ago.

My cousin had one of those, and I played it a few times. I don't think I've ever seen it powered. (5:07) I think you forgot to clear the Ball slider for the next batter. (9:15) My usual method with car mirrors and vents, is to use the adhesive from electrical friction tape to gum up something that I still want to move, but has too much slop.
