Welcome to my latest Philippines travel vlog! In this video, I take you on a journey to the slums of Manila in the Philippines, where I delve into the complex history and present-day realities of two of the city's most well-known slum areas: Smokey Mountain and Happy Land.
Smokey Mountain was once a thriving community of informal settlers who made a living by scavenging and selling recyclable materials. However, government efforts to clear the area in the 1990s resulted in the displacement of many residents and the creation of a landfill site. Despite these challenges, the Smokey Mountain community has managed to rebuild and survive, and it remains a vibrant and resilient place to this day.
Happy Land, established in the 1970s as a housing project for informal settlers, has faced its own set of challenges including overcrowding and substandard living conditions due to poor planning and lack of government support.
In this Philippines travel vlog, I take a walk through these neighbourhoods and talk to locals about their lives and struggles. I also visit some of the houses and see firsthand the challenges that families face on a daily basis. Despite these challenges, the people of Smokey Mountain and Happy Land are resilient and resourceful, and they have created a sense of community and belonging in the midst of poverty and adversity.
Join me on this unique and eye-opening journey through the slums of Manila and get a glimpse into the lives of the people living in these areas. There is so much to see and do in this beautiful country, and I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you. Thanks for watching!

WHO AM I? My name is Shota and I'm a traveler and van conversion enthusiast. When I was 19, I left Japan and spent nine years exploring different countries and immersing myself in diverse cultures. In the past three years, I've been sharing my adventures in Japan through my KZitem channel, showcasing the lesser-known sides of the country and vanlife travel experience. When I'm not busy converting vans and ex-Japanese police buses into campervans, I'm back on the road, traveling the world and sharing my journey with others. My ultimate goal is to inspire others to embrace the diversity and vastness of the world around them.
