They're building a new line but don't electrify it, what the hell? Electric trains can accelerate much faster and their maintenance is much easier and cheaper.

Upfront costs are lower. That's why all true high speed rail projects are partially, if not fully government-funded to mitigate risk to private investors, and they usually join in later in the game.

Infrastructure investment in catenary is much higher, potentially justifiable with high traffic like in NEC. You putting up the bux, bro? Diesel-electric much more flexible, much better investment over HUGE rail networks, for multi-mile-long freights.
@jtkm

in florida however, I think the climate down there would just destroy the catenary overhead. Hurricanes, unstable soil layers, not to mention FEC still operates frequent double stack intermodal trains up and down the corridor and heigth restrictions would probably reduce them to single stack. And to @Sean Jau, I believe only Orlando to Tampa is a designated US high speed rail corridor. Orlando to Miami is not, so federal assistance is not possible. I believe they tried for a loan, but got rejected. Orlando to Tampa however I believe is eligible for federal funding. In addition, Diesel-electric locomotives are pretty efficient up to 125mph speeds. Say, they build the line to Class 8 trackage speed of 160mph, electrification would then be far more sensible.

This line will be a "higher-speed" line. The rolling stock has a top speed of 125 mph but the operating speed will be lower due to infrastructure. For example, from what I've seen, it has quite a few at-grade crossings.

In the eyes of private companies, electrification isn't worth the cost, even if it means faster service and happier customers. Every true HSR project has received some, if not full government assistance.
@ethanlamoureux5306

@Sean Jau Just as every highway and airport project receives government assistance. For our government to abandon railroads while simultaneously giving massive subsidies to highways and airports shows a systematic effort to eliminate our rail system altogether.
