You would walk along City Road in the daylight and people would openly offer to sell you Crack. I can remember at one point, the Yardie problem got that bad, the police were patrolling the streets with 9mm sub-machine guns. I even remember driving home one night past an incident where police were running around looking shocked and startled. The next day I found out that it was because a Yardie was shooting at the police.

Bristol St Pauls is very much like Liverpool's Toxteth. Both were ports and drew in a lot of foreign labour who settled in the poor run down areas of the inner city. Additional migration during the 50's and 60's of Afro Caribbean's who gravitated to those areas created ghettoes of poverty. Those areas though in Victorian and Edwardian times, were affluent places and contained good quality housing which it no longer is. Unfortunately since the early 21st century, many of the issues associated with these relatively small pockets have spread out across a wider area and the contrast between St Pauls and some of the nearby suburbs isn't as wide as it was back in the 80's.

I have spent plenty of time in St Pauls for lots of social and work reasons and regularly pass through, it is not quite how you portray it in this video. Firstly you have focussed the footage of graffitti and litter which of course is a problem but it gives the impression that it is absolutely everywhere in the area, it isn't. You didn't show hardly any shots of the grand houses that line City Road and the beautiful, listed portland square and brunswick squares with their respective portland church and civic building, the kids play park in St Agnes, St Agnes Church and various parks in the area. You didn't show the colourful rows of houses which people peacefully live in, where generations have lived and enjoyed. St Pauls has its problems but many of the crime stats are caused by people coming from outside into the area linking up with a minority of people. Compared to other areas in this city such as Hartcliffe, Knowle West and Southmead, St Pauls ( and Easton) are have far more cultural and community groups, businesses, events, festivals and general good community vibes. The other places are a hell of a lot more narrow in their offering and suffer from feral gangs of youths, something not found to the same extent in St Pauls. St Pauls also unlike those areas, has a much bigger proportion of students and working professionals and upwardly mobile workers, it is far more diverse and rich in life than the aforementioned other areas, hence the growing gentrification and redevelopment. St Pauls carnival is the longest running Carribeean and African carnival in the Uk at i think 53 years old now, I have been tomany and the last two were absolutely fantastic, attended as always by children, families and all generations, it is unique, incredibly fun and colourful - the floats on the procession contain around 14 primary school floats, it is a family affair and these days closes around 10pm, 60 - 100,000 people having a good time with relatively very little crime. Check out the reviews and videos from local newspapers for pictures and videos Bristol247 and Bristollive.

I was in St Paul's last night as there was 5 different sound systems playing Dub, Drum and Bass, and even a bit of the bouncy Hardtek that the kids seem so fond of. There were hundreds of people at every stage, some of which were in peoples garden, and it was going off! Loads of youngsters, and loads of encouraging words coming from the MC's, who, as far as I can tell, were only preaching love. I got told it was the St Paul's carnival, which hasn't been allowed since that flue went round ages ago. I think it was still a bit subdued compared to it's usual state of glory and celebration, but may well be an important pulse lest the state of gloom gets its way and snuffs all the fun out. I've been round St Paul's here and there for the last 6 or 7 years, and yeah, it's a bit sketchy and a bit grimy, but there's a community there. And a lot of youngsters got some wisdom to draw on from their elders, if they choose to. I can only speak for myself, but so far I've never had a bother there. At any time of day (even 5 am when everyone is clearly still in bed and which may well be the best time to do graffiti on a dumped mattress).

@@rachel.mcgowan because the video creator has focussed on these bits of rubbish and graffitti to give a disproportionate perspective. As I have commented at the top, he has missed out loads of other things such as the grand houses on city road, the georgian portland and brunswick squares and houses, the parks, bars, cafes, restaurants, churches, community centres, schools and all the community groups and events not to forget the huge st pauls carnival which is an incredible family event and attended by 100k! There is a brand new hotel in Portland square - the 'artist residence' and there is a brewery/taproom 'new bristol brewery' there, you don't get places like that in completely deprived shitholes, St Pauls has its problems but it not a vacuous completely deprived council estate like elsewhere.

Southmead is one of the most quiet cancil estates in bristol St Paul's is one of the worst in the country for drug dealing and probably knife crime and it doesn't matter if loads of students live there that won't make the criminals and gang members leave

Im suggesting what you saying its just loads of bollocks, im an Italian living around Easton and st pauls for 5 years now and Bristol is indeed a safe and vibrant city where to live. The real problem is just how posh and unaffordable is getting cos all of the riches moving down from London.

You're being played by racists, mate. Maybe think a bit more critically about this info you're getting. Some of the video you labelled as St Paul's is Werburgh's which is well gentrified and middle class.

I'm from middle class Cheltenham and having lived in St.Pauls for five years from 2015 to 2020 this video is over dramatic and misrepresenting the area. If you get to know the locals there is always someone looking out for you, you just gotta talk to people. Cheltenham high street on a Saturday night is a far more edgy place to hang out, with small town chav syndrome and an entitled twat mixup. St.Paul's changed massively in the early 2000s when they cameraed the whole area up, it's not like it used to be at all.

I nearly bought a flat in the area about 35 years ago (three years after the riots which made national news). Yes it would have made life interesting. On the other hand, it would have been superb for my first two jobs (one of which was within a quarter mile) and I would probably have made it to a lot more theatrical events. St Pauls puts me in mind of Soho a few decades ago. It's rough, but there's some real community spirit in some areas at least. Stokes Croft, on the edge of the area, is definitely trendy (even including the open fires).
