It's a Mosler Safe Co. vault door. I used to work for them and had two of these round doors in my area. They were serviced annually and could actually be closed or opened with one finger. Usually, when the bank moves out, the combination is set back to factory. Also, there is an escapement feature to unlock the door from the inside so that if someone got locked inside- they CAN get out.
@Dogleg1957
Жыл бұрын
What's the weight of that door alone? Can't imagine installing this back in the day.
@leskobrandon9865
Жыл бұрын
The door with frame weigh 22 tons! The bank had old black and white (maybe tin-type) photos of the vault door delivery and construction. It came on a huge wooden wagon pulled by about a dozen horses. The vault was extremely small compared to the door. Above the door opening, there was a huge iron eye to which they hooked a come-along. The door was slowly moved onto blocks of ice. As the ice melted, it was hammered into place with sledge hammers until aligned and bolted. Hinges were adjusted, and combinations set. Voila'!
@Dogleg1957

@@leskobrandon9865 I installed ATMs for many years. Occasionally I would run into old vault guys but never heard story like that. I know with the lighter ones of today the door is raised while one man supports it with oak staff...called dead man position, for good reason. Using ice is ingenious!
