I spend a day at a riverside slum (known as “bordos”) in Rivera Hernandez-considered the most dangerous neighborhood in Honduras, during the 2010s. The bordo communities of San Pedro Sula are often stigmatized as violent, hopeless neighborhoods. Many, in fear of my safety, warned me not to go. After hearing their warnings, I began to wonder if it was a bad idea to go.
But I wanted to document the hopes, challenges, and efforts of its families, and learn about an organization there that is fighting against all of the odds. By visiting, would I be able to show the world that these communities have more to offer than the generalizations and stereotypes placed upon them by social and mass media? Let’s find out together.
A special thanks to pastor Jervis Erazo, the President of Operación Amor, a Christian organization in San Pedro Sula, for coordinating the visit. I hope you enjoy episode 2 of 2 of Rivera Hernandez.
