We are back in the Balkans! Located in Southeast Europe, North Macedonia and its capital of Skopje have roots that go back thousands of years. Various empires, especially the Ottomans, made their stamp here. Today, you’ll find remnants of the past in the Old Town and Old Bazaar, as well as the 15th-century Stone Bridge, which connects to the newer city now known for its inordinate amount of statues. Yes, statues. There’s even a local joke that there are more statues than residents in Skopje.
But we didn’t come here to count statues.
Instead, we spent about a month in Skopje to walk the streets, shop at the bazaar (one of the oldest and largest in the Balkans), search for the best local food, attempt to hike up Mount Vodno, and-of course-learn about the history and current state of Skopje from its locals. (Like, why is it called NORTH Macedonia?)
